Deadliest in the final/very late rounds

Post by tagjohnson »

The below question about great finishers made me think who is dealiest in the last or very late rounds and I think Ali would belong up there in that category, once again with Frazier, Mathis, Shavers, Mac Foster, Jimmy Ellis... PS And uh, I love you guys but can we stay on topic?

Oliver McCall seemed to realize he was in a boxing match the last 2 or so rounds more than a few times.

SRL was very dangerous late in the fight even if he was winning, he didn't like to coast (Hagler was the exception) Ask Hearns and Mayweather.

Jim Jeffries. Knocked out Jim Corbett in the 23rd round; overwhelmed Tom Sharkey in the last five rounds of their 25-round fight in Coney Island.

Modern, I'd say Danny Lopez has to be considered. How many times did Danny come from behind to win?

IMO Alexis rates as the deadliest not just because of his great record of stopping people late but, whtin that, how well his knockout power carried into the late rounds.

MSM would be a decent shout here too, I'd say

True dat, his textbooky-textbook technique meant those right hands thundered into you with the same force in the fourteenth as the first...

Frazier could be a tough customer in the final reel....as could Ali.

Arguello, Jeffries.

I think Azumah Nelson did a good job as the rounds went by.

Rocky Graziano KO'd Red Cochrane in the 10th and final round twice, when he was far behind in the scoring both times. He KO'd Charlie Fusari in the 10th and final round, Rocky was also far behind in this one. Rocky stopped Tony Janiro in the 10th and final round with this bout up for grabs when he pulled it out.. He also had Harold Green down and almost out in the 10th of their 2nd fight.

good call. like Arguello a man with very correct punching technique whose power was a danger right up to the final bell.

Matthew Said Muhammad was fantastic late on.

Salvador Sanchez was remarkable in the later rounds; he was my hero as a teenager and I read that he'd do 8 miles of roadwork in the mountains at 5 am; he would out work and overpower his opponents as they faltered.

Julio Cesar Chavez Snr was as fierce late as he was early, in fact it seemed to take him a few rounds to get going.

Steve Robinson always had plenty in the tank to snatch a late victory.

Lupe Pintor was fit as a flea and kept the pace up, if he sniffed fatigue or weakness he upped the pace.

Barry McGuigan was pretty much the same as Lupe but boxed in a different style.

Brian Mitchell was similar, a proper hard distance fighter, strong in the last as the first.

I wanted to Ali's 15th round TKOs over Chuck Wepner and Oscar Bonavena as arguments in his favor.
