Chris Keane (bad injury)

Post by Boxingcutsman »

Just wanted to publicly say how extremely proud of Chris Keane I am along with the rest of Team Keane & his family. It's a privilege to work with the kid.

He boxed last night in a British Title Eliminator against current southern area champion on the kids home show, unfortunately he lost in a very close, split decision by 1 point in the home kids favour by the 1 judge, a few had Chris winning by a couple, we had Chris up by 3 rds, the 1 judge had Chris up by 4 or 5 rounds, but it was a very cagey close fight, the home kid didn't want to fight and kept his concentration very well and plenty of distance between himself & the danger of Chris right hand. Chris asked me to also publicly congratulate him and wish him well on his behalf.

But the reason why I'm so proud is that Chris Tore his bicep in the 2nd round and didn't want to be pulled out, so come back to the corner and never mentioned it, he went out for the 3rd round and his bicep completely rolled down into his elbow, a absolute horrendous injury, he come back to the corner and it was very clear to see the extent of the injury, but he refused to quit or be pulled out and boxed the remainder of the fight in excruciating pain and in lots of people's opinions still went on and won the fight away from home.

We traveled straight back and Chris has been in Birmingham's QE hospital since, he will see the Trauma & orthopaedic specialist again in the morning and will more than likely be operated on tomorrow if the swelling has settled a bit, we won't know the full extent or limitations for a while or if Chris will ever box again, but I just want to say again how extremely proud of him I am, and it's a honour to work with him.

Also thanks to the many people that have messaged myself on twitter & Chris wishing him well, we will keep everyone informed

Also many thanks to Peter Fury & all his lads in the gym we sparred endless rounds with to prepare & Nathan Cleverly, and Adam Booth, Andy Lee, Mike Perez, we had a amazing camp but just suffered a terrible bit of bad luck at the worst time.

Fair play to the lad for carrying on, but sometimes when you've got an injury the very worst thing you can do is carry on and aggravate it further. It's why footballers pull up straight away when they've done a hamstring or achilles tendon or whatever, certain injuries are just a point blank stop what you are doing and get it treated.

I understand it's boxing and a hard man's sport, but if he does end up having to finish over it then there is an argument to say he should have pulled out (or been pulled out) to save him for another day.

Obvious stuff to say I know, but maybe there should be more medical type people present at boxing, if he'd done that injury in a pro football match there would be a qualified physio there to assess him straight away and evaluate the risks of carrying on with such an injury. Sometimes boxing is a bit unprofessional in this regard.

Fair comment, these lads are fighters in every sense of the word, there made from some amazing stuff and there want & will & need to win is amazing, it's not unusual for boxers to carry on fighting with terrible injuries i.e appalling cuts, broken jaws, broken hands, dislocated shoulders, broken ankle, tore bicep, etc
I think if Chris had of been taking punishment or it was turning into a gruelling/tough fight with a risk of him being hurt then we would of 100% pulled him out no matter what.

I think in his mind he had waited a long time & worked hard for this opportunity to try and move a step closer to fight for a British title that he didn't want it to be taken away from him under any circumstances, that's all he's ever wanted since he's started boxing, like most kids, in between rounds he would get distressed when he thought we would pull him out and that under no circumstances was it to be stopped when we talked about it in the corner with him, he said he wasn't in danger has he felt the kid couldn't hurt him and felt comfortable in the fight other than the pain he was in and that he couldn't throw his right hand, or keep it held up, but thought he could still out point the lad, which amazingly he very almost did, and IMO and many others he did.

The crazy thing is Chris was only caught with about 6-7 jabs, 1 left uppercut & 1 straight left through the whole fight, he came out totally unmarked, but for such a horrendous injury, bad luck ain't the word.

That's a shame. Nothing worse than an injury while competing. I tore my superspenatus ( excuse spelling) and rotator cuff. Took the muscle clean away from the bone and was one of the sorest things ever. I continued on and the pain was really bad can imagine just how brave Chris was and deserves a lot of credit. Sometimes you get pain but don't realise how bad it is while competing. Something inside takes over and stops you from pulling out.. Too the comment about footballers pulling out. They are playing a team sport with substitutions it doesn't really count and can't really compare. I hope the injury isn't too bad and Chris can come back stronger.

Why didn't his cornermen, the referee or the doctor stop the fight? I respect the lad's bravery but I don't respect the people who are supposed to be looking out for him.

Yeh fair play to the lad, it's amazing what the surge of adrenaline can do when you're competing and don't want to stop. That's when others need to step in and assess things for him and a professional medical person/physio could have done that.

I am his cornerman, and has for respecting people like us, we train these kids day in day out, we know what these kids go through and know them better than anyone, the doctor only comes in if he is called for during the fight, and the referee didn't even notice. if Chris was at risk then there is only one decision to be made and nothing to be discussed, he would of been pulled out, the decision was made to not pull him out on numerous factors.

Firstly Chris refused for the fight to be stopped, with his opinion/wishes aired and has a experienced, knowledgable, person in this sport with years of experience I made a judgment on my knowledge of injurys that if the tendon has detached completely from the glenoid then if the fight was stopped or he had of fought the remaining 7/8 rounds, no more damage could be done, if the bicep had just tore a bit then yes pulling him out would of been a option to prevent the tendon totally coming away from the bone, but it was clear to see it had totally ripped away so he could fight on if he wanted which he did and today still sticks by that, at no risk of causing that specific injury any further aggravation or long lasting damage. This was today verified by the specialist who will be operating on Chris, The second deciding factor was that even with 1 hand he was comfortable in the fight and wasn't taking no punishment to cause concern, if he had been taking punishment then again we would of pulled him out, our lads safety is paramount.

To everyone else, thanks again for your msg's & support, Chris will need to wait 2 weeks for the swelling to go down, in the mean time he will have another MRI scan followed by keyhole surgery to put a camera in through his shoulder to see the full extent of the damage and try and find the head of the tendon and muscle to pull back up for re-attachment when they do operate, again we'll keep everyone informed and Chris is very grateful for everyone's well wishes.

Great explanation in the second paragraph, it really is a split second judgement call.
The same happened with Ricky Burns v Beltran, I know Ricky 100% and he was winning that fight with ease until his injury happened, IMO Ricky was always in the fight even allowing for the jaw and he showed great courage to continue for 10 more rounds, if at anytime I thought it was causing him to much of a hindrance I would have stopped the fight
wish Chris well from me mate.

I do a fair bit of running, and have torn my calf muscle. Incredible pain from it when it happens.
No idea how Chris went through those rounds with that injury to his arm, good luck to him in his recovery.

At 27 there's still time for him to mount a course to a british title shot.

Its all BOLLOX ,, The corner man / trainer is there to guide , assist , bla bla and bla bla some more, we all know that ,, What else we all know is these guys are fighters , and some are smart some are dumb , some have more pain thresholds than others , , some are just plain out and out pit bulls, who would rather die than give up, or to them even worse be seEn to give up .

But you know what , THEY AINT THE FACKING BOSS , the trainer / cornerman is , some have to be saved from themselves ,, in this instance his corner shopuld off stopped the fight ,, at the very least , CALL THE DOCTOR and LET HIM DECIDE .

The trainer is'nt a doctor , and , should'nt be making judgements , when its a serious , shocking injury ,, Seen a trainer a few years ago , trying to put a boxers shoulder back in,, in between rounds after it popped out ,, what happenned , he said , in my experience if there put back in there ok ,, What a load of bollocks , HE FACKED UP THAT SHOULDER FOR EVER ,, yes forever that boxer never fought again .

Chris Keane , will now be lucky to carry on , could possibly have to retire with a injury that will affect him for the rest of his life ,, but its all good , his trainer came on here and congratulated him for being brave .

Unfortunatly theres a lot of brave trainers out there , , but pity there not brave enough to say to there fighter , I'm in charge and your not going on with that injury , at the least CALL THE DOCTOR .

The chief cornerman is there for a reason , and one of them reasons is to look after his boxers health .

I know ,, I know ,, people cornerman can say that , the speca list , now says there may not be a long lasting injury ,, BUT on the night there was NO specalist and no x ray , Only a boxing trainer giving a UNQUALLIFIED OPINION .

Sorry to hear this about Chris Keane, he has not had the rub of the green in his career, when he joined Warren, it looked the start of something big, but he was not given fights, so had to do it the hard way on small shows, a quite guy outside the ring and not a big ticket seller, hard to market, hard to match, but in the ring his personality came out with some explosive wins, that got him on the verge of a british title, to be honest he looked like he was going to become top dog over here in his division, then in an eliminator he got caught by a big puncher, when control, it set him back, now this injury, another piece of bad luck, hope he can come back from this.

Well my UNQUALIFIED OPINON turned out to be right and backed up by a very Qualified specialist surgeon who will be operating on Chris, so looks like I may be a little bit knowledgable after all, hey mate ?

Also Chris has been told he will be able to fight again all being well, it will take a good while and lots of Physio so he's happy that he can fight again and try and win the British title which he set out to do when he started boxing

Thanks Naji, yh he's gutted and obviously wonders why he gets all the bad luck, remember this has happened before aswell to his left arm which kept him out for 15 months at beginning of his career, he will be back though mate, he's a really great kid, very polite and very quiet, a great humble lad who gives boxing his all, hopefully all goes well and he starts getting a bit of luck and fulfills his dream because he certainly has all the talent, heart & will to do so

Fair play to the lad, he's clearly a brave man. I suppose if people want to hide injuries and carry on there's not a lot anyone can do about it. Boxing is like this I know, people sacrifice themselves for the sport but we could do with a bit of modernising in some ways just to try and prevent the worst injuries.
