What is so great about Roman Gonzales?
I keep seeing this guy's name pop up and I admit that I haven't seen much of him. But from what I did see, he was not very impressive. So where is all this hype coming from?

footwork, power

....and arguably the best combination punching in boxing, accurate, extremely composed, diverse attack, durable, solid defense, no weaknesses.
He's also beaten, usually very handily, several top fighters and current/former world champions across multiple divisions. He deserves most of the praise he gets.

Can't think of many Gonzalez fights where he hasn't been impressive tbh. The guy's incredible, pretty much everything you could ask for in a fighter imo.
Plus, he has dominant victories over:
Katsunari Takayama - went on to be considered the top man at Minimumweight.
Francisco Rodriguez Jr - now considered the top man at Minimumweight (having beaten Takayama).
Juan Francisco Estrada - whose next significant fight was a dominant win over Brian Viloria to establish himself as #1 at Flyweight and is now on the fringes of P4P.
Akira Yaegashi - was the lineal Flyweight champion until Gonzalez slaughtered him.

agreed on all counts. all i'd add is you don't often see the above abilities and skills teamed with genuinely heavy hands.crusader wrote:....and arguably the best combination punching in boxing, accurate, extremely composed, diverse attack, durable, solid defense, no weaknesses.

It's a given that I'm no fan of Wlad's, but does anyone really think he's more skilled than Bradley? Obviously he's a tremendous puncher so if you're taking size out of the equation he always has a chance, but being the most skilled Heavy these days leaves you lacking. He's beaten one top 50 p4p fighter in his career. Roman is such a beast that Estrada is underrated.

Indeed, going 12 with, and winning the odd round off, Gonzalez, at the pace they fought at, looks better and better as time goes on.

I was ringside when he fought Omar Soto in 2011 on the Nishioka v Marquez undercard and he was 29-0 at that point.
The knockout happened so quick I almost missed it.
He looked good back then.
