Magomed Abdusalamov is still a fighter
I saw this posted on another website. Apparently it's of some of the rehab tough Mago is going through...
Warning, it's pretty hard to watch...just seeing how much he has lost.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh13vaZHpnk
I'm not ashamed to say I teared up pretty hard watching this. This guy put it all on the line for the sport he loved, fighting a tough dude with suffering from a broken hand, cheekbone, and nose...and still making it competitive. I wish him well in his recovery.
A couple good things I think we can take from this:
I had read he was blind, but he clearly is able to see here.
He seems to have pretty good hand eye coordination in the side they are rehabbing. Very good progress for someone with a brain injury.
Get well soon, champ!!

He lost a tremendous amount of weight.
Physically therapy can work wonders. Best of luck to a courageous fighter. He is a fighter and a sportsman in every sense.

Motherf#ck. As a boxing fan its less painful if a guy just dies than seeing them alive but like how Magomed is or Gerald McClellan is.

The weight loss was the most shocking part as he barely looks like the same person.
I'm glad he was able to do what he was doing in that video. It seemed like he was even worse off from the stuff I've read. Hopefully he continues to progress and gets some quality of life back.

Yes, it is VERY hard to see someone so physical reduced to so little physically.
I mean it's hard to see anyone suffer, but Mago was a big big dude and he has lost so much. I hope he can recover to the point where he has good quality of life.

Pretty depressing to watch to be honest and makes you question why you watch boxing. Regarding the weight loss, a lot of that is just muscle wastage where he hasn't be doing much physical exercise. Particularily in the legs you can see that. It's strange seeing him with hair aswell as he always had his head shaved. Hopefully he can get to a level where he has some quality of life though. You have to really feel for how family aswell. I know he had three daughters with his wife so it must be very tough on her. Even for Magomed himself he must think to himself at night at times why did I become a boxer and he probably has a lot of regret.

Most casual boxing fans don't give a sh*t about the fighters themselves.Pretty depressing to watch to be honest and makes you question why you watch boxing.
As much as they enjoy boxing, they'd probably rather watch a bar-fight.
They just want brutal entertainment without the guilty feelings. Which is how those same people can sit on the internet and call a HOF fighter like JMM a p*ssy and a coward when he makes more calculated risk vs reward decisions regarding opponents in his old age, despite all he's already given us- at his own physical expense.
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is still a fighter
A lot of people Monday morning quarterback a fight after a devastating ending by clamoring, "Why didn't they stop the fight? How could they have let it go on?"
But I've watched the McClellenan, Duk Ko Kim, and Abdusalamov fights and while they all were violent brawls, there wasn't necessarily a time where these fight should have been stopped. The participants were all fighting back, and someone wrote that Abdusamolev even won the last 2 rounds. I'd have to watch it again to see if I agree, but my point is that in neither of these 3 fights was it apparent that they would end in tragedy.

Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is still a fighter
The biggest issue with the Mago tragedy is that he was left to try and hail a cab to take him to the hospital after the fight. He waited, vomiting on the sidewalk, for several hours before he finally could get to the hospital. Criminal charges should fall against the commission for that one.Tony1244 wrote:A lot of people Monday morning quarterback a fight after a devastating ending by clamoring, "Why didn't they stop the fight? The guy was complaining after the fight and MSG and the NYSAC made him take a fornicating cab to the hospital. I hope to god they have to pay millions for that. The NYSAC is being sued because they were negligent.

100% in agreement here. I think few are Monday morning QBing the fight & most are saying wtf about the post fight negligence that happened (imho obviously). If better post fight things would have altered the course for Magomed is speculative @ best, but the fact all we can do is speculate on it is my problem with this incident.punchoutsb wrote:The biggest issue with the Mago tragedy is that he was left to try and hail a cab to take him to the hospital after the fight. They did their best given the circumstances. TWO ambulances were at the scene, but Mago had to wait vomiting on the sidewalk until a cab was hailed.
The commission and doctors involved should pay 100% of Mago's medical bills, pay his family damages, and face prison time. Of course nothing will actually be done; they will all keep their jobs and keep making money. But if there were any justice in the world these CRIMINALS would be paying a VERY severe punishments.

he looks like he can see the baloons he is hitting and he can hear and understand
the instructions his therapists are giving him. i have seen people in really bad
car accidents who had to re-learn how to feed themselves and to talk and in time
they regained pretty normal lives. ken norton almost died after rolling his truck
off the highway in '86 and was once worse than mago is in this video. he got back to
where he walked with a slight shuffle and slurred a little while talking but was
able to live a more or less normal life until he had some strokes last year and died
at 70. as tough as it seems right now, mago could actually be back walking and talking
at some point after a lot of hard work. i wouldn't give up on him yet

Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is still a fighter
yes, that is true, they told that dude to get into a cab.
The NYSAC, under Lathan at that time was a total corrupt mess. There was an IG's investigation where they let one fighter bring and wear freaking bag gloves in a bout, and the other fighter, who did not know any of this did abide by the rules wore the promoter approved 10 oz fight gloves. The fighter got hurt pretty good by the NYSAC's bag glove wearing guy. To add insult to injury the NYSAC all lied under oath during the investigation. A few people got launched over it, and the NYSAC had to come up a posted gloving policy, which they were told to put on their website (which they did)
Two people were fired from NYSAC a few months later, but no reason given, but I would say that I think this had something to do with that event.
Also, Lathan was reduced to a figurehead a few months ago, as David Berlin, a lawyer who represented boxers such as Joey Gamache and Iran Barkley, was put in as the head of day to day operations, Lathan was kept on as a figure head, holding onto her job by the slimmest of margins. However, Berlin now has all the power and say so. Berlin is a breath of fresh air and a proponent of safety and fair play, the polar opposite of Lathan and her cronies.

Another update:
Mago goes home!

Apparently they feel he can still make some more progress over the next year. Hopefully enough to give him some proper quality of life.

That was upsetting to watch. Massive props have to be given to his wife and also the family friend who has spent 100k plus fitting the house up in the way Magomed needs it. Great guy.x2x wrote:Sad news:

Brain injuries do terrible things to people -- and this is the reality of referees and corners allowing battered fighters to continue.
When Mike Avarado was being battered by Ruslan Provodnikov his corner was arguing vigorously with referee Tony Weeks to let it continue... He said "SHUT UP!!! I want to talk to the fighter... MIke, do you want to continue?" ... Mike looked down and Weeks waved it off.." A good move... No boxer wants to quit... What I hate is when a boxer would like to be pulled out and the referee says... "I'll give him one more round." ... A lot of things can happen in a round.

What a fight he's put up, though.
I related to him the most of any boxer because he reminded me of myself. When I was boxing I hit harder than the heavyweight champ according to my old time NYC trainer, but he also allowed that I didn't know what the hell I was doing, and I wasn't interested in defense, boring subject. I even had the same hair do when I shaved my head. Had I gone on that could well have been me.

I had a good friend who was a doctor at St Vincents hospital in lower Manhattan where they brought him. I tried to call him a few days after to ask him how Mago was doing - and I was told on the phone that my friend - he was a young guy! - had just passed away!
