Top Rank is the major force on HBO. They dictate dates and events. Everyone else kinda has to play along even if they are with a different promoter.

Can HBO afford to play hardball with TR? They kind of eliminated that tactic when they basically told the world that they weren't doing business with GBP anymore. Showtime is basically in the same position with GBP and Haymon fighters.

If there was some kind of immunity and the smaller promoters could talk, I'm sure we'd hear all sorts of weird shit.

So, basically this has nothing to do with what we were discussing. In no way this makes TR a part of GGG team, and in no way this allows GGG team to influence Arum.

Yes, it is, but somebody needs to invest in it. These two excellent boxers are not good enough draws to cover the huge risk of fighting each other.
Isn't that the truth.

I can only think that they'll showcase GGG for a bit more time and hope that someone comes in and fronts up the coin to make it happen.

Andre Ward and Gennady Golovkin are not big name fighters in the context of casual fight fans. Neither man is capable of regularly filling stadiums, nor are they able to generate enough intrigue amongst the general public to justify a pay-per-view event.

Andre Ward has only fought twice since his victory over Carl Froch in 2011, against two severely weight–drained men (Edwin Rodriguez and Chad Dawson).

Meanwhile, the best victories on the resume of Gennady Golovkin are against a terrified Matthew Macklin and a seemingly-shot Daniel Geale… and this seems quite bizarre considering he’s been on the world scene since 2008.

I’m not suggesting for one second that Gennady Golovkin or Andre Ward aren’t great boxers, but either due to a lack of quality of opponents faced or inactivity, they are fairly anonymous fighters and there simply isn’t enough money in such a fight to warrant the payday’s that they would demand.

I would love to see a Ward-Golovkin fight, because I’m a hard-core fan of the sport, but the average man in the street wouldn’t have a clue about who these two men are!
I hear you and your right for the most part.
Ward does have a few names on his resume whereas GGG's is a bit sparse.
Nevertheless the matchup is an absolute cracker as you know.
I don't know,it's sit and wait and see if the powers that be can pull some strings I suppose.

There's no way to justify it.. MW is a crap division right now and Rubio is mediocre at best and no where near a elite fighter. But hey, there's nothing more impressive than beating another top 15 guy in one of the shittiest divisions in boxing. Another shit match-up where GGG is in with a guy that stands absolutely no chance and people are going to act like GGG beat Sugar Ray Robinson when he beats this bum.

If Rubio is a bum, then Maidana is a bum too.

K2 Promotions were willing participants of one of Bob Arum’s schemes to trap Chavez Jr. to a contract, so that Top Rank always profits from promoting his fights, as well as taking 27% of his purses. They probably knew that Julio wasn’t going to agree to the terms dictated to him, but they went along with it anyway, as it was free publicity for their fighter, which was much akin to the Pacquiao-Margarito bout that was heavily publicised due to Bob Arum proclaiming to the world that he was in the midst of negotiating the terms of a super-fight with with Floyd Mayweather Jr., when he clearly wasn’t.
Purse Bid Shakedown wrote:I don't see how anyone can say Arum mistreated Chavez or anything like that. Without Arum Chavez is a joke, he's been managed tremendously and the rumored 2-fight extension was very generous. 27%, how about some links? Make sure it applies.

So once again you're not telling me what they were supposed to do instead.

The first link doesnt mention Chavez. The last 2 links don't mention 27% at all. In fact this doesn't sound like a bad deal or entrapment at all, sorry alt. Sounds like a super deal:
There were multiple other offers by Top Rank, which always included extensions. The richest one was a $7 million guarantee with a one-fight extension for $10 million if he won and $5 million if he lost. Again, we accepted the fight but not the extension.
Let me explain something, windup. When the fight is financed via network license fee, all promoters take a cut. May be 27% for TR, fine. Chavez fights are not financed by HBO. They're PPV, there's no 27% cut. Its whatever Arum and Chavez arrange. Please stop wasting our time, nobody likes you

C'mon now. Rubio has never beaten anyone as good as Broner, or even anyone as good as Josesito Lopez or Victor Ortiz for that matter. He's certainly never managed to take 4-5 rounds from an elite P4P guy, either. There is really no comparison here.

You're obviously a classy fellow! :OhYes: :TU:
Thanks. Notice nobody bothered to back you up on this comical TR/K2 collusion idea, or on Arum mismanaging Chavez etc. Yet you can't stop with this idiocy.

Actually it's very justifiable. GGG fought only last month against a consensus top 5 or so opponent and he's staying busy, there weren't many if any superior realistic options, and Rubio is a solid fighter and a good puncher ranked in many divisional top 10s.

You asked for evidence to justify my reasoning… and I provided it, but yet we continue to disagree. So we may as well move on...

Regardless as to whether or not we agree on a very minor point, I still maintain my main stance that Gennady Golovkin could have already mixed with bigger names if his career was managed better… and that his resume is lacking quality.

I honestly don’t think there’s anything particularly absurd with this opinion.
Not if put like that. Only becomes absurd when you try blaming him for the Chavez fight falling through, or for not fighting the likes of Sturm, Quillin, Murray who ducked him relentlessly.

Once again, your evidence:

He did beat Lemieux who is no worse than fighters you mentioned. And let's not forget that beside losing to Alexander and Khan, Maidana also lost to somebody named Andriy Kotelnik. Rubio didn't fight any top p4p in the last 4 years but he will in October.

Lemieux was like 21 years old and very unproven at the time. Maidana came VERY close to KOing Khan and only lost by a few points, and if you want to get into losses of course I could point out that Rubio has lost to the majority of the decent-to-good fighters he's faced, including Chavez, Baysangurov, Ouma, and Jantuah.

I understand that maybe Rubio was the best available option, but Golovkin is going to demolish him. It will not be competitive.

GGG vs Rubio is a decent match-up compared to Pacquiao vs Algieri or D.Garcia vs Salka, but still not great. Credit to GGG for saying so busy and entertaining us. I think this is his 6th or 7th fight in about 2 years? I guess like all champs when he starts making more money he will start fighting less.

One of the points of this match-up is to get new fans in California plus Mexican audience. Of course, beating Chavez would be better for that purpose, but Junior is hiding and there is nobody better than Rubio fitting for that otherwise.
