The article is confusing, did the first Brit win it in 1928 or was 1928 just the year the award was first given out?

(They started giving it out in 1928. No Brit has ever won it until now. Hatton was the first.)

Nice one for Ricky, shows that Americans must be excited by him.
Must have been a close call between him and Jermain Taylor, both beat long term champions, maybe it was the fact that Ricky stopped Tszyu , Taylor won 2 tight decisions over Hopkins.

What a fantastic acheivement.

You see all these superstars - Hearns, Leonard, Whitaker, Tyson, Chavez with their Fighter of The Year belts over the years - never for one second do you imagine that a Guiness loving, dart playing fighter from Manchester is going to one day be on their level.

I must say, I'm a little surprised.

Just goes to show, that the Yanks do actually rate some of our fighters. Not sure I feel it is entirely deserved, but then again, who else has a stronger case.

Taylor barely squeaked by Hopkins in two dismally boring fights.

Mayweather hasn't beaten anyone of note this year.

No heavyweight has really shone this year.

Winky only beat a shell of Trinidad.

Castillo lost to Corralles, and vice versa.

Morales got beat, Pacquaio too, Barrera not done much since beating Morales.

If Taylor and Winky get it on, the winner has a strong case next year.

My personal choice was Lorenzo Parra, beating 3 top 10 guys in their countries.

He's already been awarded the Ring's belt. I think that each fighter who receives such a belt does get to keep it, as each belt is personalised.

I reckon Hatton deserves to be their fighter of the year. Who else in world boxing, this year, has destroyed and effectively ended the career of a top three pound-4-pound fighting machine and future hall of famer?

Yes Ricky did destroy Tszyu - left him a beaten man, sitting on his stool.

Hatton was an easy winner for my money - Taylor was judged lucky by many in the first one, and bored everyone to death in the 2nd.

Good call, can't argue with his achievements this year. Shame the lower weights are ignored, Parra would have been a shout had he been in a higher division.

lennox had a good year 2000.

bit unlucky not to get it that year.

1997 as well.

naz had a great year in 97 to.

I, as are you, am entitled to an opinion. I see his later fights as ugly, barging, holding, pushing and wrestling. Fact.............not fiction.

Excellent body punches, surprisingly good jab, excellent workrate, marauding style, exciting fighter all FACTS too. Just my opinion.

I just wish he would work behind his jab, like he used too. Can't fault the workrate either. I just dont like the wrestling, he might just come unstuck against an old style boxer.
