BBBofC License need help

Post by cupcake »

Hello everyone

I'm a young British male, I train at an amateur boxing club and in about 5 years time I want to go pro. However I have a mild scoliosis, does anyone if this will stop me from joining? Basically my hips are slightly uneven which makes my spine a bit uneven, I dont get back pain and a doctor who xrayed me said that it's mild and doesn't need treatment such as a brace or anything. Will this affect me getting my professional license? what sort of things do they look out for? and what happens during the physical?

Thanks everyone

Doubt it Robin Deakin passed his medical and he grew up with quite a disability

I would've thought that if the doctors have passed your medical for the ams and it's causing you no pain or risk of fighting. You would pass. Though you'd only need to contact the board for their criteria on gaining a license to box. Good luck

Did robin deakin actually have disabilities or is that a joke because of all the fights he's lost haha, if its not a joke what sort of disablities did he have?

And I just turned 18 so I probably want to give it 4 year before I turn pro, depends on how well I'm doing to be honest.

Ive contacted the board and they weren't too helpful, I asked the woman down the phones if she knows if my condition would disqualify me medically, she then said no so I said oh okay thanks, then asked her what sort of things they look out for during the physical, like what sort of things are disqualifying and she said she couldn't tell me so but my condition would not stop me from applying for a license, so i was a bit confused because first she said that my condition wouldn't disqualify me from fighting professionally then she said it wouldnt disqaulify just from applying for my license.

Robin was born with a sort of talipies or club foot. Think robins affected his hips aswell. My son was also born with the same condition and his feet was more or less pointing backwards after birth resulting in plaster casts and countless ops to try to correct.resulting in my sons muscles not developing properly Pain & also difficulty taking part in every day activities. And also knobs like your good self taking the piss. What robin achieved in taking part in 50 odd fights after his start is unreal.

I wasn't taking the piss? I didn't even know who he was so I googled his name and wondered whether he was making a joke or not? Sorry if I offended anyone, I'm not disrespecting robin either, he's taken part in plenty of pro fights, I haven't taken part in 1 so Im not taking the piss out of anybody

Sorry if I offended anyone. Well hopefully I should be fine in the medical, especially considering the disablities robin has and he is fighting pro. if anyone can give me anymore input for example what happens during the medical what they look out for or anything it would be greatly appreciated! :)

No probs.i was only telling you what his disability is. My boy is only a year or so away from senior school and he already gets the odd comment about the way he walks and runs. I don't hold grudges.sorry was enough for me.going back to your question. I reckon you'll be ok to apply for your license. Good luck

Can anyone answer this too? How comes boxers from the UK have gotten licenses abroad, like ian weaver got a license from spain, don't you have to be spanish to get a spanish license or dont you have to be from the country you get your license from? Also if ian failed the medical in the uk how comes he passes the medical in spain? just curious :box:

We hope so mate. It's an ongoing thing.basically whenever he has a growth spurt his feet turn in. It's just continually cutting & stretching tendons & muscles.didnt want to single you out but heard a lot of people slag robin for this.hes a friend of mine but can come across to some a bit much. However getting to the point if being a good am and working hard to get there with talipies. I really take my hat off to the man

Its predominantly CT scan based with BBBofC, they are more concerned with any issues surrounding the head, hearing, eyes and brain function. So long as you pass blood tests, have decent motor function and its not debilitating it should probably be ok. They would probably require you pass a practical spar session with them and get positive referrals from your GP and Consultants.

I had scoliosis when I was younger. I even had to wear a brace at night for a year or so.
It didn't stop me from having a normal life as a teenager and I still practice boxing now. I do not believe this should stop you from becoming pro or taking part in competitions. The main concern of the authorities are your brain and skull (but I might be wrong).

Thanks man, its just i never really see many boxers with scoliosis, i do see some boxers with 1 shoulder higher than the other and stuff though and wonder whether they have it.

I never had to wear a brace, mine wasnt that bad and I was 17 when we found out i had it and the doctor thinks i'm done growing. I hope it don't stop me! i would just be absolutely gutted to put in all that hardwork and dedication for years training just to go pro then fail a medical it would be pretty shit :x
