Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I was with Jim and his scoring, unfortunately, when you are trying to score the fight, because it was in porters back yard and because of the difficulties in accumulating points in usa the trend is to go with the local fighter when the rounds are close, I think this is what jim watt did. I had the fighters level at the end, I will admit to giving the close rounds to porter, simply due to the fight being in America. I suggest this is not correct practice but unfortunately its reality. The fact I had the fight level probably meant that had the fight been in Uk then I would have had Kell winning by about 3 or 4 rounds. perhaps 117-113 was realistic. anyone agree with my philosophy?
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I get the logic behind it and I think we all score fights with a bit of bias even when we don't know we're doing it and I think its normal to do that thing where you are trying to 'predict' how the judges might be seeing it. That said, I think the difference for me between your attitude and Watts is that he doesn't see it like that and it was more how he was calling the fight that irked me rather than his actual card. He wasn't just giving Porter the close rounds or admiring his style more, it was more like that he was talking like Brook wasn't doing anything, but he had success throughout the fight, even in the rounds he was losing he was landing clean and hard.rhino222 wrote:I was with Jim and his scoring, unfortunately, when you are trying to score the fight, because it was in porters back yard and because of the difficulties in accumulating points in usa the trend is to go with the local fighter when the rounds are close, I think this is what jim watt did. thought jim had it right tbh.
porter's work weren't pretty.
but brook weren't doing enough himself.
not all about the odd clean punch and grabbing on.

So can someone talk me through how Jim reacted when the result came in? Did he cry robbery or did he try to cover himself prior to the announcement by doing the old 'It's a question of do you give it to the busier man or the more accurate'?
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
Watt hasn't a clue. All he keeps going on about is who is "looking the boss" meaning the one that is coming forward. He has no concept of quality of work or how to score or judge a fight. Last night he was ridiculous and he was just as bad in the Froch v Groves 2 fight.
For an ex world champion you'd expect a lot, lot better.

It was a fairly clear victory for Brook. Don't know how anyone scored a draw.
Very scrappy ineffective work by Porter

Watt wasn't too bad last night.
Halling is absolutely atrocious though. He doesn't call the fight, he just hypes the house fighter. It's like Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross.
If Brook gets caught with a shot, they tell the audience how well he's took it.
Break the bank for Darke and give him boxing/football duties and rotate the likes of Smigga, Mooresy and Froch.

Talking about Jim Ross he did a really solid job on his boxing commentary slot a few weeks back (Juarez/Alvarado).Chris W 1982 wrote:Watt wasn't too bad last night.

Porter was a 2/5 favourite with bet 365 in play just after the final bell do result certainly wasn't cut and dried. I backed Brook and wasn't particularly confident at the end. Watt is a loose cannon mind.

Watt can be annoying, but in terms of quality over the likes of Oliver ( master of the bleeding obvious ) Nelson, Robinson and co he is light-years ahead I'm afraid.
Which is bad news, as a Jim must be punchdrunk after the 1000's of fights he's commentated by now.
Sky should try some new blood, Burns, Groves, Haye ??

I have enjoyed him being on there actually, good to have an active fighter of that level giving his view things. Not sure about his attire thoughhandsofstone wrote:Anyone else been loving Peter McDonagh on Allegedly??

Showtime's commentating is usually damn good.
I remember when they described Andre Ward as a 'Billy goat' whom was lucky not to be DQ'd against Kessler.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I had it 3 rounds to brook too
A real throwback top top quality matchup in boxing hottest division
Would love to see a rematch. This fight is just a level below the honeyghan and John h stracey wins abroad.
Watt and halling are pleasent entertaining voices but woeful scoring and calling of the early rounds.porter is one of ny favourite fighters based on his unique combination of fast hands feet, tyson like build and skillful defense and power, but bullying ie pushing around, a foe does not equate to scoring shots.porters early work that watt and galling were so impressed by consisted of rabbit punches to the head and body shot in the clinches.
Porter is a fantastic talent he would crush khan, bradley and Marquez.after 6 rounds I had it 3-2-1 that's how close it was.
Khans comments that brook lost were a joke.
What a division!!
Despite everything I regard watt as a national boxing treasure it's just he should be part of a three man team so he doesnt get carried away.
Watts only crime used to be talking over show ring entrances.

As they say (the youth?!) "this"!rossij8 wrote:Both commentators were so negative - I thought I was watching a different fight to them

Congrats Kell Brook you deserved it
I can't bear to watch without a commentary first time round but often re-watch, sometimes rounds again and again, with it off. Or I just learn to ignore it. If Watt and AppHalling are Sky's A Team, god help them. They are reliably awful. Always so doom laden and one way. And Watt really has become a one dimensional bore who says the same things again and again - when he's against you (Froch in No.1 for example) you stink and are amateurish and ineffective. When you're in favour (Froch in No.2) you are fantastic and invincible, even if you fight the same way.
With their commentary and then the wide scores, and it being in the US I thought Kell had/would lose. But I can't see how Porter won more than one round, if generous, from the 5th on. Lunging in, wide sweeps many hitting shoulders and back, ineffective, flailing head, punching after the 'break' and never seeming to trouble Brook excepting for, maybe one sneaky left. Difficult and awkward, almost a deliberate and 'educated crudeness', but not effective.
Brook was more sparing, did less actual work maybe, but the work was cleaner, more effective and deserved the points and the rounds. And the win. Fantastic result for him and let's hope he can cash in on it to see his future secure.

Not having that.mugabi wrote:

Bradley is better in virtually every department and would win by wide decision
Marquez of old would wipe the floor with him, Porters only chance is if JMM is well past his best
And i'd even fancy Khan, if he can defend as well as Brook did tonight, Kell never took too many clean shots tonight and if Khan could keep him off as well, he'd beat porter. (big IF of course)
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I found myself arguing with Watt , but sort of agreeing at the same time , come of his comments got me so angry when i was shouting bullshit , what fight are you watching , the missis actually came in and said who you talking too .
It was'nt so much that he was wrong in his assesmant that , to win a world title you generally have to , go and take it , and Kell was being a little too much punch and hold , .. Where i found it annoying was he did'nt give Kell enough credit for catching him , and tying him up , and he gave Porter too much credit , for bad boxing ,, He would talk about how superb Porter was to slip and come in hard with two hands , and press the fight ,, and give Porter, a lot of credit , But he did'nt critisize , Porter for coming in wild , and smothering his own work , not allowing himself room to land clean shots ,
He also never gave Kell the credit for when needing to , allowing Porter to smother himself , , at the end of the day , i really deep down thought Brook should get it on cleaner punches , but did'nt think he would get it , with the yanks tending to like and favor agression .
All in all a excellent result for Brook . although , Like i said , i was actually suprised he got it , . I don't know if anyone else noticed though , and it did raise my eybrows , and that was.
Oscar getting excited on a couple of occasions when Kell landed a hard shot on Porter , , made me wonder does he have options on Kell ,, and maybee wants some of the 70-80000 crowd it may draw with Khan

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I don't think Jim Watt was to wide of the mark in his scoring.
I scored it twice, once at the time and on a repeat viewing, and to be honest, Brook did well to get the verdict. I had it a draw first time, and Porter by two the second. Both times I had it 5-1 to Porter after 6. Porters workrate seemed a lot higher throughout, not sure if it really was. The body shots appeared to be landing fairly often. Head shots landing cleaner from Brook obviously, but v intermittent. Is there a link to punch stats anywhere?
Where Watt is very weak is that he picks a narrative for a fight early on and tend to stick to it, no matter what is happening on front of his eyes.I think Spencer Oliver or Jamie Moore would be fresher and more technically insightful. I agree his time has come to move over to a younger perspective.

Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
It comes down to how you score a round doesn't it. I saw Porter coming forward winging punches with NONE landing and Brook scoring regularly with firm sharp jabs and the occasional right hand which troubled Porter.
Re: Absolutely stunned - Jim Watt
I thought Brook won (by a round) and deserved it.
However I didn't expect him to get the decision.
Jim Watt seemed to be scoring it from a US perspective - that is how an american judge ringside would be scoring rather than being objective and just scoring it as he sees it. He would normally favour the cleaner work.
This was evident when he was getting worried about Brook holding and pretty non plus about the head work of Porter.
I thought Kell could have thrown more and used his footwork a bit better when Porter came rushing in all the time.
However, great win for Kell. Very difficult to look good in a fight like that.
I would like to get Paulie malinaggi on the mike. Intelligent guy. And I agree - bring back Ian Darke!

However I suspect that I would get narked with whoever is commentating eventually. I think there's an element of familiarity breeding contempt. Halling is atrocious though, but I do remember Darke getting right on my tits in the past too. I wish at times they'd just let the action happen rather than rambling pish over the top of every second of the fight, we have eyes.
I've always liked Alex Arthur's analysis of fights, as long as they can still fit him in the chair these days he's got a decent approach. On a side note, I thought Gary Lockett and Danny Flexen were excellent in the studio on BN on Saturday night, some excellent insights and pretty entertaining too.
