Eddie Hearn vs Frank Warrens sons

Post by David McAllister »

I always see Eddie Hearn being compared to Frank and how Frank has guided fighters from start to finish but imo it's the same as comparing fighters from different era's or stages in their careers.

Frank has done it but so has Barry Hearn in the past so why don't we debate which of the new breed of the family are better?

Imo Eddie and Frank's sons Francis and George are at the same stage of their careers so i don't think we can really judge any of them until they have actually taken a fighter from scratch and proved they have done things correctly or done wrong by their fighters.

Who will come out on top? Eddie Hearn or Francis and George Warren ?

Who do think?

I think that is a great point David! They have both come into the family business with an established brand and pedigree etc... Surely they have both learned a lot from their respective families...and I am sure will both be good at what they do, but I guess it all comes down to their motivation and relationship skills within the industry. They will only be able to go so far on the reputation of each of their brands. I will say more boxers will be looking at Eddie after what he did at Wembley but that is more about exposure on a big stage than anything. Credit to Eddie, he pulled off quite a great event there and has set a standard for other promoters so he already has a leg up in my opinion (as far as new gen promoters)... but developing a career from scratch... thats another story.

Eddie is certainly more visible than the Warrens and has arguably stepped further from his father's shadow.

At the moment, IMO Frank still seems to be the 'face' and driving force behind their operation.

Eddie has arguably had much more success than GW&FW.

Eddie seems to of had more of a foundation to work from though. Eddie works behind the matchroom banner whereby the other two seemed to of set up their own promotional company from which they were picking up lesser named fighters and so on. Also Eddie and in turn have the backing of sky tv, it's not quite the same when you're on a niche tv channel.

Arguably its EH's efforts that have won over Sky and have convinced them to nail their colours to his mast, so now he has that platform. Its not so long ago the Matchroom were bit-part players and it was FW who was in a strong position re Sky (and ITV for that matter). EH (albeit with a support of the Matchroom empire) has taken on the boxing arm and reinvigorated it.

You sure? I'd imagine his dads reputation played a big part and they have had an exclusive deal with sky for a few years now. Also i'm sure FW was offered another sky deal but turned it down to set up the channel they now have.

I will give the Warren's more time. I am starting to be impressed with Francis, he comes across very well in his interviews.

Yeah. I'm not even sure how much promoting that George even does. I'm pretty sure that he is involved in getting the rights to the international fights for the channel.

Eddie getting Audley on Prizefigher then a European title, then a world title shot despite the outcome impressed people like Barker and Brook to join up and getting Froch was a massive boost for him. He`s a good promoter and allot of the success of the Boxing side of the business is down to him but he was also helped with Matchroom having other sports to rely on as well.It is harder for the Warren brothers but we shall see what they can do.

Going by the interviews I have seen, Eddie Hearn seems like a nice fella. When speaking, talks like a normal bloke. Frank has always seemed to me, a very mean spirited person, always going on about suing fighters ect. Eddie and Barry seem very easy going and chilled out compared to FW; although his 2 sons seem like nice blokes. We all have our good and bad sides I suppose.

Another question would be, which promoter - Barry or Fwank - would be more likely to sue his own kids over a boxing dispute ?

If Meaty Mick and Kellie produced an offspring, we'd have the next generation covered too

I would have said exactly the same if Lefty hadn't beat me to it. Barry Hearn must have a huge influence with the powers at Sky given the fact he provides them with darts, pool, snooker, bowling, fishomania etc. if you take away football, rugby & cricket Matchroom Sport must provide Sky with a huge percentage of their output so I doubt if it was Eddie's efforts that convinced Sky to give them exclusivity, more his old man's.

There's no doubt that Eddie has inherited his dad's confidence speaking in front of a camera and he is pretty entertaining but Francis Warren doesn't come across too badly when interviewed by people like IFL TV. I'm sure Frank said recently that George was responsible for negotiating all the overseas fights so he seems to be doing a pretty good job.
