Mark de Mori - WBU belt

Post by Gnome »

26(23)-1 Mark de Mori will be up against 16(14)-1 Marino Goles from Croatia for the WBU heavyweight title. The fight will take place in Holzminden in Niedersachsen, Germany.

Goles' record is flattering, with only four of those wins against fighters with winning records (including 1-0) and were mostly at cruiserweight (which boxrec rates him outside the top 200). He also lost his last fight (retired after three rounds) against Alexander Petkovic.

Will de mori's career be advanced by defending the title against the 4th best cruiserweight in Croatia? Or is beating a 16-1 fighter a good enough win to bolster his credentials for a WBA title bout of some description?

If you lean your head too far out from desolation row, you can hear Mark singing:

The branch of the linden is leafy and green,
The Rhine gives its gold to the sea.
But somewhere a glory awaits unseen.
Tomorrow belongs to me.

Two guys with equally padded records fighting for a nothing title. Totally underwhelming really.

Looks like it is a 16-1 Croatian guy now. Retired in the 3rd his last bout. But it's a better match up...on paper.

If De Mori gets this WBU World Strap I put up a challenge on behalf of Chauncy Welliver. Being a Quadruple Continental HW Champion by 30 has been good work by Welliver. But that elusive World Strap is still missing. I think he could lift the WBU World Belt off Mark de Mori easily. Hillyard Hammer comes to Germany and Smashes Mark de Mori! Wipes the floor with him sweeping every round until and unless de Mori goes down and out. As Welliver is the King Chin of HW Boxing with 400 consecutive rounds without going down. de Mori is too weak to change the streak. I see he already has this title. Perkovic looks like he rumbled with him for it and made it close. I was gonna crack on him for going 12 but Perkovic looks to be a brave a and hard fighting dude. Lots of rounds against fairly good to real good fighters. But if Perkovic can get a 115 113 card Welliver can sweep him out of the ring. :bag:

Welliver is not yet inactive 7 months. Injured an arm in February but he could still beat de Mori 1 handed.

If Tua, Briggs, de Mori or a Klitschko call, Welliver will answer the phone and every bell till the other man fell.

Sticks And Stones Can Break Some Bones But de Mori Could Never Hurt Welliver. 400 rounds and counting for Welliver without going down. Still chasing old Oliver McCall and the record HW round streak he holds at 432. Mark can be a part of the greatest streak of all times at HW. On the losing end and notches for however many rounds he can last on Chauncy's round belt. The WBU title is a World Strap but being notches on Welliver's round streak is on an Immortality Strap. Welliver will catch and smash Oliver McCall's record and nobody will ever beat it. But give McCall credit....he keeps going rounds and looks like he could fight till he was 100 without going down. He will be caught though. Welliver has youth and super hero capabilities on his side. If the two guys fought now it would be a combined 832 pro HW rounds without going down in the same ring....by far a world HW record. Tua blew his streak against Barrett but he made it a long ways. I think de Mori Tua Briggs and McCall would be a nice way to set the record.

Kronk, I'm a fan of Welliver but if he ever decides to return to the ring he has got to lose a lot (and I mean a LOT) of flab. Not every heavyweight boxer will resemble David Haye but Welliver is a good 60lb over what he should be. I would love de Mori to fight Welliver - Welliver has a lot of skill - but not if the Chauncy who lost to 49yo Billy Wright comes in.

By the way, remember how a few years ago there were rumours Vitali would defend his WBC against Welliver? Boggles the mind (said as a Welliver fan!).

Chauncy was up to #5 in the world in the WBC and the WBO. He had a match with Povetkin if he could have scraped a couple more poits out against Sherman Williams in China. 113 115 113 115 114 114 is the card that kept him from getting the world title shot. And the thing about it is that he was probably too light and overtrained at that point. Any other night and he easily beats Williams as Tank did not have the output to match a fresh and healthy Welliver. He got worn down from jetting all over the world and being one of the most active HW fighters of the period. And in between fights he was still going to camps to be the main sparring partner as his durability makes him one of the best HW sparring partners in the world. He was the main guy for Povetkin in his Chagaev camp.

Welliver got all he way down to the low 230's when he was training and fighting non stop for 2 years or so straight. It was that activity in all the regions that helped him rise up through the rankings but it also caught up with him at the end of the run. It's hard to jet half way around the world for fights and adjust back and forth to massive time zone changes. He'd be in New Zealand defending a belt, then be training in the USA and defending a belt. then he'd run off to China and defend a belt, he was back and forth like crazy. Roland Jankelson and Joe Hipp had him training all the time too. They got real close and the whole camp did well to get as far as they did but a few weeks off here and there probably would have been better for him in hindsight. Welliver's prime fighting weight is about 250-260 pounds in my opinion. 230 was too low, 300 was too high but it was amazing that he could hang with an Olympic Gold medalist like Solis on 2 weeks notice and do it at 300+ pounds. But in the middle of his highs and lows is his best weight. At 250 or so he is not carrying extra weight to tire himself but he is still carrying enough weight that he wasn't terrorizing his body to get down to it. 230 or so was pretty much terrorizing his body as he is a naturally heavy guy. I always said with him that the number on the scale was not the thing to aim for. Aiming for his body to feel its strongest was the goal to go for. But he did everything his handlers wanted on weight and training and he proved to the world that he was serious and could shed the extra weight. It was a pretty good run and very few men ever get as close as he did to a world title fight. No matter what he will always be a guy who cracked the top 5 of major sanctioning bodies and got recognized worldwide.

But the World Title is still missing and lesser men like Mark de Mori are running around calling themselves World Champion. de Mori has a strap but he has never accomplished what Welliver has or shown the courage to go for it like Welliver did. It is offensive to real HW fighters for de Mori to be called World Champ. Welliver could remedy this situation with even minimal training and carrying a lot of weight. 280-300 pound Welliver still whips Mark de Mori. In Germany or in Australia. Lots of people didn't really care for all the various regional titles Chauncy had but that is the real deal and the real path to one of the real significant world titles. Welliver never sought these off the wall organizations for a world belt, he went after the big 4 belts. de Mori didn't have the stones to take the real path to the real significant titles. He took a short cut to calling himself World Champion. He deserves to have his arse kicked for it and that is what Welliver will do to him if he will man up and put his title on the line against a real challenger. Legitimize the WBU Belt by facing Welliver for it de Mori! To be the man you have to actually beat a man. You're half the man Welliver is.

Kronk, you never fail to disappoint. I would love Welliver to get back in the ring, 30 is too young to hang up the gloves. Welliver got him best wins (Calloway, Tuasa) around 230lb while losing to 4-0 Fujimoto at 250lb though. No shame in losing to Williams - I don't think it was the fault of his weight, just had an off night.

Welliver comes across as a good humble guy, but of late he's put in some pretty poor performances. The Williams fight, the defeat to the Japanese novice and I know he was injured but he looked awful against ancient billy wright. Maybe he needs a little time away from the ring to refocus. I think I'm right in saying he's just had his first child, I guess he has to decide what he wants from boxing.

Welliver vs Wright was a blight on the sport. Chauncy is a nice guy, but his career is now nothing more than a sumo sideshow.

How many rounds since Chauncy got stopped? Answer is zero.

This is on tomorrow night. Predictions? Will winning this by KO (as he should) move de Mori anywhere? Is this guy going places anytime soon?

How about a WBU-IBO reunification bout with Toney!! If Browne can do it...

His opponent's record might read 16-1 but take a closer look. All nobodies. If he was any good de Mori wouldn't have agreed to fight him.

Delusional De Mori name dropping Ruslan Chagaev.
Now that's one fight we're never likely to see.

I think de Mori would be a good opponent for Chagaev. Relatively young, good record, looks the part and of course Chagaev would be the favourite. As de Mori is based in Croatia, it could easily take place in Eastern Europe or Germany.

Infinitely more favourable than an Oquendo rematch.

Absolute joke that the WBA have De Mori ranked 13th.
He must wake up at night in a cold sweat at the thought of having to fight someone in the top 15.
But of course it's never going to happen
BoxRec have him at 91 he has never fought anyone inside the top 200.
Don't expect that to change. It'll be another fat 40+yr old Slav with a 300+ ranking.
This bloke will never fight anyone with a pulse. .

Perkovic rated. WBU? Why can not this Sport pull
It together & stop causing all this confusion with the general
Public? WBU & Ibc are same thing! As far as a win against 16-1 pro get him noticed by WBA? Well that is possible. Welliver is established yes but, too, he isn't consistently strong in there.
WBU title could be worth better if they made a pronounced/ "reduced" league. No one in the general sector pays even the slightest attention to boxing in 2014-15. Why's that? Wait, wait.. think we are onto something here..............
Marlon Starling is from here. In his prime their were two groups only WBC & WBA. Was "easy" to unite as VITO ANTUOFERMO DONE! Now, it's sickening to an extent but, I don't know how to fix it.
I know about the HVY-wts that I do because I dig it up. I know where to see Ratings. Results. Your casual fan believe you me won't know what even BoxRec is!
Still though, it is (along with "sane organizations") who fights who when & results that "Shake" & Move Boxing. If their EVEN were a match today with same magnitude of a COONEY-HOLMES and they had sanity on the organization then, it would draw interest of the People! ("No 'race' card needed/ if that was part then -?-") (even Tyson- Mspinks hold no candle next to the "culture" of Holmes & Cooney/ of course I'm talking Build-ups only....)
Anyone on this stream involved first hand with the WBU? I wish to talk there and see if we can't "round- up". Since 2007 I am working to "echelon" the Sport. [email protected] John Wilkinson Ex-pro-am (50-50 record in all..) from Connecticut, USA.

This mythical fight against an unknown opponent this Saturday is not listed in BoxRec, but there is a bout progged for 7th February 2015, against that contender: TBA.

In a recent interview, our man in Croatia said:
“If Chagaev’s team are interested in negotiating with my promoter Don King they have my details,” de Mori said. “Ruslan is a respected fighter and if I am to make it to the top I need fights like these against well known experienced contenders.
That'll be the day!
