Lodge Boys Documentary

What did everyone think of the documentary on the Fitzroy Lodge ABC. Personally, I thought it was very good. I particularly liked the first part where they highlighted the work they do with troubled youths and also with the schools. I am certainly considering referencing that a discussion with my students studying both exercise psychology and adolescent psychology.

What I didn't like about the documentary was I felt there should have been more about the background to the club. There needed more setting the scene. Because of the lack of captions explaining what was happening it was a little unclear what the show at the end was for and those not familiar with the gym (like me) it was unclear when they were shooting at the club or in another club.

However, overall I thought it was a very strong documentary, particularly the first 30 minutes.

i see it last night ,brought back some memories as i boxed with many on the show mark reigate the head coach was my sparring partner and i fought at the lodge on a show with nigel travis and eddie lam . it was great to see the good it does to some of the kids keeping them on the straight and narrow . i wondered if david haye would be on it as he's a lodge boy then i remembered the last time i had a cup of tea with mick carney he wasn't to keen on haye shall we say . i didn't know mick carney like the other lads did but he was good man who didn't take any crap , i remember i was at the lodge to fight a guy from repton and he looked massive next to me and mick said to me "do you think you can stop him" i said yes and he gave us 6oz reyes gloves ,punchers gloves

Good concept, but was a bit disjointed and didn't quite flow right for me. I think the point is, there are so many stories and individuals from the club that cutting a 50 minute piece on it must have been hard.

Style wise it looked ok, wasn't sure about the intro and some of the montages and music choices. Content wise there could have been a bit more depth and detail but I think they wanted to squeeze a lot in.

Great to see Mick Carney get the recognition for all of his work.

Yeah, I kind of got it... although wasn't sure where Nigel Travis' gym was based at first. Only got it thanks to the accent change of him and his fighters and there was little information about how Earlsfield ABC is linked to Fitzroy.

x2 - Enjoyed it but felt they could have made it a two parter. First part on history and its work with disadvantaged youths. I really enjoyed it when they had the Lawyer, the Actor speak about the club.

Part 2 - a seperate programme should have been about the meeting with Travis' club.

Looking back it only seemed to cover that period, so many other great fighters and trainers contributed much to the club that had no mention. Mick disliked Adam Booth not David although they had a fallout Mick was still tight with David's family so it was odd that there was no mention of David.

Mick was a true dapper gent, would speak volumes just by a look and shake of his head.

Seen it on catch up TV now and I thought it was a fabulous show. I trained there in 93-95 and recognised a few of those faces and only now can I sit back and appreciate what a great opportunity I let slip through my fingers at that club. I boxed competitively but not for the Lodge and now being 40 that is not something I can change and that programme made me sad about that.

Great club and characters.

I think it was basically an indulgence by ed Robinson, a ''lodge boy' himself - those in the documentary were his contemporaries. I understand it, but it really only focused on a couple of 'lodge boys' - basically his mates. It was kind of his thanks to the club by having the spotlight on his friends for a bit.

Showing that stuff at earlsfield was confusing to the viewer, unless they really understood that carney 's community is a separate charity (but more confusingly is that it is run by the secretary of Fitzroy lodge). Looks like they are doing some great work though.

Ed says on his twitter profile 'tell me something I don't know' - well I was hoping this documentary would - not enough on mick carneys history, other ex boxers etc. making a documentary is hard to do, and I think obviously ed and others in the boxing department at sky have many jobs to do (reporter, producer etc) so it is tough. A good effort , especially as it's hard to such a big topic justice in 45 mins.

I remember the kids training when I was there but cannot remember Haye even though he would have been there at the same time as me, frustrating as I would love to tell people I knew him

i see mick a few months before he died and he wasn't very complementary about haye he said david hadn't been in the gym since he left to go pro , he told me a story about how haye was sent to the england set up and he was found hiding behind a tree when he should of been running ,

Haye boxed for broad street (just in name - don't think he even trained there) when he got 'kicked out' of the lodge.

Booth had already got to training haye first meeting him at Fitzroy after becoming a sports masseuse there on the reccomendation of Gary Logan or so the story goes....

No one is bigger than the gym is phrase I've heard before and I think it was in relation to the haye situation, basically he wasn't training properly and had booth pretty much working with him exclusively so he ended up getting the boot. Not sure if that is entirely what happened but only what I've read before.

I think there is probably a feeling of dissapointment towards haye from some 'lodge boys' because he hasn't given back to the club. But it's his choice at the end of the day.

I used to hide behind a tree when we had to do cross country.
