Callum smith's power
Callum smith's power
Do you think it's possibly a little overrated at this stage? The reason I ask is that he recently went the full 10 rounds with Vladine biosse and I just saw that Andre Dirrell just blew him out in 5 rounds last night after not fighting for god knows how long. J'eon love also stopped him and I remember Grachev stopping him in 4 a few years back. Just wondering what people's take's are on it?
Re: Callum smith's power
1. Biosse fought just 20 days ago and was hit with a lot of shots - he had no business being in the ring again so soon.
2. The ref reckoned he'd taken too many and stopped it in the corner- he wasn't sparked out.
Also it was the exact same stoppage with J'Leon Love, with him in the corner and ref just dived in despite protests that he was ok.
In closing, there is no comparison to be made because they never knocked him out either - it was ref's.

Re: Callum smith's power
I agree it a bit much of an ask for Biosse to be in with someone of Dirrell's quality so soon after going 12 hard rounds with Smith but Andre was impressive and in his 3 fights since the DQ win over Abraham he's looked mean
Im not long up so cant think of a less camp word than mean

Dirrel is a top 5 super middle, at least!
Re: Callum smith's power
Oh i dont deny that but he has been out of action for awhile and he's also never really been a puncher per se either. Also J'eon love who flatters to deceive managed to get the stoppage over Biosse aswell.mickey1975 wrote:Dirrel is a top 5 super middle, at least!

Dirrell hurt Froch and floored Abraham, he can dig a bit when he lets his hands go (which isn't often enough).columbo wrote:Oh i don't deny that but he has been out of action for awhile and he's also never really been a puncher per se either. The Love stoppage was soft, he was just as badly hurt in the Smith fight.
I also have no idea why he fought so soon after the Smith fight, if anything it should raise question marks over Dirrell's and his team. I wonder how much notice Biosse had for this fight also
Re: Callum smith's power
Dirrell is much faster than Smith and that helped him overwhelm Biosse more easily. The shots were coming so quickly when Dirrell put them together at the end that Biosse had less time to respond and he was being hit more relative to the Smith fight, but I didn't sense that he found Dirrell's shots more damaging than Smith's.
As for Smith's power being overrated, it's tough for me to say because I'm not sure what the consensus is. I imagine that if he were a murderous puncher he would've stopped Biosse in a fashion more similar to the latter's fight with Grachev (fairly early and with knockdowns) or at least put him down before stopping him standing like Upshaw did, but I think there is a fair bit of evidence that his power is good. It's always important not to get too carried away before someone faces good opposition though.

so far (usual caveats apply), with Smith, it's at least as much the way he has picked his shots and put them together, the variation and selection, as it is about their pure power.
the steps up in levels will, of course, tell us a lot.

Yeah thats something ive been very impressed with, with him. His punch selection and variation has been very impressive. Even the likes of Froch and co dont put punches aswell together as he does.Counter-puncher wrote:so far (usual caveats apply), with Smith, it's at least as much the way he has picked his shots and put them together, the variation and selection, as it is about their pure power.

Re: Callum smith's power
Callum Smith has enough power to get him to world level. It's not his best asset by far. No way Vladine biosse could've been fully fit last night.

One other consideration is his age. He is only 24. He has good power but will probably get stronger.
Re: Callum smith's power
Callum smith is a good prospect not quite sure I believe the hype yet he hasn't fought anyone. Got to ask yourself why doesn't eddie match him and rocky fielding together??

Probably because he doesn't want either to get beat. Rocky shifts some amount of tickets for those Echo shows.BAP1 wrote:Callum smith is a good prospect not quite sure I believe the hype yet he hasn't fought anyone. Got to ask yourself why doesn't eddie match him and rocky fielding together??
Re: Callum smith's power
The only downside I can see with Smith is his serious lack of head movement. Its a Gallagher trait to just put your hands up and let your opponent stop punching rather than move out the way of them.

Joe was asked on Twitter the other night who the biggest puncher was in his gym and he said Hosea Burton
Re: Callum smith's power
Callum gets really good leverage and places his punches really well, he spars with people a full league above those he's boxing. His brother Paul has a horrible punch against men below his level. Well have to see how Callum's power holds when he's taken a few back.

Re: Callum smith's power
Hitting a bag is one thing and placing a hard punch on a moving target is much more difficult.

Some boxers wont always produce power until a little later in there careers, getting rounds under his belt id say is more important the power will never leave himrm1 wrote:Yet hosea hasn't got many ko's.Manchester Massive wrote:Joe was asked on Twitter the other night who the biggest puncher was in his gym and he said Hosea Burton
Re: Callum smith's power
He did hurt his hand in that last fight so he wasn't looking for a ko!

The lad has the frame of a cruiserweight!! He has great advantages over all his opponents!!
He has good power which is backed by great timing & size. I've been very impressed by the fashion of his stoppages as they ain't bulldozing under matched displays, they are concise & effortless in a manner that tells me he could do it all night long & what impresses me most is how calm he is
