Gerald McClellan, overrated?

Post by The Keed »

I don't understand why people had such a high regard for this guy, or why he was even such a big favorite over Benn.

The guy had a big punch and a good chin, but he was kind of one-dimensional and had poor defense. I thought Benn exposed his limitations. I did think the ref saved Benn in the first round by fussing over stupid fouls, but from the 2nd round until Benn went down again (in the 8th?), I thought Benn dominated the fight. And he never really changed his strategy much. Benn would bob, weave, then leap in with a hook or a right. McClellan just kept walking into it, and I don't think in the whole fight McClellan tried a single uppercut (to catch Benn while he was crouching). He just kept trying overhand rights, which Benn knew how to duck. Then around the 8th round Benn got nailed again and that's what made the fight close, but then he pretty much went back to dominating McClellan again.

The only really quality fighter McClellan ever beat was Julian Jackson, who was past his prime. Jackson's right hands were slow and his reflexes were slow, but he still managed to clobber McClellan good a few times, but then just got nailed. I think if Jackson could still fire that right hand like he could in his youth he would've KO'd McClellan. And besides, Jackson even in his prime, was always a bit limited and always had a bit questionable chin.

You know when i first read the above article i thought "oh please".
But as much as i feel for McClellan at present, a valid point has
been brought up. Aside from the two Julian Jackson fights, and a
shop worn John Mugabi sweep... who has he fought ? Benn, and
we all know the outcome of that fight. Still a k.o. artist though.
