Alan Vaughan; what happened?

After watching 21-year-old Luke Campbell become European Senior amateur champion yesterday, I started to wonder whatever happened to Alan Vaughan from Liverpool. I seem to remember a few years ago he became the World Junior gold medalist at lightweight (I think) and at the time he was regarded a massive prospect like an Amir Khan, Frankie Gavin or an Errol Christie. Then he just simply seem to disappear from the boxing world. What happened to him and exactly how good was he?

I seem to remember a few years ago he became the World Junior gold medalist at lightweight (I think) and at the time he was regarded a massive prospect like an Amir Khan, Frankie Gavin or an Errol Christie. Then he just simply seem to disappear from the boxing world. What happened to him and exactly how good was he?

Alan was a tall stylist who picked up featherweight gold in the world juniors in 1990 with four wins, one of them over a Cuban. He was then kept out of the ABAs as they groomed him for the 1992 Olympics. He reached the last four of the European seniors in 1990, where he was outscored by Irish southpaw Paul Griffin (who went on to win the featherweight gold), but a first-round loss in an England v Poland international in 1991 signified that maybe Alan wasn't going to make it as a top senior. He still secured the Olympic berth in 1992 - up at lightweight - and got turned over by Canadian Billy Irwin in three rounds in the preliminary stages.
Yes, he seemed to disappear after that.

I remember Vaughan endorsing boxing gear in Boxing News classifieds ads and I think I remember him being interviewed on BBC's Going Live (Saturday's morning kids show) as a teenager who had the potential to become a Olympic champion. Sounds like his chin was his achilles heel then?

He was a very good boxer though, just had that weakness which is the worst one to have in boxing.

just stumbled on this post its true alan did not go on to achieve in the seniors what he should of but he was going to struggle to even match what he did as a junior world champion . but as been said went to barca olympics and won an european bronze losing to paul griffin 20-18 if i remember and was unlucky to lose that one i thought

he packed in for a few years about 3 i think after barca but came back at light welter and won abas so he was not a failure at senior level . he tried to join the marines but failed a medical knee problems . he went down last year i believe 500.000 cannabis
he was a brilliant boxer though huyton abc had 3 cracking lads in them days all the same age group alan peter culshaw and a brilliant boxer called michael armishaw allways wondered what happend to michael armishaw `won nabc schoolboy nationals then disapeared shame

Alan was a top top class amateur. And is well on the way to becoming a top class coach. He helps train the boys at Kirkby abc. And they've got a great squad together there including Alan's young son. Who is very very talented

Alan had 95 fights losing 7 among them wins where victories over world champions Paul ingle and diosbelys hurtado and many other champions. After the Olympics Alan had a few years out of the sport after returning to the sport he won an senior A.B.A title stopping every opponent on his way to the title. The knockout in the Olympics can be seen on YouTube. And it's hard to see how the fight was stopped.

My pal Roger Sampson boxed him as an amateur schoolboy and just said he was unbelievable then. Roger was no slouch himself beating Wayne rigby and micheal ayers as a pro

I remember being at that bout In Everton Park Sports centre against Peacock and Alan Vaughan was 18 years old and it was his 1st senior contest and what a very lucky shot it was, Alan never got knocked out but he did go down and got back to his feet and the ref. stopped it and lucky for peacock at the time. I remember Alan has only just Won World under 19s title in Lima,Peru in October 1990 then he knocked out the number 1 American in Hilton hotel ,London in Nov 1990, Really he shouldn't of went in the Abas in jan 1991 after achieving something unbelievable,And really waited until he matured into his natural weight, I recently watched some of Alans fights on you tube class and total respect to him

Watched that bout against Tommy peacock and Alan Vaughan was 18 years old and never got knocked out, he got dropped with the luckiest punch imaginable and the ref stopped the contest with Alan on his feet, Shame really Alan only just achieved world honors and should of never went in ABA championships after such a great achievement, brilliant prospect and deserves ultimate respect for what he achieved for English boxing back in the day.

I was at that bout in 1991 it was Alan vaughans first senior contest in Liverpool against Tommy peacock and seen Alan Vaughan get dropped with nothing but a lucky shot and the referre stopped the contest with him on his feet, not knocked out as stated. We must remember Alan had stopped number 1 American weeks earlier, And also achieved an unimaginable feat by becomimg Britians First World u19s Boxing Champion months Earlier. Let's remember he was 18 years old and really shouldn't of entered the senior ABAs, nowadays it wouldn't of happened

Ya obviously not reading recent posts about Alan Vaughan cas he just run the London marathon for (NSPCC)and achieved a lot of money for them. Also he helps out with the local boxing club in Kirkby ABC and achieved 4 national champions last season with the team he works with.
