Arguello - Mancini - analysis video

Post by arlovski »

Enjoyed doing the last video on McCallum so thought i'd do one on another of my favourites.

Arguello really was all class, in and out of the ring; another amazingly composed and patient fighter - i think he only threw a couple of right hands in the first half of this fight, everything he did was so measured, nothing wasted.

Anyway, hope some of you find it interesting...

The master boxer of the 1980s, along with Salvador Sanchez, a super fight that was almost made & it's such a loss it never was. Both died in tragic circumstances...

Mancini was the golden boy of American television, a hell of a fighter, but he couldn't have taken on a tougher champion than Alexis Arguello. A true gentleman of the ring, who hugged Ray's father before and after the fight, but still leant over the referee to get in one final finishing punch, a true gentleman with a killer instinct.

Good stuff. I really like the idea of those videos. Do you think you could talk as well as/instead of adding the writing? Dispassionate spoken analysis of classic fights done right could be a great teaching aide.

great point. Arguello's left hook was very under-rated, here he mostly keeps his right at home (other than thudding the uppercut under Mancini's ribcage when he slips the Mancini right hand) and he's able to stay well in the fight with the left hook.

i think my Yorkshire drawl would spoil the action mate :DDD

Agreed studying tapes of classic fights is a top teaching aid, the ability to slow things down to really look at the little technical aspects is great, as they're so easy to miss when a fight is in full flow.

Yeah the left hook of his has always stood out for me, whipped over so quickly for a tall guy, so impressive. Diego Corrales is the only other tall lanky guy since that springs to mind that threw such an effective short left hook, works so well against their shorter opponents trying to close distance

O/T but it's also interesting to note the foot-and-head-movement of Mancini at this point in his career. he actually had some.

not unlike Hatton, he seemed to regress on those aspects as his career went on, to the point of becoming a stereotypical straight ahead guy who wouldn't move his head if you pointed a shotgun at it.

Yep, i was actually surprised revisiting the fight this time around - like you say Mancini had very good head movement - slipping Arguello's jab inside and out, rolling his way in and out of range, and landing decent shots. For a 21 year old kid he was impressive.

Arguello just never looked flustered though, reading some old newspaper reports he apparently went back to the corner after 4 rounds and told them he'd need more rounds to figure him out, rather than the early blowout they expected.

Also read yesterday that it was Eddie Futch who told Alexis to start throwing the right uppercut to the body from the mid rounds onwards, how often do you see that shot thrown these days?! But it landed so often, and must have really taken it's toll on Mancini as the fight progressed

it's a connoisseur's shot, mate- it's often overlooked/unnoticed even when it's thrown :TU:

Having watched it twice more back to back, apart from the above-noted wonderful short left hook & sickening right uppercut to the body the thing which got me again was Arguello after the fight, no jumping on ring ropes, no clapping wildly, kept his composure, utterly dignified...

& the timing of the man...

Sigh. I'm off to watch him flatten Kevin Rooney again now.

Thank you again, arlovski mate.

Thanks mate, glad you're finding them useful - although if you're taking on board half the stuff that these masters do and end up being a world champion legend yourself, i want my cut mate :DDD

No probs mate :TU:

Yep, the man was all class, the complete opposite of some of the gobsh*te clowns around today.

Timing is the key isn't it? I'm a similar build to Arguello, tried to get some of those short left hooks working in sparring tonight and ended up looking like an drowning orangutan, i cannot get over how he was able to deliver that shot over and over again whilst sliding backwards out of range of his opponent coming in.

The thing about the right uppercut/bolo to the belly is it's such a dangerous shot if some one times and counters you with the left hook, such was the brilliance of the man that no one ever did ( memory's shot but don't think Pryor did with that shot either did he?). Met AA once, very gracious and complimentary, told me "you boxed very well, unlucky", with a lovely smile, when in truth I boxed like dogpoo, couldn't get outta the way of the other guys jab and was as far removed from AA as you could get. superb fighter.

not really, no (haven't seen it in a bit but I am pretty sure), but mostly becuase from my memory Arguello threw only maybe 1/3 of the right hands to the body vs Pryor that he threw vs Mancini: the reason being, in my opinion, that Pryor wasn't throwing single right hands that Arguello could slip/roll and counter, he was finishing with the left when he did throw the 1-2 or lead with the right, so he wasn't giving Arguello the same opportunities for that bodyshot for exactly the reason you were getting at, his right hand had to stay at home more, to cater for Pryor's left (and Pryor's handspeed was in any case making him much more difficult to time the bodyshot counter)

Mancini was absolutely made for the great Arguello, who had a weakness to movers. In fact I was amazed that Mancini lasted 14 rounds because there was a feeling that the good ol' blue collar boy with the hard luck story was a TV creation but Ray could fight and certainly lacked nothing in conditioning, as he would prove in horrific circumstances a year later.
George Feeney said that Mancini really hurt him to the body

At 42 years old and never boxed, I reckon the absolute heights are out of my reach :) I'm just really enjoying learning some of the subtleties of the craft; I'm a good observer, reader and predictor of fights, but despite having watched and analysed since I was a teenager, there's loads here I hadn't really spotted.

One of the things (among many) that i love about Arguello is he was a gentleman, he proved that you don't have to be in an opponents face before a fight, no bravado. He'd go into a press conferance and wish his opponent well.

When Arron Pryor went to his first press conferance to annouce the Arguello fight, he thought he'd get up in Alexis's face and try and rile him with a few choice words. But Arguello was so glowing in his praise of Pryor, that Arron couldn't bring himself to insult him, they just shook hands.

Also when Alexis lost to Pryor for the 2nd time, he went across the ring and said 'Ah Pryor my old friend'

Now that takes class
