Joe Calzaghe isn't beating Sergei Kovalev. In the only two meetings he ever had at 175, he was decked early by two 40+ year old men, both of whom started their careers in lighter weight classes. Kovalev would have demolished him. Jones might have taken a decision, but he'd have to box his ass off, as he didn't have the greatest chin.

Roid Jones beats him with his speed and reflexes and Kova walks through Calslappy's girlie punches and puts him to sleep (if a Senior Citizen like BHop can knock him down then SerGAY can put him to sleep).

Of course, Kovalev can't prove you wrong here like he will do it with your Hopkins prediction. ... and I guess after calling him THAT, you are not disclosing your address

Although making a big deal of being decked at the tail end of a career seems a bit petty. And wasn't Kov also knocked down last fight by an Aussie far from world class.

Yes, but there is a difference between going down at least partially because one's foot is stepped on and going down because one's legs give way just due to the impact of the blow. Calzaghe was down fairly hard against Mitchell and Salem too, though I don't make too much of it and his ability to recover was a strength; I could see him being dropped by Kovalev but thereafter taking control. I also question Kovalev's engine and Calzaghe would be one of the worst fighters to have stamina issues against.

Wasn't the Jones knock down from an elbow? I wonder how well Kov would have taken that shot?

I think it was from a forearm and who knows how Kovalev would've responded.

Brut mentioned the BHop knockdown, which was from a legal blow.

I like Kovalev, serious power puncher and a nasty streak to boot.
But let's put this in perspective.
To match up anyone with a prime Roy Jones takes a lot of doing, even getting into the conversation is an honour with a prime RJ.
Neither Calzaghe or Kovalev would be up to the task.
For me Roy Jones still holds the number 1 spot in all time personal performances against Vinnie Pazienza and that dates back to June of 95, when you can do what Roy did that night then come back to the table because that was special no matter who the opponent was.

People put too much significance on fights at the end of people's careers. Mich hadn't fought for nearly two years and was basically semi-retired when he lost to Tiozzo. Likewise neither the Hopkins or Jones fights for Calzaghe weren't truly representative of his peak. His hands were shot and he couldn't even spar. Still beat them though! It also shouldn't be overlooked that Joe was a super-middle and not a light-heavy.
The shot hands story is total bullshit. Sure he had hand issues as do many, many boxers but you act like he had lost the use of them.
Plus Calzaghe was miles closer to his peak than the shadow of Roy Jones jr that he faced and the well past 40 version of Hopkins.
Interesting that you point out Joe was a super-middle but manage to miss the fact that Hopkins is a just a blown up middleweight, significantly older and further past his peak than Calzaghe.
Wrong. Hopkins is a drained down Light Heavyweight, the weight he started his career at.

Kovey is a neophyte. Hopkins will prove it in November.

Both Jones and Calzaghe would toy with the Russian. KO or decision, it doesn't matter. The fight would be one-sided.

Well, there you go again, defending your crush Kovey at the drop of a hat.
Why don't you just propose to the guy already? Maybe he'll be so delighted by actually having a groupie, that he'll give you ringside ducats to witness his rear end handed to him by a legend who knows how to fight. Not just punch.

Oddsmakers projections don't win fights.
What takes place in the ring is the only thing that counts
Hopkins was a nearly 4-1 dog vs. Pavlik. We know how that turned out.
Maybe the "smart guys" are learning their lesson. They've only installed Kovey as a -270 choice.

I think Kovalev can be outfoxed but I don't know if anyone could do it for 12 rounds, we are talking about some serious power that guy has. Hopkins can only exploit the few defensive weaknesses Sergei has, there's no answer for a crushing right hand if it lands just try to recover before the next one. I do hope the Alien pulls it off, I'll dance a jig for sure.

He can be outboxed by a good mover with a high work rate. Bernard's work rate will not allow him to win many rounds against Sergey.
