Welterweight Manuel Lopez French flyweight champ in 1942?!

Post by Kohall »

Boxrec has listed welterweight Manuel Lopez (ID 609458) as French flyweight champion in 1942. He is supposed to have defeated Etienne Ferraro in Algiers 1942-07-25. Of course, he didn't.
Neither Lopez nor Ferraro appeared on that particular card in Algiers according to L'Echo d'Alger 1942-07-26. However, the same newspaper reported that ”Lopez a battu Ferraro à Marseille, pour le titre des mouches laissé vacant par Ben Omar”. The date is probably correct, the place is Marseille and the Lopez in question could rather be André.
L'Echo d'Alger of 1942-03-14 reported that Ben Omar had outpointed Etienne Ferraro for the French flyweight title Z.N.O. (non occupied zone) in Oran on 1942-03-13, so that must be the title left vacant.
