Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Over the last year I've read the criticisms of Jim Watt's scoring, and while on a very rare occasion I thought he might have got it wrong, I was generally supportive. I watched the Brook fight and had it 7 rounds to Brook, 3 to Porter and 2 even. Score therefore was 117- 113.
At the mid point I listened to Jim and his co commentator and was starting to think I'd taken a stroke or something. They were so completely off the mark it was incredible. I can't explain how they were seeing the fight. Over the first 6 rounds Porter swung about like a novice and I saw him land 2 left hooks cleanly and NOTHING else. Brrok was scoring sharp powerful jabs and the occasional clean right cross which twice wobbled Porter.
Jim has to take a look at himself. He has to take another look at the fight and consider who was scoring the clean shots. I like him, but there's something wrong there.

They were loving Brooks work on Showtime.
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Jim Watt is shite. Repeats himself over and over says same phrases every single fight and generally talks too much.
However, I think Porter won the first five rounds easy, Kell hardly threw anything at all. Didn't see him even try a combination for first few rounds.
I will watch fight again when am not so tired but think it was pretty close and thought porter had won it last night although I was struggling to stay awake to be honest.
Well done Brook anyway looking forward to his next fight.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Both commentators were so negative - I thought I was watching a different fight to them
All Porter did was come forward without any real accuracy - Kell was more pinpoint
Congrats Kell Brook you deserved it

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I was able to see where Watt was coming from,Brook was landing the cleaner shots but Jim was right in assuming that Kell would have to start throwing more combinations rather than single shots to get the W
Granted Brook got the nod but it was closer than the wide judges score and i was surprised to hear Brook take it but im not saying it was a robbery as most people had Brook winning but i thought Brook was gonna suffer for his lack of combination punching
I had it 114-114,some tough rounds to score but im delighted Brook got it as he was clearly the superior boxer,i was just worried about his workrate but thankfully he got the jobdone

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I thought exactly the same. Really weird as Sky commentary normally goes out of its way to praise the British fighter, it felt like Halling & Watt made their mind up beforehand that Porter would dominate so that's how they called it.rossij8 wrote:Both commentators were so negative - I thought I was watching a different fight to them

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Perhaps they'd been briefed to remain objective. I watched the Showtime coverage so didn't hear Jim and his co-commentator but in the past they have been criticized for showing bias. If you were rooting for one of the fighters it will have been entertaining but for a neutral it was a drab affair. I don't see the argument for scoring the fight to Porter though.rossij8 wrote:Both commentators were so negative - I thought I was watching a different fight to them

It's always the same with Watt, makes his mind up before and then does all he can to call the fight that way.Boxerbeetle123 wrote:I thought exactly the same. Really needs a Co commentator who would call him out on his shit.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I've never liked him as a commentator. He talks garbage.
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I don't know how many times I have to ask.
Jim Watt - Please retire or Sky please dump the man.
He picks one thing in a fight and then that's all he sees, such a blinkered commentator the guy is borderline senile I think.
Way, way, way past his sell by date, a piss poor boxing commentator.
What was he watching last night, I don't know, but seeing his piss poor commentary again ruin a big fight for me it's just one too many this time. I've had enough. Sky PLEASE get rid of this man.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Why not just get briefed to call the fight? It's bizarre, Brook was the only one actually boxing. Porter showed himself to be crude as they come and was just winging in, but they wouldn't criticise him whatsoever.Sklar wrote: Perhaps they'd been briefed to remain objective. Watt scored it for Porter then tried to climb down a bit at the end when he realised pretty much everyone had seen the fight differently, in particular the Porter fans who were walking out before the result was announced!

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I said on the spoiler thread. Showtime Farhood scored it for Brook and almost every minute break was a Brook highlight. Also al lot of the commentary was praising Brooks clean punches landing.
They quickly cobbled together a Porter action montage for between the 11/12th.

I think that was the moment Nick Halling realised they'd dropped the ball pretty badlyTheCobra wrote:Why not just get briefed to call the fight? It's bizarre, Brook was the only one actually boxing. Yep, I turned over to an American stream and what a difference, their honesty actually surprised me. Its about time Sky had a clear out get some fresher faces like Moore, Smith and Barker. As for Amir Khan in the studio unbelievable (lucky he can box).
We like Ed Robinson he stays.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Some of the criticisms here of Jim Watt make it sound like he was lop-sided in favour of Porter. He wasn't. He had it close for Porter at the end, he gave Kell heaps of praise in the second half of the fight, where Kell did his best work. He did stress the point that in close rounds, the home fighter may get the nod due to coming forward a lot, which is fair enough.
Some people here are just cherry picking random bits of his commentary performance to underscore their dislike of Jim and there's a lot of being wise after the event. Unlike folk who can post on a forum knowing the result and having listened to commentary, Jim has to sit there with no commentary and call it as he sees it. It's not an easy thing to do. Why on earth would he do it any other way than simply as he sees it ?

I had it a draw but Brook deserved it judging by most peoples scores so i was delighted but even though he was by far the better technician and Porter was as crude as Bika was the previuos fight,i still thought Brook was indanger of being outmuscled by the inferior boxer,i didnt think he was throwing enough "punches in bunches" as they say and didnt throw enough right hands despite having success on the few occassions he did
It was close, messy and ugly but the right man won,why does anyone giva an eff if Watt's scorecard was 2 rounds out from most people,Watt's seen a lot of Brook over the years and maybe like myself thought Brook was fighting within himself and was wanting him to up it a little

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
To be fair, I think most people were pretty scathing about him prior to this particular commentary. Its time to freshen it up.
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
The problem wasn't with his scorecard, it was with the fact that he was talking like Brook was out of his depth for the first half of the fight, when he clearly wasn't. It was competitive through the first 8. Even with Brook down at that point it was obvious that he had been having plenty of success while Watt continued to blather on like the pressure from Porter was far too much and Brook couldn't handle it. Even if Brook had lost that fight it was obvious they were two dangerous fighters with world class assets. Kell's timing was quality last night, had forceful jabs to keep Porter honest and some really heavy read right hands. To hear Watt go on it was like Brook didn't land a shot until the 8th, when the reality is that Brook had been landing the quality shots all night. Its not like the fight swung dramatically, it was just that Porter started to fade giving Brook more chances to land those heavy blows.
I think the disappointing thing about that type of commentary is its not just Brook that is let down by it, its Porter as well.... I thought in those last 3 rounds Porter made some great adjustments to try and keep himself in the fight and give himself a shot at stealing the odd round in the final 3rd. Trying to sit back a bit more and pick his spots to get his work done knowing he couldn't just keep rushing in, due to paying too high a price when he did. He showed a lot of tenacity and determination, because there's no doubt he was struggling late on.

I thought Halling tried to disagree with him a few times, but quite subtly.

Porter was shocked at the Parris scores, 'WTF?' he said. Must have been gutted at the Americans'. I thought Watt was saying was what you'd expect over there. Porter to get it, for being the Champ, at home and more aggressive. Didn't think it was outrageous what he was saying.

I dont mind Darkie and McCrory's a smashing fella but he never says anything as a pundit that makes you think, just states the obvious more often than not and he's probably worse at commentating than puditryCiganoBoxer wrote:Jim Watt has lost the plot a long time ago , need to bring back Darkie an Glenn in my opinion
On a sidenote who was the blonde lass who presented Buncy's Boxing Hour last week??
She couldnt pronounce anyones name
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
The annoying thing is that Sky have two very capable people in Ed Robinson and Spencer Oliver (or even Jamie Moore) who could make a great commentary pairing.
