So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
Anyone know when or how Thurman will get his shot?
I know he's the WBA Interim champ at WW but Mayweather doesnt do mandatories so i cant see that happening yet, certainly not while Keith brings nothing to the table apart from his ability,if he picks up another title then maybe Floyd will have a unification eventually but unless someone can actually give Keith a shot he cant get the title and a big scalp on his record
Pacquiao wont defend his WBO against Thurman for obvious reasons and a Brook fights a possibility, probably a year or so down the line, unless Brook becomes a serious possibility for Floyd then im sure Kell's team will want to avoid Thurman like the plague
So how does Thurman get a world title fight? Do the ABC's need to be stricter with Floyd with his mandates especially if he's inactive,i know he's more active now but still fights 1 fight less than most champs and thats a long, long time in a boxing calender but while he rules the roost, every other fringe WW is stuck in a traffic jam waiting on an oppurtunity
Thurman's stilll a young man with a long career ahead of him i hope but its criminal that a fighter so ready for a shot cant get one and the futures still not clear to my knowledge
Whats the story, will he ever get one???

It takes the piss to be honest because he's more than willing to fight anyone it would seem but doesnt get the opportunity to fight for the title.

lol abc orgs.
Asking how things work with an abc org is like asking how a mad, tired of this bs, zoo tiger would react in any given situation. There aren't really rules for this sh!t.

Go out and earn one.

I think he has to already to be fair. Even if you think he needs to fight more top level opposition, he doesnt seem to getting the chance to get in the ring with those guys and it's not of his choosing.expe wrote:Go out and earn one.

Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
I would imagine his best bet is for Mayweather to relinquish his 147 WBA belt and Thurman would be upgraded to full champ as he's interim champ
Anyway shouldnt Mayweather be defending against the interim champ as soon as he returns,as thats the whole point of an Interim title??
Fvck knows,im getting heartburn ;;-)

This is that GGG thing ("too good for his own good"). He doesn't have the resume yet, but obviously he's a talented guy, but he's still gonna need to fight the elite guys to become truly elite himself. It'll happen eventually just like it has for GGG in getting & winning the Geale fight.columbo wrote:I think he has to already to be fair. Zaveck - 37 years old, hadn't boxed for a yearcolumbo wrote:I think he has to already to be fair. Even if you think he needs to fight more top level opposition, he doesnt seem to getting the chance to get in the ring with those guys and it's not of his choosing.expe wrote:Go out and earn one.
Chaves - Beats a load of bums in Argentina, goes on the road for a payday, no different to most of the south americans that come over here for eliminators
Soto Karass - Lost 5 of his last 9 fights, never beaten anyone world class and the most basic fighter you'll ever see.
Diaz - Ageing, past it, blown up lightweight
I don't see how that's earning a world title fight. I don't expect him to fight any of the top names to get there, but there's the likes of Malignaggi, Alexander, Guerrero and Bundu out there, go out and beat one of them, Paulie seems to have retired but I have a hard time believing he would have turned a fight with Thurman down 6 months ago, Bundu would jump at the chance and Alexander and Guerrero are definitely possibilities.
Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
It's all about risk reward, but I have a hard time seeing him as the big punching, all conquering future king that many are proclaiming him to be. They've fed him a string of fighters that stood right in front of him to make him look good, when he goes in with someone who tries to box and move he'll have problems, the latest in a long line of overhyped fighters to be exposed.columbo wrote:I think it's because a lot of them know that he'd take them out!handsofstone wrote:columbo wrote: I think he has to already to be fair. Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
I am pretty sure nobody wants a a problem like Thurman landing on their doorstep...
... he's super-dangerous, can end it with one shot and hungry but still not well-known enough to make sure the fight generates mega-bucks. Keith is just going to have 'keep-on, carrying-on' until someone absolutely has to face him or vacate; I think Keith already knows this and is prepared to do what is necessary.
In the old days, Don King would at least pay someone like Thurman some very good step-aside dollars just to keep him out of the picture and give his own champ an easier, more profitable ride. Blimey....I think I've just said something vaguely positive about DK!!

FMJ is the WBA Super/unified so isn't made to defend against the interim. The 147 WBA Regular is vacant.handsofstone wrote:I would imagine his best bet is for Mayweather to relinquish his 147 WBA belt and Thurman would be upgraded to full champ as he's interim champ

Thurman vs Guerrero looks like a fight that could be made.
Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
I'd watched quite a bit of footage of Chaves before that fight and whilst you're right in the sense that he'd been beating mediocre south american opposition. He actually does have good skills. He's not a Hector Saldivia, etc. I'd pick him to give Brook a tough fight for what it's worth. Regarding Malignaggi, this video should change your opinion that Paulie wasnt against fighting him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3bz-9NQpFk .....Guerrero actually turned down Thurman not that long ago http://www.BS.com/schaefer-rob ... man--68969 ..... Thurman also had a fight booked with Maidana who pulled out at the last minute.expe wrote:Zaveck - 37 years old, hadn't boxed for a yearcolumbo wrote:I think he has to already to be fair. Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
I doubt many if any of the top welters think Thurman would beat them, that's not how fighters think, especially ones at the top of the sport. Its just a risk vs reward thing. Thurman is largely unknown so you aren't just going to give him a shot at your belt in a fight that makes no money if you can get more money for fighting guys who's limitations have already been exposed. Thurman is just going to have to get lucky and hope to find a decent fight for himself that puts him on the map or bide his time and keep racking up the KO's.columbo wrote: I think it's because a lot of them know that he'd take them out!
Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
Avoided like the plague.
Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
Yeah but the whole risk/reward argument answers that question in itself though. If fighters wernt phased by Thurman, do you think the whole risk/reward argument would come into it?CheckHook wrote:I doubt many if any of the top welters think Thurman would beat them, that's not how fighters think, especially ones at the top of the sport. Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
Yes, of course it would.... Thurman is obviously a dangerous fighter at 147 and the top fighters know that, that doesn't mean they are scared or don't think they would beat him, they just want to be well compensated for their work. If they can get as much for fighting a named fighter who's limitations have already been exposed then they are going to go down that route rather than jump at short money to fight a potentially dangerous fighter that wont get you any recognition or extra credit when you win.columbo wrote:Yeah but the whole risk/reward argument answers that question in itself though. Re: So how does Keith Thurman actually get a title shot?
In GGG case, WBA was doing its job having Geale (who didn't want to defend) drop his title and giving it to Golovkin. ABC orgs should try to create at least a visibility of fairness stripping people who consistently refuse to defend their titles.ReggieDiggs wrote:This is that GGG thing ("too good for his own good"). They should do a lot of sh!t they don't. Its a putting asses in seats sport & the abc's realize this so if you put asses in seats (or maybe if you just know or pay the right guy) the rules will bend for you. When GGG or Keith are drawing bigger crowds they will get the same advantages. Its the cycle of boxing.ikorolev wrote:ABC orgs should try to create at least a visibility of fairness stripping people who consistently refuse to defend their titles.

I'm going to laugh when Thurman goes from "everyone is ducking him" to "he keeps ducking everyone" once he gets that trinket.

He needs to go 'all Clubber Lang' in order to land his shot.
