slipping punches
drills to improve fighting reflexes and defence that can be done by yourself
Re: slipping punches
sparring is the best way. Anything you do by yourself will be inferior to sparring. However, practice it shadow boxing, on the double end bag, slip ball, punch mitts etc.
Re: slipping punches
Agree. Sparring is essential otherwise won't get the timing down, but you can work on it while shadowboxing to help work the right muscles.

Re: slipping punches
Slipping punches are all about secondary muscle memory.
Repetition, repetition, repetition.
A mirror and time are the only real essentials.
Once competent at the core movements the sparring will nail down the timing.

Re: slipping punches
As a non-boxer, what about the rope drills that you see people doing, bobbing under a rope from side to side?

They're excellent but not much point to a beginner until you get the footwork down to being second nature.@matt___s wrote:As a non-boxer, what about the rope drills that you see people doing, bobbing under a rope from side to side?
You'd be better of drawing or creating a straight line on the gym floor and placing feet either side as you learn the movements of slipping, rolling and moving forwards/backwards in your correct stance.

Re: slipping punches
So as far as training from home as extra training its only really shadow boxing?
Re: slipping punches
There's a small maize ball you can buy called a 'slipping ball'; you may get one from Sugar Rays, Ringside or ebay. There was famous footage of Mike Tyson using one to develop his slipping technique.

We do drills like a round of shadow boxing without thrown punches just head movement
And footwork fainting, slipping, rolling in and out.
Re: slipping punches
Also we do something we call schooling you need a partner it like very light sparring but you discuss wat punches your partner throws at you between rounds so you know wat to expect then you slip make him miss and throw your combo hitting him either on the gloves or not at all there's a video on you tube called boxing Cuba 2010 there's 2 fellas in it doing the same thing it might help you out
Re: slipping punches
You can put a piece of tape on the mirror the width of a boxing glove and when shadow boxing in front of the mirror, move your head to both sides of the tape. Don't bend at the waist. Twist at the waist and bend at the knees.
