What exactly does it mean to "stay in the pocket" in boxing?

this is a newish phrase to me ,but it just means being in close punching range

Staing inside the punching range, comes from NFL I think

It means when you are in punching range of the opponent but at an angle where they will find it difficult to land on you without being countered

Mayweather against Phillip N'dou is the first time I heard a commentator talk about a fighter fighting "In the pocket". It's also a great example of it.
