Do you think that Sergio Martinez's corner people were just friends of his, up in New York for a holiday ??

Were they simply hopeless, or what . He might have been embarrassed with his knee supports , but those shorts - dear oh dear. Once the corner had thrown buckets of water over them, there was no way they were staying up. Thank goodness for the over sized protector, or they 'd be down at his knees. The whole thing was a complete and utter shambles, disgraceful for a world champion.

On a more technical note, I don't know if anyone else noticed how flat footed Martinez was. He was moving around on his heels, with no spring in his step at all. His knees were obviously ruined. I wonder just how bad his preparation was?

Pretty sure one of the cornermen was Pablo Sarmiento, who fought a few times in Britain.

I couldn't decide if team Martinez had just wheeled a crippled man into the ring for one last payday, or if Cotto's fearsome start just basically ruined Martinez's chances and strategy, and perhaps caused knee problems by him having to get up so many times in the first round. As Bunce said afterwards, it seems accepted that win lose or draw Martinez was never going to get into the ring again.

His team knew his knees were shot, before the fight, they still went for the pay day.

Tend to agree with the thinking that Martinez just went in for one last payday. The win flattered Cotto massively; he'll get steam rolled by GGG if the fight ever happens IMO.

I think you're right, Cotto is a fans fighter. He gives it everything in every fight, and for that reason I like to see him doing well, but he lacks that 'something extra' that world class fighters have. Basically, he's easy to hit, and Golovkin would utterly destroy him, very early, but I'd still pay to see it .

I saw sarmiento against lynes - Pablo said it was going to be his last fight...colin won a split decision...let's just say it was a bit dodgy

bloody hell. finally had a look at the fight. Martinez had no legs and was clearly damaged goods, and his body looked soft. that was horrible to behold: should he have been passed fit to fight? cotto really is ruthless when he has a handicapped opponent (see yuri foreman).

that said, if cotto can get some big names up at middleweight where the extra pound and a bit seemed to add some vitality he can have a really exciting rivalry with saul alvarez and can do better in a rematch with mayweather up at 160. a lot of ppl will be praying for alvarez to win his difficuly matchup with lara. alvarez is another fighter who could do with a move up in weight.

cotto certainly won't do that to a fully fit, top 10 middleweight again. he had some clout and used it to get the right fight, and he put in a solid performance on the big stage.
