Harry Greb's light heavyweight rank

Post by Othro »

When ranking all time light heavyweights I seldom see Greb's name mentioned but he beat some legends in that division .

Where do you rank Greb as a light heavyweight?

Many people can't get past the fact that Harry Greb was a middleweight despite his tremendous success when fighting light-heavyweights and heavyweights throughout his great career. I have seen one recent list which has American-born top-ten heavyweight rankings for each decade from the 1880s to the 1940s. In the rankings for the 1910s and the 1920s, a number of Greb's victims are included, but not Greb himself.

That same list has Jack Dempsey and Jack Johnson ranked no. 1 and no. 8 respectively for the decade of the 1910s. During that decade, Dempsey was a top fighter for barely two years while Johnson was the world heavyweight champion for over five years. Moreover, Harry Wills and Sam McVey also were top fighters for a far longer period of time than Dempsey during the same decade.

I've now moved him up two places ahead of Nicky Piper. He's at 93 in my personal rankings, which I like to update daily.

When you updated today where did you place your newly discovered Marvin Johnson? I'm sure he was placed far behind your number 1 Calzaghe.

Harry Greb poses a problem for everyone. He's very difficult to rank, and his ranking would undoubtedly fluctuate between the rankings...
