IF RICKY HATTON HAD BEEN TRAINED BY THE INGLES...?

Post by seanilius »

How would his career have differed? Ingle defence combined with pure Mancunian aggression. Thoughts?

As good as he was, I think he could have been better, though I'm not sure Ingle would have been the man for the job. If he had got to Freddie Roach before he had all those meaningless defences of WBS title. His footwork and head movement should have been worked on. He often laboured to make openings in his tougher fights and ended up falling in and grappling, wasting energy. He was fast and hit hard. I think he could have had more one punch KOs if he had set his punches up better, better footwork better angles.

I thought his footwork and angles were superb and Billy was an established, excellent trainer.

Agreed. His angles were his main attribute. Move to the side, body punch. Move to the side, uppercut

I dunno, always thought he got WAY to much credit for that victory. Tackie wasn't the beast that sky portrayed him, and quite easily outboxed at top level.

His fans bang on and on about his 'underrated' boxing ability on the strength of Ben tackie.

I think Hatton wasted his best years with that meaningless strap, he had excellent footwork when he was young, he was very quick and his angles were what made him so effective. After Tszyu, he seemed to become far more one dimensional and square on. I think by then the years of getting pissed as a fart and having 13 week training camps, a month or more of which was just to lose the weight he piled on between fights took it's toll and he lost the quickness and cuteness. He also started headhunting more, partly I think because at top level, his body attack was too predictable, but also because he wasn't able to generate the angles that made the body attack so effective any more.

Yeah I feel like he peaked vs Ray Oliveira. I remember thinking he was razor-sharp that night.

Tackie wasn't a brilliant fighter and like you say he was outboxed at the top level, but Hatton was one of the few to outbox him and if he couldn't box his way through a fight, he would have been dragged into a war by Tackie and ended up having a far harder night than he needed to.

harsh. the thing about the tackie win was that is was a big departure from hatton's usual marauding style. he was more patient, more intelligent and got the job done in style...a bit like when gatti beat patterson for the world title. it was a side of both fighters that we didnt get to see too much of unfortunately but both of them were very good technical boxers who just preferred to be in the heat of battle instead.

Ricky was a good aggressive boxer, he had a good jab, head movement and could slip and counter. He wanted to box like a young Duran so worked on pressure and angles, he placed his body punches very well.

The Ingles do a fantastic job and the gym style doesn't suit everyone though if Hatton had spent 12 months there he would have certainly had a few more skills in his arsenal.

His training was shown up as being shite for the top level though. Ricky's footwork and angles were good vs domestic and WBS level fight but not as he stepped up. It's no secret he regressed after Tszyu but it prob started well before that. Him and Billy were drinking buddies don't think it did his career any good however he obviously had a great run and some good wins despite all of that.

Who would you pay to watch Hatton or Junior Witter?

C'mon, guys Hatton could box and fight and he filled stadiums. He had a style that suited him perfectly and it worked for him.

They actually weren't "drinking buddies" at that point. I was there post-Kostya,a lot. They socialised separately. Tszyu was top, top level and it was close combat angles that beat him.

I had a top boxing brain back then, but Billy elevated my understanding of pressure fighters and to say Ricky didn't progress as he stepped up is pure nonsense. He had the style to trouble Kostya, but angles beat KT.

Ricky's main mistake was replacing Billy with the pure opposite in Mayweather Senior. That was a huge mistake and did for him. As I said on here at the time, and was Pariah'd for it.

You could copy this to the, quite frankly ludicrous, Ricky/Ingle thread. Ricky and Billy were a dream match. My only concession would be that, in the end, Billy needed a pad man, but you're in a pit of snakes so who do you trust?

Billy Graham possess the best boxing brain I've come across, and I've spoken to a fair few astute people.

Billy used to do his physical sessions, then the fighters would do scenario based movements. They'd talk through different in-ring possibilities. Graham's former fighters still talk about that side of training. It's a lost art. Steward did it with Lewis.

I've spent hours conversating with experts, if I was about to die, I'd request 10 mins boxing talk with Graham.

That's not just me, either, all of my biggest interviews have stemmed from the fact I've worked with Graham.

He's a fooking nutter, but he's our nutter.
I'm sure you are right since you were there. I still stand by my post though as he just lost his way after tszyu with all that grabbing, whatever the reasons for it.
