nice quotes from Ruiz - Valuev press conference

Post by knockout »

from fightnews:

Valuev got a good sense of humour

Valuev: John is a nice guy, but I will knock him out. I am very well prepared and there is nothing he can do to surprise me.

Ruiz: We brought 25 suitcases with us to Germany. One is empty, and in it we can put Nicolay after the fight. I'm prepared to go twelve rounds. My motto is early win and go home early.

Valuev: Your suitcase with the world title belt will be empty. Buy yourself a Berlin souvenir. That's all you'll pack in there.

Norman Stone: (Ruiz manager/trainer) Nicolay's size will not help him this time. We have a way to beat him.

Ulli Wegner: (Valuev chief trainer) If Nicolay simply boxes, he will win. Against Larry Donald, he had tried too hard and lost his focus.

Manuel Gabrielian: (Valuev personal trainer) This time we are prepared. Nothing can come between us. Nico will be world champion.

Good guess :TU:

Both fought on the same bill in Bethnal Green, of all places, in 96.

Changed my mind and think the giant will win this on points.

BOXING 'FREAK' GETS TITLE SHOT

By Mark Staniforth, SportingLife Uk

Even the renowned boxing fans of Bethnal Green's York Hall had never seen anything quite like it.
Straddling the top rope less out of showmanship than simple necessity, the 'Beast from the East' unfurled his vast frame before their eyes.
Standing 7ft tall and weighing in at a scale-breaking 23 stones, Nikolai Valuev's notoriety was secure even before the first bell sounded.
Valuev's opponent that night in 1996, the positively compact 6ft 2in Carmarthen journeyman named Darren Fearn, blinked up somewhere beyond the ring lights at the size of the task in hand.

Fearn did not reach the end of the third round on a low-key card which also offered the British debut of a much-hyped Puerto Rican heavyweight called John Ruiz.

On Saturday night in Berlin, to the particular surprise of Frank Maloney, the promoter who briefly looked after the interests of both men and was responsible for bringing them to Bethnal Green, Valuev and Ruiz meet with the WBA heavyweight title at stake.
"He can't fight but he's a freak of nature who intimidates people," said Maloney of the 32-year-old Valuev, who has won all 42 of his previous well-matched professional contests.
"The way the heavyweight division is at the moment he is big enough to win something. He could become the next sensation of the division simply because of his novelty value.

"I remember when one of my agents in Russia told me about this so-called 'Beast from the East'. From the moment I saw him, I knew I could do something with him."
Valuev's progress to date has been greeted with the peculiar kind of passing interest usually reserved for circus strong men and other human oddities.

In November 2004, the luckless Gerald Nobles, a whole foot-and-a-bit shorter than his giant opponent, seemed to have good cause to protest when he was disqualified for firing repeated low blows.
Were he to beat Ruiz, Valuev would make history as the tallest and heaviest of all the world boxing champions, comfortably beating the previous record of 6ft 7in, 19st Primo Carnera, and boasting an extraordinary 10-stone weight advantage over Rocky Marciano.
Yet Valuev's size and almost inevitably lumbering style will always attract more comparisons with the tragic, ridiculed Carnera than with those greats of history such as Marciano.

Carnera was the ruthlessly exploited Italian who was plucked from his peasant upbringing by mobsters who bullied and bribed him all the way to the world heavyweight title.
Once his reign was over, having been contemptuously dismissed by Max Baer, floored 11 times in as many rounds in their 1934 title fight, Carnera was abandoned back into poverty.

It is against such a weight of history that Valuev must battle to establish himself as a genuine and deserving world title claimant irrespective of the outcome of his fight against Ruiz.
Valuev's best wins to date came with stoppages of reigning European champion Paolo Vidoz and fading fringe contender Clifford Etienne, plus a majority verdict over Larry Donald in his last fight.
Yet observers have noted that, for all his physical attributes, Valuev is no human wrecking ball, but like Carnera a relatively soft and ponderous puncher.

Still, despite largely dismissing Valuev's abilities, Maloney believes the Russian is easily capable of beating the brawling, bustling, 6ft 2in Ruiz.
"Valuev looks like he is the right man at the right time and I'm sure he will be much too big for Ruiz, who is the champion by default," added Maloney.
Having long since separated from Maloney and teamed up with the German promoter Wilfred Sauerland, Valuev will expect some degree of popular support in Berlin's Max Schmeling Halle.

Incidentally, the great German champion Schmeling would have been forced to give away almost 10 stones and a foot in height had he prepared to face Valuev in his prime.
However, Carnera's sad story suggests Valuev too is destined to remain a carnival act first, a world champion second.

As the 7ft 1in NBA basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain once conceded: "Nobody ever cheers for Goliath".

From a boxingtalk.net article about the fight:
"It may not be an easy task to defeat Ruiz, who is in training as this is written, working extra hard on his jab and grab style while the controversial hothead, Stone no doubt is studying his "How to piss people off in German" audio cassette tapes."

I am looking forward on Ruiz' tactics. Will he wrestle with Nico for 12 rounds? Unbelievable. He only has a chance when he moves quickly.

That just isnt his game though....
There arent many jab and move boxers out there at heavy....
in fact Donald from memory is one of the better movers (or atleast was in his prime, i didnt see the Valuev fight)

Yes, Donald, whilst a boring heavyweight, had the right style to frustrate and avoid Valuev who certainly isn't a mover. Ruiz however is a jab and grab merchant, and that's surely got to be disaster for Ruiz.

yeah, as the old cliche goes, styles make fights....
To beat Valuev in my opinion, you gotta
A)be a good mover with great gas or
B)hit hard enough to KO him with one shot

Not many current heavies fall into that category

Valuev seems to hold a shot pretty well too, look at the size of his skull, it's probably about 6 inches thick, and his neck is absolutely huge.

Unlike most gigantic guys, he's pretty well proportioned, he's not at all lanky.

I always thought Michael Jordan would have made a pretty good boxer, he was incredibly athletic for his size.

Probably would have fared better than he did in his baseball career, that's for sure.

It's not looking good for Ruiz...he could only scrape a draw in the pre-fight paper, scissors, stone match-up

Ruiz looks like a middleweight there. And Valuev looks like you could drop a piano on him and he'd barely notice.

Still, he didn't like the straight right hands Donald was landing: against a harder puncher I got the impression he'd have been out of there.

Reckon he'll out jab Ruiz for a points win. And if he somehow manages to demolish Ruiz, the guy could be a superstar: the general public will love it - novelty value could translate into BIG bucks.

On the undercard, with dad at ringside - ( blonde looks like a school teacher! )

holy fornicate ! it really looks like they are not fighting in the same weigh division!
frankly, i don't see any issue for Ruiz in this one...i think to beat Valuev, you have to :
- be very agile with a lot of gas and move really quick to frustrate hil
- be extremely strong and hit hard as hell to hurt him bad

so far, Ruiz hasnt any of those 2 qualities...he is the opponent who could make Valuev shine...

My T Sharp - That was pretty funny.

Seriously though, Ruiz is looking podgy.

James, I know what your saying - but Donald is 38 and usually cacks it when fighting big men - Klitchsko, Bowe.

I think Valuev's punching power - or lack of it, could be a huge factor.

A tough 1, Ruiz managed to jab and grab his way to victory against Golota (a fair 1 imo), it will be a bit harder against Valuev, Valuevs much stronger and rangier - he could KO Ruiz and early if he bullys him. If Ruiz gets his rythm going it could be a tight points decision either way. Who'll be stronger late? I'd expect such a big man to tire.

Valuev hasn't ever been forced to work really hard so far, he's normally bludgeoned people or just kept them away, but Ruiz' style demands that he grabs and hugs. Golota was stronger, but not that much bigger, how the hell do you grapple with Valuev?
