Agreed. There was a period when he was white hot -so good at closing down distance and wearing people down and overwhelming them. Plus, that win over Kostya Tszyu is one of the great british boxing victories, in my opinion. Kostya was a superb fighter!!G0mez wrote:Hatton, during his short peak was a beast at 140lb and especially with the MEN right behind him - he was not a cake walk for any fighter at all.mickey1975 wrote: I know Ricky struggled with lefty's, I also think he's criminally underated on here.
I have massive admiration for Ricky and all he did for boxing in 2004-2008 in perhaps the hottest division in a long time.

It was a great night, the atmosphere was crazy. Definitely up there in the best British wins.
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
People wrote off Kostya afterwards, saying he old and inactive - well if that was the old and inactive version, at his peak he was an absolute machine.big lennox wrote:G0mez wrote:mickey1975 wrote:

Yes rust might have played a part, choosing to train and sleep at normal hours instead of planning himself to be at best for 3am+ was also a miscalculation. But enough about what Kostya did wrong, what Hatton did right (making him work every single second) was the only way he was going to make Kostya come unstuck, as it did against Phillips - and Ricky pulled it off.
I thought Kostya could have took it on points if he'd made the final bell, but he didn't so it's a completely moot point.
The excitement when it was announced, the build-up that week and the excitement actually on the day was electric. For those occasions we should be very thankful.

Although there was 10 months between the Hatton fight and his previous one, his previous one was against Sharmba Mittchell and he flattened him in 3 one sided rounds, so it was still a good version of Tszyu. The whole atmoshpere and sense of anticipation was amazing.

cotto would of knocked hatton out.G0mez wrote:I think he actually lost twice to him.mickey1975 wrote:Yes, why don't we all slag Ricky off for losing to the future light heavy Jurgen?
Once was in Cuba (junior worlds?) and I think the other was some euro comp.
Ricky always had a bad time with southpaws. Magee dropped him first as a pro, Pac hammered him.
Funny but i'd have picked Hatton to edge Cotto and Tszyu at 140 - but I'd have no faith against Zab Judah who was lightening fast, powerful more importantly a southpaw.
Styles.

Braehmer wasn't a light heavy when he tough hatton though Mickey so that point is a little moot.mickey1975 wrote:Yes, why don't we all slag Ricky off for losing to the future light heavy Jurgen?

Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
I disagree. When he boxed Ricky he was still growing, so whilst they weighed the same, I would put a good sum of money on Braehmer being a lot stronger than him.columbo wrote:Braehmer wasn't a light heavy when he tough hatton though Mickey so that point is a little moot.mickey1975 wrote:Yes, why don't we all slag Ricky off for losing to the future light heavy Jurgen?
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
Yeah but they weighed in at the same weight and were basically kids at the time. That's like criticising brook for instance for being a big welterweight and saying he has an unfair advantage.big lennox wrote:I disagree. Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
What's the actual point of the 'Braehmer beat Hatton in the ams' recital? Does it matter to anyone at all? Does it diminish Hatton at all? Does it mean Hatton was really a LHW - or that Braehmer could make 140? It happened, it means nothing, it doesn't need to be repeated over and over. Isn't this about Braehmer's chances (low) against Froch?
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
Someone inquired if they fought, so responding with the result is relevant and I don't see the problem with it.
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
They boxed at welterweight as 17 year olds, within a few months Braehmer was fighting at light middle and Ricky was back down at light welter. It's like Brook moving down to light welter and fighting a blown up lightweight.lefty wrote:Yeah but they weighed in at the same weight and were basically kids at the time. Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
Oh. It seemed like the whole thread was on about it rather than 'did they fight in the ams' and 'yeah Braehmer won' - it was like popping up 'KO' and then 'first round' - the disjointedness of it kind of implied that it was significant.crusader wrote:Someone inquired if they fought, so responding with the result is relevant and I don't see the problem with it.
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
That was just people elaborating on a result, as indicating that Braehmer by first round KO gives more information than just saying Braehmer won. I don't see anyone trying to make much of it or slag Ricky off, as Mickey asserted.
Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
I see what you're saying but at the time they fought they were the same weight. It wasn't like braehmer was an actual light heavy like he is now and Ricky was a light welter like he was for the majority of his career. Some of the posts make it sound like they were having a fight with no weight rule or something lolexpe wrote:They boxed at welterweight as 17 year olds, within a few months Braehmer was fighting at light middle and Ricky was back down at light welter. Re: Carl froch vs Jurgen Braehmer
It's difficult to find much information on their amateur careers, especially Hatton's, but they fought twice that year, both at Welterweight, with Braehmer winning both, one on points and the other in the first round. I can't find anything on when or where they happened and the score from the fight that went the distance. The only thing I can find is that Braehmer had been at the weight for at least 18 months beforehand, possibly longer and was certainly due to move up, Ricky definitely moved up in weight for the fight though, there's no other record of him ever fighting at welterweight as an amateur. It was probably an dual legged international meet between the two countries, he was likely shifted up in weight to fill a gap in the squad.lefty wrote:I see what you're saying but at the time they fought they were the same weight.
