Froch on a possible Golovkin fight in Boxing News

Post by Cyclops »

In Boxing News on the shelves tomorrow (my little plug for them)

On the (obviously jokey if you watch the interview) comments he made about swerving Golovkin in the Groves build up:

"It was tongue in cheek back then... What I will say though is this guy can f*cking punch: he's dangerous and if he can be avoided we'll avoid him. I'll stand by that and I don't give a sh*t. But I'll fight anyone. I'll fight Golovkin, of course I would. At Middleweight he's dangerous but you don't know what he's going to be like at super middleweight do you... Having said that, with what I've seen lately, he looks like he can punch at super middle."

There's more but I won't write it all out. Kind of interesting. I've no doubt Carl would fight him, but the "if he can be avoided we'll avoid him" bit is a strange thing to say, at least in print.

Eddie Hearn in the same issue: "If the deal was right, Froch would have no problems fighting Golovkin at all."

I know people will say he's staying at middleweight but super middle is where he's headed, really. This is my dream fight for next year. GGG needs to keep knocking them over and he needs to start calling out Carl afterwards, making some noise and drumming it up. Has he mentioned Carl at all? It does seem to be Froch and Hearn who keep getting asked about Golovkin than the other way around.

If it makes monetary sense of course Froch would fight him. I’m not so sure Carl would be first choice for Golovkin at 168 though... I suppose that's another question.

He probably would be. Ward would have more chance of keeping out of the way, whilst Carl brings an exposed chin and lots of credibilty

I think suggesting an "exposed chin" is being rather hard on Froch, remember Groves can bang and Froch still finished strong, who's to say Groves doesn’t hit as hard as Golovkin? The difference being George hits bigger men.

Groves has never had a reputation as a banger (powerful but not lights out)...he hit Carl hard because he hit Carl clean. Golovkin is something else! I am a huge Groves fan by the way

Without diverging onto the 'does Golovkin really bang?' argument...I merely meant he wouldn't have to go looking for Carl and wouldn't get mugged out of the fight

And taking the piss out of the 168 division. When the hell are the WBA gonna strip this pudendum.

I believe the "we'll avoid him" bit is about not slugging it out with him but rather moving and boxing.

I would say Groves has always been known as a banger. The Degale fight the exception because he boxed off the back foot.

I with you. It takes a banger to stop men like Adamu and Anderson.

How can you say that about Anderson given the opposition he's faced? Perhaps you could say it takes someone who isn't a domestic journeyman to stop him.

The Adamu stoppage is suggestive of power though.

He still fights about once a year and the WBA have let people get away with significantly worse. I also think Rodriguez was about as proven as Groves was when he signed to fight Froch the first time, so in addition to being more active and being less of a diva, maybe Ward would be better off letting opponents have success against him so people think the opponents are better than they are.

I think it's a refreshing admission from Froch. He's saying that he respects Golovkin's power and ability, so if they do fight, he wants all the stage trimmings and lots of money.

I believe Froch would jump at the opportunity to fight GGG.
Why wouldn't he?
A smaller untested guy that brings big money.

Froch just playing the part to hopefully build it into something big. He prob sees GGG as his Jeff Lacy.

Ward has terrible legal problems plus the fact nobody wants to fight him! Why should he be stripped? Froch wouldn't dream of trying to avenge that loss. It's a thankless task for anyone in the division.

of course he should be stripped if he doesn't sort his shit out soon, 2 fights in 3 years and nothing on the horizon. His legal problems are of his own making, an arbitrator already ruled in Goosens favour. And nobody wants to fight him? Seriously? Ward is the only one who seems reluctant to get in the ring, looks a bit too comfortable in that commentator role to me. Maybe if Golovkin keeps building his name he'll be tempted out of retirement...or will he have to get Froch to do his dirty work for him again a la Bute?

I agree, but at the same time it is almost refreshing to see the WBA not have a million champions in this division. Froch is a worthy, active "ordinary" (sorry cannot think of a more appropriate word) champion, Ward is the Super World Champion. What I don't want to see is Ward "promoted" to Emertius status, Froch Super World an new "ordinary" champion and a interim champion - ala Brian Magee.

Froch was coming off a convincing defeat to Ward when he rolled the dice with Bute!

and? Ward refused to fight Bute because he hadn't 'earned it' and then proceeded to fight a drained dawson and Rodgriguez in the next three years.

Ward outclassed Froch on the night, it doesn't mean he gets credit for all Froch's subsequent wins. P4P no 2? Shit or get of the pot.
