British LMW Division

Post by danamba7 »

We have Beefy and Rose at euro level and Selkirk is decent but the LMW division is definitely one of our weakest.

Do we have any young prospects coming through who look like they could be British/Euro and possibly even world level? There's usually good fights at 154 with some big names in and around the division, would love to see some Brits up there in the coming years.

Lol it's funny because I saw an article the other day about Paul Smith talking about his world title shot and he was saying about how the rest of his brothers are nailed onto be world champions but he isnt. Kinda funny ha.

A fight id like to see is ryan aston v jason welborn for midlands title both ranked highly. Ranked 11th and 6th. Also been a bit of needle in the local papers with welborn calling him out after comments aston made.

Mike towell from dundee, I'm not sure if he is going down to welter but anyone who has seen him will tell you he's an insane fighter, he's like a mini mike Tyson, the exact same head movement and just goes toe to toe, body shots and head shots and is relentless, I think he stands a better chance at welterweight but he would hold his own domestically for me,

I refereed Mikey Towells debut against Tom Bowen and I knew then he had a great style for the pros. It was only 6x2s which helped Bowen alot as Towell was getting to him come the end of the round. If it was over 6x3s he probs would have got the stoppage. After the way Carslaw boxed last time out I wouldn't mind seeing Towell v Kris.

Jamie Cox is back fighting again soon,he`s had a long time out but he has the pedigree to be a contender domestically if his hand`s fully-healed

Let's not get too carried away with Mike Towell just yet Jamie and Dougie! Yes he is exciting, strong and can punch but we really need to see how he gets on in a full 6x3 or above to see if he can keep that aggression up for the long haul. Jamie Coyle has done a great job refining his rough style but i still remember him being soundly outboxed by boxers over 3x3 minute rounds that weren't top amateurs!

If he keeps improving then he will be an exciting ride for the fans but talk of him fighting Kris Carslaw are very premature!!

I'm saying hes a good fighter mate and can do well domestically, don't you think? For me the longer rounds should suit him, if he is properly fit he will be a nightmare for any fighter, he's relentless and can take a punch to give one, the fans will love him and hed def be good tv, will he get above domestic I don't know, i would put him at welterweight though as when he fights a bigger light Middleight struggle, as for carslaw I heard that there sparring was a little entertaining, towell looking for a stoppage ha, but dundee is a bad place for rumours

Only slightly off topic but I'd say Light Welter is weaker than Light Middle right now, which is a shocker considering the strength & depth of its history in the UK.

I agree that he could do well in domestic fights but he needs time to learn too, he's only had 3 fights and Dougie has said he would like to see him in with Carslaw. Too much too soon imo no matter how sparring went!! I'd like him to rematch Rhys Pagan in a defence of his Scottish title, then have a couple of other bouts then maybe John Thain. By that time Kris would be another year older and Mike would have more experience against higher opposition.

The longer rounds will only suit him if he is super fit because it would be very hard to fight throwing the bombs he does for 10-12 rounds, his cardio and recovery would have to be at crazy levels!! haha I hope he gets the right fights to bring him on and i'm sure Jamie Coyle will help guide him teh right way. As for Welterweight I'm not sure if he would want to go down in weight because he will still be filling out and he personally told me before the Pagan fight that he felt better in training at Light Middle. Only time will tell on that one!

I reckon Kell Brook could be up at LMW in the next 18 months, that will improve it

Hopefully mate, he's got potential but as you said can't be rushed, I just think he needs to keep progressing and not fight people he's gonna have his own way woth, he comes across a fighter who needs to be pushed, pagan be a great rematch, aberdeen show mate?;) we all know that there is no better show in Scotland , matty v craig kelly also,

You never know mate!! Just want to get Saturday over so we can sort out the fights on the bill. Matty vs Craig won't happen on the show now and will be more likely for after Christmas now!! You going down at the weekend??

I'd say LWW is slightly stronger than LMW even though Khan moved up. It's still got Hamilton, Limond, Nurse, Saunders, Theophane, Boylan, Daws and isn't Ricky Burns moving up too? Still could do with improvement though!

Hello Dan,

With the exception of Saunders I wouldn't describe any of the above as even close to Euro level whereas Rose & Smith both are.

I will admit my views are clouded by the love of Light Welter & many of my favourite fighters/fights over the year have come through that weight.

True. No euro level fighters yet but a better mix of domestic level fighters than LMW it seems.

Fair Point Davie. Just getting carried away as he's a very exciting lad, kris would most likely have too much for him at this stage. The Pagen fight should happen again. Pagen had took some big shots but am sure he was nicking every round until Towell caught him. I know Paul Graham is wanting it again. Who else we got at light middle up here? John thain can still come again, no shame in losing to Carslaw when he's in that form.

Defo John Thain can come again, he just needs to get back fighting asap and not worry about the Carslaw fight because that is the best Kris Carslaw we have seen in a long time!! I know Mike Towell would take the fight at anytime so it will be good to see again especially since the Pagan camp thought it was an early stoppage!

What weight is John McCallum? Think he might be light middle and is with a promoter from London!

Only saw him against Ronnie Heffron when Chisora Fury 2 should have happened. Very composed in that fight impressed by what. I saw.

Jack Caterall looks a very good prospect from what I've seen 21 younger than the fighters on that list.

Brutal KO in his last fight.
