Two youngest Heavyweight Champions: Face Off

Post by Crease »

30th November 1956 - Floyd Patterson, aged 21 KO'd Archie Moore in the 5th round to become World Heavyweight Champion.
22nd November 1986 - Mike Tyson, aged 20 stopped Trevor Berbick in the 2nd round to become WBC Heavyeight Champion.

The question is this if both of them (as kids) on their night of fame were to fight each other.

Who would win? And what's your prediction?

- Remember whatever happened in their careers after these nights is irrelevant, we are talking about these two specific performances.

Cus trained them both well. I can see Patterson using his boxing skills and holding Mike off for a while. I'd go for a KO in round 7(ish)

It would be exciting while it lasted. They have similar styles and physical attributes, but Tyson was a lot bigger. I could see Floyd getting in some nice shots and bringing everyone to their feet, but getting also getting caught early on and stopped. His chin and defense weren't as great as his heart. He would have a shot at putting Tyson on his butt and maybe stopping him as this would be a case of a 'hooker' trading with another 'hooker,' but I don't favor this scenario.
Tyson KO 4.
FWIW, Floyd actually stopped Archie Moore in 5 rounds to win the championship. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:20514

Tyson is going to stop him, just a matter of how long it would last.
Having said that, there aren't that many other guys that Patterson wouldn't have a chance against the night he fought Moore. With the possible exceptions of the 2nd Jackson fight and the 2nd Johannson fight, this was Patterson's best fight.

I love Patterson, really nice guy and a consummate professional/gentleman. I hate to say it but Tyson would absolutely slaughter Floyd. Id like to be nice and say hed last a few rounds but I think he gets absolutely crushed in the 1st round. Even worse than the Liston fights. Just a bad style matchup. Part of the problem here in addition to Tyson being bigger, stronger, at least as fast, harder hitting, and more durable, is the fact that for all of Patterson's reputation as a boxer he was a guy who really liked to get in there and try to bang a guy out. He was all about getting KOs. Yeah hed hop around a bit and reset but basically he was always looking to leap in with a big punch or a flurry and then cap it off with a big punch. Against big durable bangers with class thats going to hurt him.

Tyson I think he's like Patterson 2.0 and not as fragile.

I would love to see it because I like them both. But Tyson would destroy Patterson in under 2 minutes of the 1st round.
I wish it would go longer but Tyson was explosive and Patterson had a weak chin.Bad combination.

How would that Tyson have done against Joe Louis (23) and Leon Spinks (24)?
Yes they weren't the youngest champs ever but still young enough..

Tyson KO1

A prime Tyson would devour Floyd just as quickly as Liston did

Patterson was not strong mentally. He was beaten as much by Listons reputation and aura than anything else and probably had the skills to hold Sonny off if only he hadnt crumbled psychologically.

The one thing that that the young Tyson could do better than any heavyweight I have ever seen is intimidate opponents, most being beaten before any punches thrown. I dont think Patterson would have coped with Tyson either phycically and probably more important mentally.
