Several websites have info that pro boxer Vincent Cerdan was the
brother of Marcel, born 1906. A Cerdan feature on the pages
of Federation Francaise de Boxe tells how brother Vincent left his
home in Buenos Aires to assist Marcel before the Zale- fight.
In the record of Vincent Cerdan, his two last fights (1930 and 1933)
were held in Argentina,( Buenos Aires and Santa Fe)
He had one recorded fight in Casablanca (1924)
however he was sometimes presented as an Algerian.
He quit boxing in 1933 the year before Marcel's debut.
Anyone who knows more?
Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
can't help you further sorry, but I know he had a few boxers in the family and he, Marcel, was a good Footballer too. read it somewhere, don't ask me where now, Cerdan got a lot of press. It might have been a Ring Magazine feature I can't say, but I do remember reading about a few fighters in the family.
I have an interest in Cerdan, as my Grandfather the feared Scot Bert Gilroy fought him in 1947. not too many people know of Bert's career in detail, but he is the most cheated athlete in British sporting history.
I remember Bert talking about having to make weight for the Cerdan fight in less than two weeks, and when he got to London Cerdan's camp demanded more... until just 3 days ago the only report I had of the 'weight' issue was a reflective piece by the late great British Boxing writer Ron Olver whom in a 1983 feature on Bert stated with regard to the Gilroy, Cerdan fight; " how he (Gilroy), made the weight we shall never know?"
well 3 days ago I came across a few reports one of which confirms Gilroy's statement about his arrival in London and demands being placed on him to cut' a few more pounds - Evening Telegraph Feb 11, 1947...
already trying to cut weight for a week & a half Bert goes on a 48 hour NO intake what so ever, including water for the fight.
the great Cerdan and the only fighter DEMANDED to cut weight was the Feared & Cheated Scot's middle & light-heavyweight Bert Gilroy. But then again that's how his whole career went, unbelievable what was done to him through the years, criminal really.

Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
Yes he was Cerdan's brother.
Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
You mean Bert Gilroy should have been allowed to face Cerdan (who was two years older than Gilroy and a natural WW to boot) with a weight advantage of 15 pounds and not 12? I realize he was your grandpa but get real.
Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
OH klompton we all know you are smarter than that,
we also know you twist what's being said to your favour.
NO, NOT 3 pounds more to favour Gilroy, but you already knew that's not what's being said.
he was already cutting weight on short notice (2 weeks), then DEMANDED to keep going and cut more, just 2 days before fight time. well now we have the Report validating this.
this weakens ANYBODY, and we talk about fighters being effected by having to make weight all the time, you know fine well that's what's being said here!!!
always Considered when discussing EVERY OTHER Fighter, but not Gilroy eh Klompton...

Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
Whatever Jimmy, was he supposed to be allowed to outweigh Cerdan by a ridiculous amount?? There is nothing you can say to justify your argument. It doesnt matter if he was cutting weight on short notice. If it was that big a handicap (and he had been fighting at that weight for a long time) then he should have turned the fight down. Otherwise he took his chances, weighed the positives and negatives and lost. Anything else is just an excuse. But to come on here and complain that Gilroy was "forced to make weight" when he already outweighed Cerdan by 12 pounds on fight night and that he shouldnt have been forced to lose weight for Cerdan is ridiculous. You might as well be arguing that he should have been allowed to fight Cerdan with a horseshoe in each glove. Yeah cutting weight effects a performance but Gilroy had been fighting at that weight for some time and you know what else effects a performance? Having to fight a guy who is a weight division or two above you. Thats kind of a handicap.
Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
see you can't help yourself can you klompton.
cutting weight on short notice weakens, yes it does, your right, you must hate the fact that 'even' you can't deny that.
but he wasn't weighing 173 before the fight was he? he was over 180 prior, but you also know this to be true otherwise he wouldn't have had to cut any weight would he and there would have been no mention of such matters in any reports?
you always purposely swerve from what's been said and what the Actual Reports are stating!"
the love you have for me is both unwarranted and flattering, and I don't really understand it... but you only show more of your arrogance when you negate good people by repeatedly "Ignore" not only what their saying, but actually reports themselves.
you are a real beauty klomp, and you have done this to FAR TO MANY Posters for years now. hard to understand the kind of person you really are.
But thanks for the Love.
Newspaper Clippings, TOP Papers, Writers, Commenters and Historians that were actually there don't matter in Klompton's world, Awe, now we see... Wow, just WOW... poor No Nothing _uckers... that's what you want us to believe.

Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
So what is "criminal" (your words) about forcing a guy who weighs 180 pounds (his own fault) to come down to a reasonable weight to fight a guy weighs 160???
your exact words:
"I remember Bert talking about having to make weight for the Cerdan fight in less than two weeks, and when he got to London Cerdan's camp demanded more... "
"the great Cerdan and the only fighter DEMANDED to cut weight was the Feared & Cheated Scot's middle & light-heavyweight Bert Gilroy. But then again that's how his whole career went, unbelievable what was done to him through the years, criminal really."
I say again, you are pretending that Gilroy should have been allowed to come in at whatever weight he wanted (apparently 180) to fight a guy who was older and naturally smaller and then trying to pretend that there is something wrong with that. He may be your grandfather but thats ridiculous. So let me get this straight: Gilroy agreed to fight Cerdan who was a small middleweight. He shows up fifteen pounds heavier. He is asked to lose at least three more pounds to make the contest more even and is still allowed to outweigh the older, smaller fighter by 12 pounds and you want to complain that somehow Gilroy was at the disadvantage? Was he weight drained when he lost to Woodcock 10 months earlier at the same weight? Or was an 18 pound difference in weight just too much for him (even though your arguing he should have been allowed to weigh in at 180 against Cerdan)? If thats the case he must have been dead on his feet at 170 when he stopped Pat O'Conner just before Woodcock.
Instead of making bogus complaints about the weight do you think it might be more realistic to admit that seeing as how Gilroy lost to all of the best fighters he faced that maybe Cerdan had something to do with Gilroy getting stopped and not the weight?
Why do I hound you when you post this crap? Because its crap! Youve been going around forums for years trying to pretend your grandad was robbed of this and robbed of that and while I have no doubt he was held in high esteem in the relative small pond of Scottish boxing back then nothing changes the fact that he was A. Not world class, and B. Lost every time he stepped up. Boxing, especially in that era, revolves around making the most of whatever opportunities you get when you get them and he couldnt do that. Thats why its called the "hardest game" It isnt always fair but most fighters who have ended up as champions or greats have had to deal with their fair share of bad luck, people trying to hold them down, and the deck being stacked against them. The fact that they excel despite this is what proves their championship quality and sometimes their greatness. Gilroy never could get to that level. Its too easy and too cliche to claim "if this guy had gotten the breaks he coulda been a champion" B.S. in this sport you make your own luck with your own two fists. If Bert Gilroy was 10 to 20 pounds overweight at 5'8" and 29 years old when he agreed to face Cerdan its his own damn fault not Cerdan's for wanting him to come down to ONLY 12 pounds more than Cerdan's weight. If he was that great he should have whipped Cerdan's ass with a 12 pounds weight advantage or at least been competitive.

Re: Vincent Cerdan brother of Marcel?
Ok, Im just glad we are clear on the fact that in your world the great Bert Gilroy gets a pass on pretty much everything as long as it benefits him...
