earnie shavers at 69 v 26 year old aussie
Seeing big earnie so tough and big at 69 in this month's boxing monthly magazine reminds me of a mythical matchup discussed on these pages a few years ago where the 26 year old goodnighturineiee said "I dont think I'd have too many problems with a 60 something shavers"........discuss

my assumption was that GI meant Shavers couldn't live with him on a spelling and grammar test. that was it, surely?

His grammar wasn't all that. Horrendous over use of the comma.
Wasn't GI a doorman? Probably quite a big lad that could handle himself. I believe Earnie worked the doors, too.
I dunno, I've never seen any near-seventy year olds fight - well, not any near-seventy ex-Heavyweight contenders anyway.

well, so he said. FWIW. and he definitely wasn't a big guy, even by his own admission.Lenny Cravats wrote:His grammar wasn't all that. Horrendous over use of the comma.

Age is the one enemy that brings down everyone, no matter how great they once were.
That being said, never underestimate how physically pathetic the average person is. Youth alone is never really an advantage over skill, physical attributes and burning desire.

A peak Kenny Rainford, who was a average UK heavyweight said in this month's Boxing Monthly that at 50 Shavers still hit really hard in sparring because he always fought flat-footed and really dug his toes into the canvas. I would imagine even at his advanced age he could slot one home against an untrained youth!

I'd wager Danny Hodge would still be kicking ass and taking names even at his advanced age.

When a 55 year old Earnie Shavers launched his comeback in the mid-90s Jimmy Thunder, who had been sparring with him, expressed awe at his punch power.
I don't know about 70 year old heavyweights, but all the 'blokes' I've seen fight over the years, in various clubs and streets in the north and south of England, no matter how big their arms were, no matter how ferocious their scowl was, all shared the exact same traits. They punched very wide, without form, and were overcome by fatigue around the 30-45 second mark.

He posted some pics on the off topic forum. He looked like Yoda.

I will say with all honesty, that I would not fear too many 69 year old men.
But I would NEVER want to take a punch from a 69 year old Shavers.I don't know
if he still has that power, but I would not want to find out.

Didn't he leave over people calling him a hunchback tomasino?
Or was it the grammur counterpuncher?
Either way what a sheila for leaving like a dunny rat leaving the sinking ship

I can't remember why or when he left. He knew his boxing but seemed somewhat...troubled.
