For the fans, probably. Kostya was picked at just the right time and paid a fortune to come. That win set Ricky up for the future blockbusters. 6 or 7 fights earlier? No way. I guess Eddie would have sent him to Madison Square Garden to fight Cotto as a voluntary...rio wrote:No chance. There is a reason ricky left him. He was ready for a title shot 6-7 fights before he fought for one and the cotto fight should have been made weather it was when they were prospects/contenders or when they were both world champions. The fans were robbed of a great fight. Honestly struggle to think of a better fight than an unbeaten cotto vs hatton at 140, it would have been a war.mickey1975 wrote:Well don't. Cotto was slightly vulnerable at 140lb but he could still hit and was an excellent professional. Corley shook him to his boots and Torres had him in all sorts of bother, in one of my favourite fights of all time.
I think against Hatton in his finest hour, he might have gassed in the final third if he didn't get Ricky out of there.
Sky was building a match between the pair because ahead of one Hatton fight, they had a segment from PR were they had an interview with Cotto talking about Hatton and Miguel said he had no problem with fighting Hatton or anybody else for that matter.
Cotto was thinner and thinner making 140 to the point were he was stood on stage with pharmaceutical drinks that were for dehydrated babies.
His swan song at 140 was breaking Paulie's jaw at the MSG.
I was keen to see how he'd fair at welter, and when he took on unbeaten knockout artist and fellow countryman Carlos Quintana, and stopped him with body shots , I knew that he was only going to get better and better and by then he would be too much for Hatton to handle.
For me, Miguel has been one of the highlights of the entire sport in the last ten years.
Maybe I'm wearing rose tinted glasses, but I think it's a shame he lost to a scumbag with concrete gloves, and a juiced-up flyweight.
The loss to Trout was strange, he seemed rather disinterested in that fight, whilst Austin had a great night.
Otherwise he's had an amazing career.

Not saying anything I wouldn't say to the mans face but whenever I met Ricky I found him a bit rude and stand offish. His dad didn't let me have a signed glove for my boy coz he said it'll end up on eBay. Prick.my in laws are just back from holiday where pricky was and he was off his tits asking everyone for gear.the geezer is a proper street rat. Very rude to my father in law. Man still has people happy to see and meet him and he acts like that. Scummer

I've always found Paul Speak knocking people back for autographs or trying to get a tenner for them. Hatton has been sound when not around Speak.johnnygreaves wrote:Not saying anything I wouldn't say to the mans face but whenever I met Ricky I found him a bit rude and stand offish. What Ricky does or does not sign at a dinner show, is entirely down to the promoter of the show and the terms he's set out whilst employing Ricky's services.mickey1975 wrote: I've always found Paul Speak knocking people back for autographs or trying to get a tenner for them. For example, at Carl Greaves show in Newark, there was no problem with Ricky signing the flyer or menu for the evening.
Yet another show, in Birmingham, you were afforded a slot to que and pay for a proper photo and that was your lot.
As far as Speak goes, he's got to take a controlled and firm approach to be a human barrier between fans and Ricky, because that's his job - and if he didn't , then he'd not being his job properly.
I've met Ricky and Paul in the changing rooms and they were very decent people indeed. I have also seen 400 kegged-up pissheads in a hotel banquet suite and naturally they both have their guard up slightly more for obvious reasons.
There's hundreds of people all wanting a ten minute chat apiece which isn't possible unless the show went on until 6am. So they are hustled along. It's not ideal but it's the way it goes.

The fact I wasn't at an celeb dinner, just fighting one of hattons prospects on a hatton show is a bit different.

I've come across Ricky in a few different situations. Only once at a paid for appearance(where he was very good).G0mez wrote:What Ricky does or does not sign at a dinner show, is entirely down to the promoter of the show and the terms he's set out whilst employing Ricky's services.mickey1975 wrote: I've always found Paul Speak knocking people back for autographs or trying to get a tenner for them. And whilst I get your point, Speak talks to the Pisscans like they're children. You can tell he's an ex cop. Plenty of stories in the game about him being a twat, too.
Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
I can only say as I find, and he was superb in organising a load of stuff for charity and also facilitated some free tickets too for raffles - and was good at updating everyone as to when stuff was being arranged and posted out.mickey1975 wrote:And whilst I get your point, Speak talks to the Pisscans like they're children. Ricky would have had his moments, but I reckon the first three rows would be drenched in blood by the final few rounds as Hatton would be stopped.
Would've been a great fight.

Cotto, by KO.
Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
Prime Hatton vs. Prima Kostya Tsyzu?
Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
Cotto would have taken him to pieces at any weight.
Hatton whilst a good fighter was not on the same level as Miguel.

A draw. With both fighters having their kidneys and livers removed afterward in what would possibly be the most exciting fight of all time

Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
Tszyu went into the Hatton fight on the back of one of his better wins when he battered Sharmba Mitchell in far easier fashion than he'd managed in their first fight. Kostya had plenty in the tank the night he met Ricky Hatton, that he managed to go 11 rounds with Hatton that night is testament to that. Hatton was just rampant on the night and on that night he'd have given any fighter in 140 history a battle.columbo wrote:Yeah but you also have to remember that Hattons best win was against Tszyu who himself was past it when they fought and had hardly fought in 2 years or something.Crease wrote:Just to be clear, I thought that we were talking about Light Welter.
But it's no uncommon in these threads, to see poster gravitate toward the guy who is currently doing well as their predicted victor. But, let's no forget how great a fighter Hatton was in his day. Just because he lost to Mayweather & Pacquaio - it doesn't devalue his class as a fighter.
Hatton/Cotto at 140......it'd be Hatton. Miguel was weight weakened at light-welter and simply could not fight at any kind of pace. He had to fight in spurts to conserve energy. Hatton would have been all over him forcing a hellish pace that Cotto would not have coped with. Hatton by TKO at 140. Though at 147 the advantage would've probably gone to Cotto.
Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
This would of been a fight of a decade . Shame it never happened
Re: Who would've won? Hatton or Cotto?
Tszyu was also winning until scored an uncounted knockdown with a body punch and got the most flagrant (not to mention unpunished) low blow I've ever seen, including Golota-Bowe for his troubles. After that he faded and Hatton got on top of him. If Tszyu had come out for the tweflth and lost the round 10/9 I'd still have had him winning by a point.lurkyshaka wrote:Tszyu went into the Hatton fight on the back of one of his better wins when he battered Sharmba Mitchell in far easier fashion than he'd managed in their first fight. You'd have been way off with your card then my friend.mrbassie wrote:

Tszyu went low a couple times, Hatton then repaid him with interest. Neither went low again.
Hatton's pace proved too much for Tszyu, Kostya landed some great right hands but couldn't keep the fight at his prefered range and got broken down.

I'm pretty sure at the time this was touted (2005 era), the perception on this forum was that Cotto (unbeaten at the time) was the rising star who was too good for Hatton.

Also Kostya's preparation was at best, stupid.
He made no time adjustments at all and later admitted he'd taken poor advice in that respect.
