Shawn Porter vs Kell Brook

Post by diddy »

Should be a good one. Porter a pretty massive favorite at about 1-3. He's also got the fight in the states. I really like Brook. I think he's quality. But I dont see him being the one to derail this Porter train. Surely tho he'll do much, much better than Paulie. I just dont think Brook will be able to keep him at bay for 12 rounds.

Porter by stoppage somewhere in the second half of a really good fight.

Brook has to establish his jab and keep on his jab the entire fight. Has to pivot and jab when Porter rushes in. If Kell moves back in a straight line he's going to have problems. Porter is going to look to maul him and if Kell doesn't do a few very basic things, he doesn't stand as good of a chance at winning. Kell's jab is fantastic when he utilizes it correctly, but, he's going to have to do a few other things well as this will be his toughest test.

Anyone have a link to the video of Porter getting KOd in the amateurs. He still rushes in and provides the perfect opportunity to getting countered.

I would have to lean towards Porter, but think it goes the distance. The Porter that drew with Diaz may struggle to win, but Brook isn't a great defensive fighter and is not great on the inside. We will see. Porter is stronger, and I think that will be the key to the win...trapping Brook on the ropes and corners. Good fight though.

I don't care about the amateurs at this point.

This is the pros.

And I don't care about the first Diaz fight either. He's clearly improved a ton since and won the rematch easy. The Porter who hammered Alexander and Paulie is a different fighter.

I'm pretty sure Kell Brook hits harder than Paulie M and Alexander. We'll see what Porter is made of.

Also as we know Diaz gave Khan hell aswell. I think he was starting to cause Thurman some problems before the body shot aswell.

I actually think that stylistically, Thurman would be an easier fight for Kell than Porter is. Time will tell though.

He was stopped by Olympic silver medalist Emilio Correa Jr. in the 2007 Pan Am Games, but I cannot find footage. There is video of him being dropped by Dominic Wade in a fight he came back to win though and I posted a link to that above. In each case he was much smaller than his opponent and was fighting at 165 rather than 147.

Porter does rush in wildly at times and that could present opportunities for an accurate boxer with good counter-punching like Brook. Then again, Brook struggled with aggression before and he may find it difficult to cope with Porter's tenaciousness, especially as the fight goes on, so I think each fighter is capable of exploiting tendencies or weaknesses of the other. I believe it's more important for Brook to start well, as in some fights he's faded a bit in my view and I'm more confident of Porter's ability to come back from a deficit.

Good matchup between good fighters.

Agreed with above. I've been thinking about this match a lot today and I went from leaning more towards Porter to now Brook.hmm

Well the thing that stuck out to me is that Alexander and Malignaggi are not very hard punchers, and that allowed Porter to walk right through them. I don't think he can do the same with Brook. Not saying Porter will not have another method to win. If Brook is smart, he will move side to side and counter but I too have doubts that he can do that over the course of 12 rounds.

Uh, Burns stinks too.

And Crawford's talent is/was undeniable. Helps that he doesn't have to face someone like Porter in his division also.

I watched Brook's last fight and just can't see him getting the best of Porter. He does not appear to be a real hard puncher, has so-so defense, is a decent boxer, but will have trouble when fighting in close I think. Porter, although short, is a pretty solid big welter that looks like he really cuts to get there. Brook to me looks like he could make 140 without too much trouble.

I give Brook a lot of stick but bloody hell, no way! He's really a 154 guy boiling down to 147. He's a big welterweight! He'll be bigger than Porter on the night im sure. Certainly in height and what have you.

Not sure what makes people think Brook is any better than Alexander?

When the 2 were scheduled to fight Alexander was about a 2.5-1 favorite over Brook. And Alexander got smacked by Porter.

Certainly in height? Emm Kell Brook is a whopping 5'9. You make it sound like he's friggin Shaquille O'Neal. Porter looks and fights more like a light middleweight than Brook does. Christ Porter fought at middleweight in the amateurs. He's a stocky strong dude.

You'll see on the night that he's a big guy. 5'9 isnt massive obviously but porter looks about 5'5! He's stocky but he does look like a dwarf.
