Boxing is on the downward slide
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
Posts like this annoy me, only this month there were 80,000 fans in attendance watching Carl Froch and George Groves square off in London and Mayweather and Manny are the two highest paid sportsman on the planet every year. I know that here in New Zealand boxing seems to be booming, there's a lot more shows than there used to be and although not ideal, there's a lot more corporate fights than amateur or pro fights happening, in the long run it has to be getting people interested in our sport. Last night I went to the fights and there was a great turn out, two more prospects plying there trade (Shay Brock and John Leighton) both getting 2nd round stoppages.
You have a Lot more boxing in Australia than we do here, my advice is stop your whinging and go along and support it.

MMA has taken over ? It gets even less press coverage than boxing, the average guy on the street will know at least a few boxing names and probably zero MMA fighters, I take it your a very casual fan that just watches ko highlights on YouTube and knows nothing else about boxing well I don't think we will miss you if you take your fanship to the fast food version of combat sports.... go on then off ya pop !
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
Can you give some stats that suggest MMA has taken over? And where has this occurred?
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
No evidence of downward slide & I've been recording Oz results for 11 years. If anything, the way things are panning out this year.....it's on the up.

Australian boxing is on the up and up at present. Our guys are getting good fights left right and centre.
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
IMO, MMA has generated alcohol/drug infested one punch street heroes
I dare say, one would need to be blood thirsty to referee cage fighting

Watching grown men dry hump each other on the ground is not my idea of entertainment. Mma is boring unless there standing.

I think our sport is at a bit of a lull as far as local cards go, but we have been here before. I am confident that it will turn around again. Would love to see fighters tested at Comm Title level again. But I amfraid the media are too bamboozled by interim and other crappy titles. I am just waiting for the next local card, maybey Malvern or Flemington.BTW in July all the boxing world will b on an Aussie Dan Geale. A real title and a real gentleman

The media barely have a specialist boxing columnist left. That is one of the biggest problems and it enables unscrupulous promoters to feed them bullshit stories about big fights and titles and they not only believe it. They print it.Grant wrote:I think our sport is at a bit of a lull as far as local cards go, but we have been here before. I am confident that it will turn around again. Opponents are imported with phony records or just plain shit records and magically a title is on the line and the newspaper swallows a bullshit story about a big fight and a title and the fight is a joke.

Has anyone noticed Fox Sports commentators nor ring announcer name the Regional title...nor it shows its belt presentation?

Those titles are crap anyway.AntonS wrote:Has anyone noticed Fox Sports commentators nor ring announcer name the Regional title...nor it shows its belt presentation?
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
I think boxing is booming both internationally and locally. There have been some great match ups in recent times and some very good ones in the near future.
MMA will never take over boxing. Critics said it 5 years ago, and it didn't happen and it wont happen in the future.

MMA seems to be doing OK in New South Wales, but as good as stuffed in other States
MMA is a current trend which in time will ultimately die

Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
UFC PPV numbers are on the declne. Boxing PPV numbers are on the incline. That pretty much ends the argument

They aren't even allowed to fight in a cage in Victoria. That keeps the UFC away.AntonS wrote:MMA seems to be doing OK in New South Wales, but as good as stuffed in other States

Both Sam Rapira and Nik the Greek look good prospects, be interesting to see how the former goes against unbeaten Aussie Aaron Laid next month. Robbie Berridge is world ranked at light heavy, along with Adrian Taihia it's a stacked division in NZ. Joe Blackburn is looking good at super middle and of coarse heavyweight Joseph Parker is going great guns early in his career. There's a few for you to digest.
Re: Boxing is on the downward slide
Every time I turn on my Foxtel, I can almost guarantee UFC is on. Boxing gets a bit of play, But no where near as close as UFC. It shits me up the wall.
UFC will be on every day. Boxing you get two fights a week, or re runs of those badly put together ESPN mini docos.
The pubs I go to are always more packed out when UFC is on than boxing out in S.E Melbourne. So son't know what y'all tripping on. Sh!t seems dead in comparison from where I'm sitting.
