It seems likely that lifeforms in the universe are going to form along similar patterns, as there are certain precursors that have to be present for life to form (as far as we can tell of course) - gravity that is not too crushing, the presence of liquid water, a climate which is not too violent in it's extremes, and to be close, but not too close to a star. Given those conditions, there will of course be variance, but the patterns are likely to be familiar.
It seems very arrogant to assume that intelligence is anything more than a natural byproduct of evolution, and therefore it will be present on any planet which is able to support life long enough to allow evolutionary forces to develop long enough,
With the vast distances between planets however, it's quite possible that lifeforms will simply never find one another.
If they had spent centuries developing inter-stellar travel what interest would they have in visiting a planet full of primitive lifeforms?

The next 20 years is going to be really exciting, you know big things are happening when the UK is building a space hub and some boffins managed to put a wi-fi hot spot on the moon the other month.
Of course, it's more than possible that we will soon have the technology to create beings that don't die of natural causes, but then that raises other questions. How do you stop them going mad with the boredom of living for 50,000 years? People get bored with even the variety of things on offer in a regular lifespan, so how do you cope with a lifetime 500 times longer?
One thing discussed has been sending non-organic lifeforms into space, effectively artifical entities, created from nanotechnology - perhaps in the end humans will become entirely redundant, and they will colonise the universe through proxy.
It's all going to get very strange, very quickly in the next 100 years, I think that life will be almost unrecognisable, at least for a certain class of people who have the money to enjoy the benefits of the latest nanotechnology and gene transformation. There will be people who are effectively superhuman, and enjoy much longer healthier lifespans.
Pretty soon, it's going to be cheaper and easier to have machines doing pretty much all the menial labour currently done by humans - at that point, everything is going to change drastically, even skilled labour may become redundant, as we have machines which are able to out-think humans too, even in creative fields. It cannot be long until we have artifical thought which is indistinguishable from the work of the human mind.
It's actually making my brain hurt thinking about this. Shame I probably won't live long enough to see any of it.
