Robin Reid - most underrated boxer ever?

Post by Kaaspeer »

We probably all agree that Calzaghe's 4 best wins are Kessler, Hopkins, Lacy and Bika. Those are indeed good wins. But people often overlook his win against Robin Reid and I honestly consider Robin Reid to be among the most underrated boxers ever.

1 - He defeated Sven Ottke. It doesn't take a great boxer to do that, but it takes a good boxer.
2 - He defeated an undefeated prime Brian Magee. Magee is a fairly solid boxer.
3 - He defeated a past-it, but still relatively tough Julio Cesar Vasquez.
4 - He gave Calzaghe a VERY hard and tough fight.

When Lacy was done with Reid, Reid was never the same again, but he was indeed a good boxer. He had two bad losses (Malinga and Branco), but hey, that happens to a lot of boxers...

Reid was not an alltime great, but he was a boxer with good skills and good power, Froch even said he was more hurt by Reid's punches than any other punches in his career.

The point is... Reid is Calzaghe's 5th best win. Better than old RJJ and old Eubank and better than Mario Veit.

Hello Kaaspeer,

I don't post on here too often and the amount of times a week I get to read is gradually decreasing due to lack of time in personal life.............. so apologies if this a joke and I just don't get it, but:

Are you serious?

This is not a joke. I'm very confident that Reid would beat some of the top guys at SMW today, like Degale, Groves, Abraham, Stieglitz, etc. He definitely counts as a good win.

Robin was a really good boxer and was too powerful for many below world level. He'd have done well today but wouldn't have been a long term champ. (Did you know he was a porn star?)

Besides Froch, Kessler, Ward and Dirrell, I would actually give Reid a good shot against any active SMW boxer, most would be easily destroyed.

Yeah, I know... Porn star, WTF... I hate that fact, it made me lose some respect for him as a person, but what matters is what's going on in the ring and he was very good there.

I don't think that's it, Reid was a very good fighter amateur and pro but he's someway short of being the most underated boxer ever.

The fact that you yourself rate a win over Bika higher than a win over Reid says that he Reid is not underrated.
Bika just is not and never was all that good, yet you rate Bika ahead of Robin.
Tough?
Oh hell yes, Bika is very tough but he's still not very good. He has never defeated a top class super-middle, matter of fact he's never even come close to doing so. He gave Ward and Calzaghe some tough rounds but was dominated by Bute on FNF, losing wide decisions all of them.

I personally would rate Reid ahead of Bika so if Bika is the measuring stick then, yes Robin is underrated but if being rated above or below Bika is up for debate that alone tells you Robin doesn't rate very high to begin with.

Reid is not the only person that beat Ottke but didn't get the decision, that's not even noteworthy.

Remember Reid's non-effort while giving away his title and undefeated record to 40-year-old Thulani Malinga?
Robin was in his prime at that point. How can anybody watch that performance and assume he would beat any world class super-middle today?

"THE most under-rated boxer ever"???????????????????

Never in a million years.

This topic is absurd.

I consider Bika a good boxer, just a bit better than Reid, although they're in the same league. Not elite, but just below it.

He was a good win.

But yeah, he is not the most underrated of all time, but he is very underrated, people talk like it means nothing to beat him.

Why does this matter? You don't respect porn stars as people? It's one of the most watched things in the world. It's obviously acceptable!

Yet, there are some boy-gropers/virgins who tell you that sex is bad so you think that it's a private thing and those who are expressive are somehow less than human. fornicate that.

I don't do porn, but I thank those that do. It taught me a few new moves and has added hours of entertainment to my life.

Isn't he the cat who started doing porn after boxing? Definitely not the most underrated boxer ever, hell not even of his era I'd imagine. Could be an underrated porn actor though idk.

Calzaghe barely trained for the fight and didn't spar a single round.

Reid won a 'world title' and is solid but not underrated

His girlfriend before the Ottke fight was my physical trainer at police training at Hutton. She seemed nice but doubt they are together now. He's definitely in the mix with Woodhall and Catley as slightly unsung champs. He was a bit lacking in drive following the Nardiello fight. If he'd had more stamina against Calzaghe he could have sprung an upset. Calzaghe was totally open to his overhand right that night.

Your soap box is giving me whiplash...

In one thread your talking about how evil having ring card girls is, and in this thread your defending porn as a champion of the human race. If you're worried about increases in rape, I'd be willing to bet porn would be a bigger contributing factor than ring card girls

A bit like people thinking Calzaghe stopping a near prime Richie Woodhall is meaningless too. They were good fighters.

I don't think anybody is saying Reid wasn't good.
He was nothing special either though.
