What titleholders never fight in foreign countries?

Post by Freedom2013 »

What current titleholders have never fought for a title or defended their title in a foreign country?

Three who come to mind are:

Marco Huck
Floyd Mayweather
Andre Ward

Who are some of the others?

Golovkin, Kovalev and Froch have all had title fights in foreign countries.

Braehmer.

Sturm fought DLH outside of Germany, got robbed and has only fought in Germany since then.

Quillin.

Stevenson since he became a title holder.

Bradley is not a title holder anymore, but he has never fought outside of the U.S. In this case, I don't think that he has been avoiding foreign fights though.

In general, in most of weight classes, there is no point for U.S. champions to go fight somewhere else, as there is way more money in the U.S. WW is a good example of that. Everybody wants to fight Floyd in Vegas, so why would he go somewhere else.

I seem to remember Bradley going out to the UK for one of his most important fights...

Mayweather could have had a big stadium fight against Hatton in the UK, as Ward could have against Froch.

Ward could have a bigger payday fighting Kessler in Denmark or Stevenson in Montreal than fighting Rodriguez in the USA.

For most big stars from America. The tax situation of fighting overseas eliminates any possibility.
Why cost yourself more money?

Agree, I think a fair few American boxer's are quite ignorant to how big boxing is over here in the UK. Name one fight for a US boxer vs US boxer in the US that would sell out 78,000? I can't think of one that would do 30,000! And that's with a population of 5 times as much.

i don't get the qualification here. of course english boxers draw the most fans in england.
the gate for mayweather canelo was over $20mil, never mind the merchandizing and concessions and
everything else floyd gets a piece of in vegas, in addition to his showtime contract.
you really think floyd is ignorant about how much less he would take home after taxes for an england fight?
ward would fight froch or kessler in europe tomorrow if he wasn't in a war with his promoter.
pac-clottey and pac-marguerito both drew over 40k fans to cowboys stadium, with mostly
foreign undercards, too, and the 2 fights combined for like 2mil domestic ppv.
why is it a negative that boxers from all over the world fight each other in main events in the
united states? when chavez-haugen drew over 130,000 in mexico, is it a slight that haugen
wasn't mexican? dempsey-tunney drew over 120,000 but i can't think of many usa fights in
stadiums in recent years.

Are you missing the point? All i said was name one US domestic fight that would sell anywhere close to 78,000 in the states and you haven't given one! Ward wouldn't fight Froch in Notts or Kessler anywhere in Denmark tomorrow. He's never been that type. He's been asked about it even before all the promotional issues and said the fight would be in the US.

Floyd could. Carl vs George did about a $10M/US gate (if my pounds to dollars conversion is correct). That makes the price per ticket average about ~$130/US. Floyd vs Marcos did a $15M gate with a price per ticket average of ~$950. There is no doubt in my mind if Floyd fights were held in bigger venues that could hold 80k+ & his per ticket average was $500-$800 lower he could sell those seats.

it depends on the ticket prices. "domestic fight" is the weird qualifier i was questioning.
floyd vs thurman, bradley, andrade, garcia, and maybe a few others at $100 ticket
might sell 100,000

Personally i doubt it but I'd love to be proved wrong as there's some great fights to be made.

if he did, the gate would earn him $10mil, half the canelo gate and equal to the froch-groves gate

Boxing is big in the UK, but who is there to fight beside Froch ? Not too many big names.

No one is as big as Froch but Brook Khan could do 50,000, Quigg Frampton could do 30,000 + if Frampton beats Kiko again. Clev Bellew 2 could do 20,000. Groves Degale 2 could do big numbers. In the future Anthony Joshua, Callum Smith and Luke Campbell will do big numbers if all goes well. Plus the domestic scene is very exciting and competitive with large halls/small arenas being filled with white hot atmospheres as Boxers over here gain loyal followings unlike in the states.

Americans throughout the 80s, 90s, 00s have rarely left the USA to fight, especially in a dangerous fight

Why bash today's fighters.Larry Holmes and Tommy Hearns neither defended their belts over seas.
Ray Leonard only defended once in Canada. This has been going on for years.
The champ does not need to travel to the opponents backyard. They earned that right.

Yet some people make threads saying European boxers who fight in their home countries are $HIT for doing it.

... except when two champs are fighting. Of course, some European fighters called names in other threads prefer not to fight other champs. Many champs mentioned in this thread barely ever fight other champs.
