Valuev's first name spelling & Height

Post by JCS »

http://www.valuev.com has the spelling as NIKOLAY

They also have his height at 7'.. I see its now changed to 7'2 in BoxRec's database for some reason... It was also 2.13m during the introduction at Ruiz v Valuev.. which is just a shade under 7'

There is NO correct way of writing any Russian name as it depends which translitteration you use... Nikolay is the correct spelling in German and he is based in Germany now (as is valuev.com). But the CORRECT way is what you see at the top of the page in cyrillic alphabet.

Because we are not going to have cyrillic alphabet in boxrec, IMO it is just a cause of huge confusion when names of Russian boxers are translated differently depending where they are based. For example we have Sergeis and Sergejs in database, but there is absolutely no difference in the original Russian 1st name. Valuev's name could be correctly written at least in 4 different ways (Nikolai / Nikolay / Nicolay / Nicolai) depending to which Western language you are translating it...

So PERSONALLY I think we should ALWAYS use English translitteration to have a uniform rule and not care whether some fighter would rather have one different letter there...

Well, as long as we all agree that 6'11.5" and 7'0" do not equal 7'2" in any country.. than at least I can be partially satisfied.

He's 2m 11, that's 6ft 11. He was measured live on German TV. And by the way, it's Nikolaj Valoejev in Dutch.

And Nikolai Valujev in Finnish, my mother language. There you go... just too many letters in Russian language which do not have a clear-cut counterpart in Latin alphabet. And that is without even starting to discuss their seven different versions of s/z...
