who is britains greatest trainer ?

Post by johnnykayo »

just read jimmy tibbs book and good read it was too, britain have had some exellent trainers and churned out so many great champions over the years, who would you say was our best ? i can think of terry lawless, george francis, the gutteridge twins, jim wicks but in my opinion ive got to say eddie thomas has to be one of our best. he took howard winstone and ken buchanan to world champions but he also had so many other great fighters from the fight town of merthyr tydfil. colin jones, eddie avoth, dennis avoth, carl gizzi, danny mcalinden and many many more.

I don't think one trainer stands out well above the others, there is a lot of good trainers, if you go by records, i.e world champions, you have to go with Enzo Calzaghie, Brenden Ingle, Terry Lawless, at the moment Gallagher has a great record, but there are a lot of good trainers about, many under rated i.e Oliver Harrison, Dominic Ingle and Bob Shannon, the Tibbs have been going a long time and have great experience AND Tony Sims is doing great, Booth for me is over rated, but has produced Haye and Groves, you could go on all day, Fighters make trainers and trainers make fighters.

Not necessarily Britains' greatest trainer, but Britains' most overlooked trainer is/was Ronnie Rush. Not that many trainers can say the boast two world champions, with two very different styles of fighting, yet he never gets any mention.

I'd go with Ingle or Tibbs. Ingle because he worked with scraps and turned them into good pros and sometimes champions.

But yes Brian Hughes too as his fighters were always fit and well schooled.

Ingle - to take so many kids who hadn't even boxed before and turn them into professional champions is unbelievable really especially in an area that wasn't well known for producing boxing champs

x2. He has developed boxers from nothing. Johnny Nelson a prime example, the kid was not that talented but won a world title.

Is Brendan British? That's not a dig or a cheap shot BTW, I genuinely don't know. I've always assumed he was Irish but his lads were English.

yea just finished tibbes book and a exellent read and very fairly priced as it was only a tenner as most of em these days are well over priced, some over £20 ! but yea well reccomended for any fight fan,i know i say eddie thomas is one of our greats as the man done so much for the town in merthyr and was one of the first of the rescue team in the aberfan disaster, eddie was a lovely man and he owned a drift mine at the top of merthyr were all his fighters worked in the day and trained at his gym in the evening. a lot of people forget he was a former british and european welterweight champion,so knew the game through and through. brian hughes is defo one of our greats as is brendan ingle, brian has wrote some good books too :TU:
