Re: The Sixtieth Anniversay of Rocky Marciano vs Ezzard Charles
Check out this link to a post-fight photograph taken of Ezzard Charles not too long after the bout,
(probably after he had showered and cleaned up some).
"He finished the fight with his face knocked lopsided,a blood clot in his left cheek and his right eye bruised, swollen and partly closed"
(however no mention of the shape of his "Goozle Pipe' in that particular article tho).

This weekend,I will be going over to where my storage unit is locatedCaractacus wrote:Here is a link where you can get a CD of it or even an audio download too.Caractacus wrote:Back in 2001 Bill Cayton released a series of audio CD'S of original Radio Broadcasts including some of Joe Louis's and Rocky Marciano's fights.
called BILL CAYTON'S PRIME TIME BOXING.
One CD was that of the orginal ABC Radio broadcast with Legendary Don Dunphy calling of Marciano vs Charles I.
However I dont think that one is even compleat.
Its running time is only 43 minutes and its missing about 3 rounds of the original radio broadcast from June 17.1954.
Also if I remember correctly, for some reason Bill Cayton chimed in on the CD itself and interrupts the flow of
the original real time broadcast as first heard live, on the CD.
You know why he probably did that dont you?

(over on the Po' side of town).
I will get the box of cd's I have stashed there and will listen to it again(I havent listened to it in almost 10 years).
I will report back here and tell you all which rounds are on the CD(and if there compleat rounds)
and which rounds are missing from the CD ABC Radio broadcast

here is a link to another very interesting post-fight newspaper article
(and from an African-American newspaper's perspective which covered the fight while watching it live with an all black crowd at a closed-circuit theatre in Baltimore,Maryland,

I would have to agree with the Rock that the' goozle pipe punch'probably was the wild left hook that MarcianoCaractacus wrote:Here is a abridged version of Marciano vs Charles I.
(rounds One,Four,Five,Six,Ten and Fifteen only)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FSPJC7qSAeg
had landed in the 14th round of this bout.
Because in the film footage ,Charles face just starts to puff up in that round and it really puffed up in the 15th round.

Here is a terrific montage of still photographs taken during all 15 rounds as
appeared in the June.28.1954 edition of LIFE magazine
pp 16-17.
(you can see how bad the cut was over Marciano's left eye).

Re: The Sixtieth Anniversay of Rocky Marciano vs Ezzard Charles
I was able to listen to the CD of Marciano vs Charles I again.
Here is a listing of the rounds available on it.
Round 1-compleat
Round 2-compleat
Round 3-missing
Round 4-missing
Round 5-missing
Round 6-compleat(well almost compleat, for some reason the first 40 seconds are missing from one of the greatest rounds in heavyweight history on this CD)
Round 7-compleat
Round 8-compleat
Round 9-compleat
Round 10-missing
Round 11-compleat
Round 12-missing
Round 13-missing
Round 14-compleat
Round 15-compleat
The running time of the entire CD is only 43 minutes of which only about 35 minutes are that of the original ABC Radio broadcast of June.17.1954.
Along with 9 rounds missing from the CD,also missing is Bill Corum's colour commentery between each of the rounds.
But IMOP This CD is well worth listening to. Don Dunphy does the blow by blow ringside call.
and rounds 7,8 and 9 sound almost exciting as round 6.
You should hear the crowd of 50,000 roar in Yankee stadium during those rounds.
here is a link where you can get a CD of it or even an audio download too.
(listen to referee Ruby Goldstein giving the fighters the instructions in the sample available here)

Thanks for this ; isn't it amazing that such a high profile fight is missing it's full film and radio broadcast (i am not an expert on radio broadcasts so unsure whether the full broadcast does exist)

Re: The 60th Anniversay of Rocky Marciano vs Ezzard Charles(I)
Im pretty sure that the original full one hour ABC radio broadcast still exists.
I think the reason that the CD is only 43 minutes long,is because
I seem to remember that Bill Cayton's PRIME TIME BOXING
was a syndicated radio series back in 2000.
I think all of the CD's released in the series are that length
so that they could put in commercials in-between during those 17 minutes.
Bill Cayton and Bob Page do the recent(2000)introduction at the beginning of the CD
and in-btween rounds talk about the fight and both fighters careers.
I guess what happened in rounds three, twelve and thirteen will remain a mystery(for now anyway).

Re: The 60th Anniversay of Rocky Marciano vs Ezzard Charles(I)
Don Dunphy had some great quotes on the ABC live radio broadcast, like,
'Marciano's face is a gorey mess,no question about it".
"Charles just wont go down,he's like that big bag up at Grossinger's"
"Marciano is unbridled fury, here in the fifteenth round".
