Hearn 'Froch vs GGG is not HBO PPV'

Post by TopGun »

Still find it hard to believe what he said in a recent ifilm interview. For me I would but that tomorrow for £40. Yet he says HBO are more interested in Chavez fight. Give it a rest Eddie!

yeah but you're looking at it from the perspective of a dedicated boxing fan....who probably make up about 10% of the PPV audience. The argument is that Chavez has the ready made mexican fanbase while Golovkin lacks broad appeal as an unknown kazak. I think that just about holds water at the moment, but judging from the full arena on saturday and with his crown pleasing style and winning smile PPV status can only be a fight or two away.

Eddie is probably right it's not HBO or sky PPv, if froch faces Chavez and wins, golovkin faces cotto and wins then I reckon it would sell well

Eddie right GGG needs to beat Cotto or Ward for HBO to try and market it on HBO ppv it's a very hard sell since neither fighter is an American. Sky would show Froch vs a chef on PPV now.

GGG will smash Cotto up. Can see it being a one sided beating worse then the PAcman fight

Unfortunately hes right. Neither froch or GGG are ppv fighters in the states while chavez is. Not sure why it cannot be regular hbo and ppv in the uk though?

Eddie wants to whack Froch in with DeGale anyway. Easy fight to make, and he can promote it as another battle of Britain.

He doesn't care who is more deserving of a shot. Just what he can put spin on to make money.

Hearns is a bottom line kinda guy - and that's his bottom line... Froch v Chunky is the best fight for him, so it's no surprise that he'll talk other options down.

Froch isn't going near GGG and to be honest I don't blame him. Froch has earned the right to duck this fight, it would be the only fighter out there he has ever ducked in his whole career. At 37 with all he's accomplished, nobody can complain at that.

For what it's worth I think it's a fight Froch could win, but he'd have to win in a very dull jab, jab, hold manner. If he engages he'd get badly hurt, but with his reach and strength advantages he has the style to win.

Golovkin's brilliance hasn't turned him into a crossover star...yet. If GGG can get the Cotto fight, that seriously introduces him to the Latino audience and if he wins as expected, then maybe he's well on his way. PPV's between 2 Europeans is a hard enough sell, especially when one of them hasn't beaten an opponent with a significant profile in the US. Golovkin is superb, he can only beat what's in front of him. I'll be fascinated to see how they match him now. Money wise he's low reward for most of the big names out there.

Froch has what, 2 maybe 3 fights max left? He deserves to make as much cash as possible at this stage of his career, like him or not. That means Chavez is a must. I believe he would fight GGG if the money made sense.

Apparently in American prime-time Saturday night terms, his fight against Geale was a significant disappointment. Probably on account of him being Australian, whereas Stevens was American and they publicised it locally in NYC quite a lot.

• Gregorz Proksa (Sept. 1, 2012): 685,000

• Gabriel Rosado (Jan. 19, 2013): 813,000

• Matthew Macklin (June 29, 2013): 1.1 million

• Stevens (Nov. 2, 2013): 1.41 million

• Geale (July 26, 2014): 984,000

Froch vs Groves, which aired on a Saturday afternoon graveyard HBO slot - drew 830,000

Who does Carl want or is it about the pension plan? He's proved himself time and again, so if he is thinking about feathering his nest, good on him. It'd be a shame if his last fight was against JDG, though.

His eventual retirement will leave a pretty big gap in British boxing at world level.

I think people are understating Froch's chances, he's the proven man at 168, and as destructive as GGG is, that move up against a genuine hard nut at 168, could easily be a step too far. Even if he beats Cotto easily, Cotto is small at the weight, hell he wasn't even big at 154, people seem to forget he was a 140 lb fighter. He was big at 147, but not above that weight.

I'm pretty sure Froch would annihilate Cotto if they fought.

I agree with most of this but how is Froch the proven man at 168? No argument for him over Ward in my opinion.

It's proven he's better than everyone else except Ward, I'd say that's pretty much proven.

How many top level fighters at 168 has GGG beaten?

You said he's the proven man, not that he's a proven man. The first implies that he's the established ruler of the division.

edit: If you mean he's proven at 168 simply relative to GGG, I agree. I initially read it as a statement about his place relative to the entire division and not just one fighter.

I think you're being a bit pedantic. I think it was quite obvious that he meant that Froch was proven at a level higher than GGG is.

Yes I did. It seemed to me you were clarifying you agreed with him, but only if he meant what you were specifying he meamt. As if you were unsure that's what he was saying.

Edit. Sorry about that.

I think he may well also have in mind, that if Froch is near the end, he needs to step over him to leave the ring with the opponent - James DeGale can then take on the mantle.

No option for that with JCC, GGG or B&Q

I think Froch can do it, but only if he B&Qs it.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to comment?

I initially thought he meant that Froch was 'the man' of the whole division (I've been in many discussions about lineal titles lately so I took 'man' as 'top fighter'), not simply relative to GGG. I don't see the pedantry in distinguishing between someone being the top fighter in the division and being one of the top fighters in the division.
