that's only a few words forming 2 short simple sentence.
i didn't know anyone was claiming he couldn't even read something like that, and after reading
it once who would need to read it again? who couldn't remember "hi, this is [insert your name].
watch me fight [opponent name] on [date]"? i'm not saying he can read or can't, but that isn't
proof of anything. proof would be the harry potter challenge. just pick a random page and tell
him to read. if floyd actually can't read, he could actually do a lot of good by going public with it
and overcoming that obstacle, but he would also be putting a target on his back so that is the
main reason why people keep it a secret. sonny liston was supposedly illiterate. when i was growing
up there was a guy who played like 10 years in the NFL (2 superbowls) who had graduated from
oklahoma state, dexter manley, who turned out to be illiterate. patrick ewing got into georgetown
university after graduating from an exam school in the boston area where the coach actually said
ewing needed "special tutoring" and at georgetown ewing wound up sitting in elementary school
classes with 3rd and 4th graders. that was back before the ncaa got strict about minimum standards.
i knew a few people from previous generations who were pretty good at math but never learned to
read in their own language and somehow just got by their whole adult lives in the usa with crude
conversational english and not being able to read a word. it would be humiliating, but floyd could
help a lot of people struggling with the same issues by overcoming it publicly as an example.
