George Groves title route

Post by lefty »

Sorry to add to the Groves's threads already in action but anyone else a little perplexed that he's not being matched up with Abraham vs being lined up to fight Dirrell? It's not that I dont think he can win the latter but the Abraham fight seems an easier fight to me. I'm wondering whether it's because Sauerland dont want to give up their cash cow as Abraham still seems to draw quite big crowds and what have you over there. That or maybe they want Groves to beat Dirrell and then they'd have some kind of big England vs Germany (even though Arthur is Armenian) unification fight.

I reckon they're banking on him beating Dirrell and THEN having that showdown with either Abraham or a third Froch fight, that would the the most lucrative outcome for them.

Dirrell is a tough, tough fight for just about anyone. I'd make him the favorite over Groves.

Haven't seen much of this Dirrell. Is he durable enough to take Groves's right hand?

He obviously has speed and skill.

I'm not saying Groves can't punch but he's by no means a murderous puncher. He's had a few highlight reel ko's at lower levels but when he's stepped up in class, he's not had the same affect on opponents. He buzzed Froch good and proper that one time but he got up from it and still got the W.

Why would this even be on the cards? The outcome of the last fight was conclusive. If they were to have a third fight, if would only take another heavy right from Carl and George's legs will fold!!!

Couldn't have put it better myself.

When he steps up he actually doesn't do much damage ... DeGale, Johnson, Rebrasse, Froch II - none of them ever looked remotely in any danger.

A lot of his rep comes off the Paul Smith knockout and catching Froch cold and square on in the first fight first round.

He looked like he had powder puff punches vs Rebrasse in all honesty. It wasn't as though the Frenchman was a defensive wizard, he was simply walking through everything Groves threw.

Not sure what has changed for him to seemingly lose so much snap??

Sorry Lefty but this Abraham is only Armenian p1sses me off. Not having a dig at you personally but his family moved there when he was a schoolboy. He is German AND Armenian. Forty of his forty four fights have been in Germany. His family live in Germany. He has NEVER fought in Armenia as a pro. He is German.

p.s. And Armenian :KO:

Agree with this. Was strange to watch to be honest. Looked like he really lacked power.

Not 1 of them guys has shown to have a bad chin, in fact in Johnson & Froch you've arguably got 2 of the best chins in the last 20 years of the sport. Ok so Degale & Rebrasse aren't as tested but i do doubt that other guys would have difficulty in putting or keeping them down.

Groves didn't look as powerful against the Frenchman, but he seemed to be putting more emphasis into proving he has an engine and throwing in high volume. Maybe Paddy is trying to add another string to his bow right now, adding flexibility to his game. It will take another fight or 2 to see whats truly happening.

He may have caught Carl cold, but nobody else has come close to managing that, Taylor had him down but not remotely hurt like GG did. and he also buzzed Carl several more times over the course of that fight and at least once with a left hook in fight 2.

Kalle Sauerland's the man pulling the strings.....he's got Abraham and he's got Groves, and there's a world title to play with.

He can sell the fight in the UK or Germany - either way he's making good money - and if Abraham wins he's got a heroic veteran but if George wins then he has got the future. Sauerland probably hoping for a draw....let's make a pile on in-house cash twiceover.

The Germans will keep Abraham as champion and send groves on the road for win , if he wins he as a unification if he doesn't he gets a Brit beat up who he doesn't care about

One thing I do find a little diva-ish was that Halling said in commentary for the fight, that George has it written in his contract that Michael Buffer has to be the MC for his fights.

And the band being on the pay roll. All seemed a bit forced, he hasn't achieved that much just yet.

its a good point, if he wins, they have two world champions at that weight class, a match up between them would be a great fight but lets not get ahead of ourselves, Groves can win but I stand by that he is being rushed into this title fight and a loss now would do more damage to his career and raise more questions about if he can compete at a title level.
