I fear for Froch's safety

Post by Kaaspeer »

He's one of my favourites, a great fighter, but he has taken enormous ammounts of punches in his career and he is 37 now... It was a warning that Groves knocked him down in the first round. I think Froch should only take 1 or 2 more fights before retiring, I wouldn't like to see him get some brain injury...

I don't think he's planning on more than 2 fights.

I'm sure you are hopeful he reads this thread and takes your advice. Do you realize that every boxer that steps into the ring has the risk of brain damage or even dying? It is their profession, and all realize the inherent risks involved. If they do not they had brain damage before they started boxing. I am guessing you are fairly new to combat sports, and never participated in them yourself. Not that it matters, but it makes what they do and why they do it easier to understand.

I'm a boxer, with experience in both karate and taekwondo, has recently started training kickboxing and muay thai a little. I know what I'm talking about. Froch is a strong warrior, but even the hardest of walls will crack with age in the face of continous attacks...

Froch will undergo the stringent of medical examinations, if something abnormal is shown he won't be allowed to fight in the UK.
Much more worrying is someone like Jermain Taylor who has suffered a brain bleed and is being licensed to fight again.

As long as he stays away from TripG, he should be OK.

This topic about fighters at the end of their careers resurfaces every month.

Morales put it best: when you're young, you're fighting for pennies. The big purses only come much later in your career. When you're reaching 37 or 40, you can look for another 9 to 5 job for a pittance, or climb in the ring once more for a small fortune.

Which are you going to chose ?

Someone who knows what they are talking about......Taylor's previous beatdowns are a legitimate cause for concern (even if he's facing against Soliman next) and I am not going to worry about Carl one iota.

Carl is whip smart and he showed against Groves at Wembley that it was a simple question of having not being focussed enough the first time round; the extra gear and instensity was easily refound and in conclusive fashion. Seriously, he's not worried and neither should we be.

Yeah, you're probably right. It's already sad for me to see Ali like this, I won't see Froch in the same condition.

There's a fellow on the British and Irish forum called GOmez who knows Froch personally; I'm sure he'd be able to allay your fears or pass your concerns on.

Thanks, I will ask him to do it. With the following message:

"Hi Froch. I'm a big fan of you and have followed your career closely. You have achieved a lot and I think you still can achieve more, you have surprised people plenty of times. But as a fan, I also think about your safety. I'm a big fan of Ali, so it saddens me to see him like this. You have taken many heavy blows in your career and you're 37 years old, I would hate to see you end in the same state as Ali. I would like to see you fight Chavez or some other guy, but do yourself a favor, man. Take 1 or 2 more fights and then retire. You have achieved a lot, you shouldn't add brain damage to your achievements, it could show later in life... Still, good luck, whatever you choose to go on or retire. Even the hardest walls cracks with time, I hope you get to avoid that regarding your health..."

The vast majority of fighters who go onto suffer pugilista dementia would pass any test provided when they where active. I think people just see the fights and forget the 1000s of rounds these guys have sparred and they will also usually have had tough amateur careers as well.

I know Froch will make his own mind up and rightly so, but I would personally like to see him hang them up.

Show me any stats that older fighters have a larger risk than peak or young fighters.

If you walk into a ring to fight the moment the bell rings your odds to take serious or deadly damage just went up drastically regardless of age or how many fight youve had.

Age slows you down and make you easier to hit.

So? Carl has never been the Floyd of 168. He's eaten his fair share. It's not like the 10,000 punch landed is the one that does you in. Any punch from #1 to #10,000 could be the one.

But they have greater experience of anticipating attack based upon an opponents positioning. And more experienced fighters learn how to slow a fight.

Apart from both the Kessler fights and the first Groves fight,Froch hasnt been in that many wars anyhow,Ward and Taylor were successful but they werent going to town on Carl, most of the demolition jobs in his career were waged by him

It seems Froch wants to leave on his own terms, whilst still in good form. From everything I've heard him indicate, he does want to retire soon, but will hopefully fight again at least once.
I don't think Froch has the personality to go on way past his prime and fight for prize money against younger guys trying to advance their careers- he's too proud for that.

How do you know this? Groves is quick-handed and hurt him significantly when he beat him to the punch with that right hand first round, which can happen to someone even if they're well focused. Froch seemed to spend a few rounds recovering from that I'm not sure his inferior performance in the first fight (though I also thought he was losing until he stopped Groves in the return) was due to him not focusing rather than him not getting caught with the same type of shot despite being comparably focused in both fights.

Also, while I don't think there's much evidence to suggest that Froch is having health problems or is imminent danger of sustain them, I have to wonder if he's slowing. Groves was not generally seen as a tough challenge before the fight, yet now because of his success in those bouts he's commonly seen as a top SMW, with the possibility of Froch struggling against someone who wasn't much better than expected not being considered. I'll be interested to see how far Groves goes.

I'm sorry, maybe I am the insensitive type, but I don't fear for any boxer's safety. Lets get real. Boxers do it for a living. Putting your personal feelings out there worried about a certain boxer is downright stupid. He is a big boy, he knows what he is doing.

And no Kasspeer, I don't buy for a minute you have any experience in combat sports, or you wouldn't be such a wus.

I admit I am an insensitive jerk sometimes, that unfortunately often will say what I think. Apologies for calling you a wus. I just have trouble feeling sorry for any of these guys that have chose combat sports as their profession. Football, MMA, Bull Riding, Nascar, etc - all can be life threatening sports that cause life long disabilities. I can empathize, but not sympathize....if that makes any sense.

It's the internet, people could insult my mom and I wouldn't care, lol. Technically, I shouldn't feel more sorry for Froch than the kids in Africa, he is just a cool warrior and I don't want to see him get handicapped.
