Ayub Kalule did well too.
Re: Africas top boxers.
Woller,
Ayub Kalule is one of the best fighters out of Uganda along with John "The Beast" Mugabi.
NYDominican,
It's Gerrie Coetzee not Coetzer.

For Zambia = Joseph Chingangu. He was once declared dead by media sources, Joseph had to prove he was indeed not dead. Tough guy, he is still fighting.
John Mugabi = Uganda
Brian Mitchel = S.A.
Welcome Ncita = S.A.
Vic Toweel = S.A.

Re: Africas top boxers.
Marcel Cerdan was a Pied Noir born & boxed in Algeria, also known as the 'Casablanca Clouter'. 117 - 4 - 0, he fought from Welterweight to Middleweight winning titles in both divisions. Most memorable fights were against Tony Zale and Jake LaMotta.
Re: Africas top boxers.
Mitchell, Nelson, Tiger and John the Beast definitely head any list.
A few others to add to the pot.....from some other countries.
Harry Simon - Namibia
Sumbu Kalambay - boxed in Italy but from Zaire/Congo
Battling Siki - Senegal. Way back when, but ko'd the legendary Georges Carpentier to be LH champ of the world.

Dingaan Thobela?
Re: Africas top boxers.
Bungu and Ncita are both highly underrated.
Mitchell was very good and made the majority of his title defences on the road.

As far as I'm aware, Brian Mitchell was forced by politics to defend his title exclusively away from home, mostly right in the other fellas back yard.orbtastic wrote:Bungu and Ncita are both highly underrated.

Hence his (enforced) nickname, The Road Warrior.
Only 1 loss in 49 fights
12 title defences (still the record), all on the road, and he never lost a title fight.
That's pretty amazing.

I've always been partial to Battling Siki.Bodyshot3 wrote:Mitchell, Nelson, Tiger and John the Beast definitely head any list.

What a character. Everyone should check out his wild war with Carpentier that took place in Paris, circa 1922.
Siki KOd the champ in a back-and-forth brawl, but the hometown referee awarded the bout to Carpentier on a bogus foul. Carpentier was out cold but the ref said Siki tripped him. Go figure.
The fans weren't amused and the judges quickly changed the decision.
Siki lost his title to an Irishman, Mike McTigue, on St. Patrick's Day in Dublin. That's pretty much like trying to beat JC Chavez (the original) in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo. Ain't gonna happen.
Always a hard partier, Siki was murdered in 1925 when he was shot from behind.
Apparently, the slaying has never been solved.

At 42, Ben Tackie is about to pull the gloves on again.NYDominican wrote:Africas top boxers. In no particular order.

Ramón Álvarez, brother of Canelo, has had his scheduled opponent, Jorge Páez, withdraw with a hand injury. In his place now is Tackie.
The same Ben Tackie who challenged Kostya Tszyu for the WBC/WBA/IBF jr welterweight titles way back in 2002.
Not sure this has a good look to it.
