It's a way some of these guys can ride into the sunset. No training needed, go down from the first couple punches landed and get a check. Bob Sapp perfected this when he ended his MMA career. Easy money, especially if you used to have a name of somekind.

01. Tomasz Adamek - Age (37) not so old but he has 52 fights in which he has been hit a lot especially the Klitschko fight.
02. Tony Thompson - Age (42) has 44 fights, 2 beatings from W. Klitschko took a beating from David Price in 2nd fight before knocking price out at 41 years old.
03. Antonio Tarver - Age (45) has no future in Heavyweight division, if he takes a fight for good money from serious puncher can get really hurt.
04. Fres Oquendo - Age (41) 45 fights, has no future in boxing at this age except to keep on getting close fights and hurt for no good reason but money.
05. Kali Meehan - Age (44) made some money in super 8 Tournament, no future in big fights, no need to get hurt at this age.
06. Brian Minto - Age (39) lots of though fights, has taken too many hard punches through out his career, will be nothing but step up for younger fighters.

There is better ways for these guys to make money (if they haven't enough) then by getting hurt in boxing.

? WTF? Thompson just beat a top 10 fighter in Solis . . following beating a highly touted prospect twice and giving the #1 challenger a reasonably competitive fight. No reason he should be on the list.

Exactly as far as I'm concerned Thompson is still the best American heavyweight.

Thompson did achived what nobody expected of him, but if he fights real heavy hitters for good money like Wilder, stivern, Arreola, povetkin or fury he can get really hurt,

He is better then most of american Heavyweights but he wont become a champion for sure, so why risk getting hurt, his getting older not younger

I am pretty much in agreement in regard to Francois Botha, Hashim Rahman (he looked awful against Alexander Povetkin), Danny Williams (please just stop). And with Tomasz Adamek and James Toney with both of them being just too small to be Heavyweights.

As for Tony Thompson. I am not sure on. Yes he beat David Price TWICE when Price should not have been let anywhere near to help get him some good pay days. But he is could be a good test for the likes of Bryant Jennings and Deontay Wilder if they want to mix it at World level.

He already fought one of the division's then perceived to be heaviest hitters in David Price, and he didn't get hurt, and did the hurting. Povetkin and Fury aren't really power punchers anyway, and Wilder is just a dark-skinned, American David Price.

Plus, Thompson has only been stopped twice, both times by Wlad. There's fighters out there like Maskaev who go to sleep every time they step into the ring. In fact, I was already worried about Maskaev's health several years ago.

In conclusion, a fighter doesn't need to retire if he's still notching virtually career-best wins, not getting stopped or taking too much punishment, hasn't taken a significant accumulation of punishment throughout his career, is still capable of making substantial sums of money, and don't have a ton of money saved-up in comparison to what he's currently making on a per-fight basis.

The notion that older guys are more likely to get hurt isn't something I see as a reality. Everyone who walks into the ring is taking a risk, I don't see that Tony's is any greater & he's a top guy still who wins fights. While Tony probably isn't likely to become champion he is a top ten & hell maybe a top 5 HW. I don't think I'd say that about anyone else on the list you made so I'd agree with the others Tony is one of the 40+ guys I wouldn't be in favor of quitting & I'm nearly always wanting 40+ year old fighters retiring.

These fighters fight so seldom it almost doesn't matter. How they feel and cat scan results would answer what the rest of us don't know.

Oquendo and Thompson aren't really getting beaten up, so perhaps they have a couple fights left. Adamek got beat up a bit last time. The rest are going nowhere fast.

Well, he must be better than most active HWs since he beat one of the heralded British towers of mediocrity and also a former Olympic champion and highly ranked contender.

This group of HWs is really sad. Thompson at his best was nothing more than a middling contender and now he beats two pillars of the division and could probably beat several other highly regarded pretenders. There is no reason for him to retire as long as there are over-hyped clowns to expose.

Any news on the supposed return of Riddick Bowe?
There were links on Boxrec a couple of weeks ago touting him as lined up for a bout on the Jeff Lacy undercard on 20th Sept?
I hope this was incorrect or he's decided against it.

There are lots of guys who should retire, give it up, etc.. But that doesn't just hold true to the older men who have been around forever. There are plenty of 2-17 tomato cans ( and in every division ) who shouldn't be in there either.

Nine months on and:

01: Adamek hasn't fought since, but will have a fairwell fight against Saleta.

02: Tony Thompson beat former top contender Solis, proving himself as the top gatekeeper of the division. #7 in the world.

03: Antonio Tarver beat Johnathan Banks via 7th round KO, world ranked.

04: Fres Oquendo inactive since his Chagaev loss, but has recently (through ligitation) secured another shot at the WBA regular title in the near future.

05: Kali Meehan accounted for Shane Cameron in a big domestic affair, being talked about as an opponent for Parker.

06: Brian Minto had an unsuccessful tilt at the NZ Super 8 cruiserweight tournament - was by most accounts robbed. Will fight on.

He clearly showed that he’s better than most active HWs but beating one of the UK towers of mediocrity twice and the obese former Cuban great really only shows the dreadful nature of the current HW. Jennings and Wilder have both proven more in the past year and represent the best of the US hopefuls.

I agree with 4/6. TT is still effective with his 4 wins over Price and Solis. Oquendo fights so seldom that I don't see what he's risking. His last fight against Chagaev, shows he's still effective in his usually very unexciting way.

Fres has always been pretty good at not taking a beating, and despite the grief people seem to give him, he hasn’t lost a fight decisively since he was stopped by Ruiz over 10 years ago. All his losses since then have been close decisions, and most of them he could have easily gotten the decision.

I'm pretty sure Maskaev is retired. Hopefully Harrison will remain retired.

Adamek is semi-retired, but will have one farewell fight in Poland later this year.

Tarver, Meehan, Rahman, Williams, Oquendo and Sprott all should retire.

Danny williams is someone that needs to retire.

Oquendo gave chagaev fits last time out in a title fight.

I don't agree with Meehan needing to retire.

Aside from not slurring his words or showing other pronounced signs of being punchy like some of the others mentioned, he looked fine in winning both the Super 8 (he made around $215k) and his bout with Cameron (around $100k), and he has what I consider a realistic chance of landing a big domestic fight with Parker. He's not taking loads of punishment, he's winning, he's making solid money by most standards, and he seems to have a good chance of earning well in the future, so I don't think he should be on this list yet.
