Catterall v Stalker
Catterall v Stalker
Very interesting fight, Catterall seems to have made the better transition to the pro's - I think it will be very interesting after 6 rounds and think the fighter with the better stamina will get the win - what's your views?
Re: Catterall v Stalker
Stalker bottled it against Jenkins. Jenkins had a 5 week camp then stalker decided he didn't fancy it and took this fight instead
Re: Catterall v Stalker
Not sure about that as plenty believe Catterall is a dangerous match for Stalker
Re: Catterall v Stalker
Catterall is pretty tight, good defence and has sparred Khan, Brook and the likes of Jamie Cox etc and held his own by the sounds of it. He's very seasoned for a 21-year old.
Tom is gutsy, fighting in front of his home crowd and will be looking to impress. But he often can leave his gloves quite low and he seems not to get tremendous leverage into his shots.
I think this could be a tough fight for Tom and victory is by no means assured. Catterall's last fight, i forget the lads name - but he caught him clean in the 2nd round and he lights out. So he is more explosive too.
Very good fight indeed in my opinion.

Re: Catterall v Stalker
Catterall's from my (original) neck of the woods; nice to see a Chorley boy doing well. I wonder if he trained with Reece Bretherton at Chorley Amateur Boxing club; if anyone knows his amateur background I'd be interested to know. Hope he pulls off the upset against the more heralded Stalker.
Stalker hasn't impressed me at all during the times I've seen him box; he hasn't made the transition from amateur to pro very well. It could be said he stayed amateur too long; at age 30 will he really be able to change much now?
I suspect Catterall is also signed with the same promoter and this match will help him determine who he will invest in going forward.

Re: Catterall v Stalker
Im pretty sure that Catterall started off with Reece when he was 10 as they wouldnt allow him to train until then.
Im from Chorley and embarassed to say Ive only ever seen one of his fight.
I hope he has signed with a promoter will do him good.
From what Ive read it seems to echo the above comments that this is no walk in the park for Stalker.
Im sure I remember him being on someones list of top prospects 2013/2014. May have been on a TV channel or actually it may have been Johhny Greaves on here?
On a side note. Reece Bretherton when I turned up at the gym to see if I could train. I wass 11 or 12. He asked me to extend my arm which I did. In a second he banged me straight on the chops saying " You aint got much reach ave ya"

Haha yeah sounds like Reece! I remember when I first started there at 16/17 and my arms weren't used to hitting the bag. As a result after a few rounds my hands would start to drop. On one occasion Reece saw and cracked me with a swift right hand to the side of my jaw with his bare knuckle and said "Keep yer fvckin' hands up!"littlekinny wrote:Im pretty sure that Catterall started off with Reece when he was 10 as they wouldnt allow him to train until then.

He's a brilliant trainer; definitely the best I've trained under. Here's a nice write up on him I came across a while back:

TBH I gotta feeling that the Warren team think JC is a better bet, as Stalker just doesn't seem to have made the transition to pro, unlike JC. Suprised we have some ex Chorley ABC on here :-)black panther wrote:Catterall's from my (original) neck of the woods; nice to see a Chorley boy doing well. Re: Catterall v Stalker
Honestly never seen catterall but would be surprised if he's better than jenkins who looked pretty good especially in winning prizefighter. To me it looks at if stalker has seen an easier option and gone for it. Could be wrong though.
Re: Catterall v Stalker
I don't know whether it's an easier option, but it's probably the better one career wise. I'm not particularly sold on Jenkins anyway, take prizefighter away and he's not really beaten anyone yet, Catterall at least has the win over Brough on his record.rio wrote:Honestly never seen catterall but would be surprised if he's better than jenkins who looked pretty good especially in winning prizefighter. Re: Catterall v Stalker
I'm a big fan of Jenkins, a little dynamo - but not sure if he's big enough at 140 compared to some.

He's one of the trainers that actually cares about all his kids/fighters.
He'd push all newbies hard when they start in order to build up the fitness and muscle endurance required but also to weed out the quitters.
Once he saw commitment from you he'll still be very strict but would invest time in you, rigorously ensuring you mastered the basics. I later realised the reason he trains
you so hard outside the ring is to prevent you getting hurt inside of it. It's a good while before he lets you spar and by the time he thinks you're ready for a bout, you'll be very prepared. Also he rarely praised his fighters to their face to ensure they didn't become overconfident or arrogant but quietly I'd hear him sing their praises to others.
I'm gutted that I was forced to quit by my parents after about a year training there - they were funding me too so I had no choice. I took up boxing again once I got to University in Leicester and trained in boxing gyms there and once I moved to London for work I've been to a few here. Let me tell you, there are many "trainers" who don't have a clue and couldn't give a sh*t about their kids. Teaching them to bob n weave before they can even throw a jab properly, not even watching their punch technique on the bags, letting them spar far too early...the list goes on. Proper trainer is Reece. I don't go back up north often these days but if I'm there for a while I'd love to pay them a visit over at Chorley ABC and join them for a session.
@Danal2 - good to hear he's still churning out the champions!
You still training there? If I do make it up I'll give you a shout.

Re: Catterall v Stalker
Nice article BP - Thanks for the heads up.
And Danal - I wouldnt really call myself ex Chorley ABC, I only lasted about 6 months.
The whole aparring thing was definately correct. I went down thinking I would get in the ring in my first week:) Eventually when I did spar he put me in against a younger kid from my school. He boxed my head off and I felt a little insulted and despite being told to keep it technical I started swinging wildly and bloodied his nose. Next thing he stopped it and put me in with another seasoned lad but but my own age. He gave me a walloping in the corner everytime I moved my hands he just popped me to the extent I took a knee to stop it (big feeb:). He never told me directly but I knew straight away that he had taught me an important lesson. Definately no favourites and always wanted what wsas best for the lads.

Catterall started off at Chorley and had quite a lot of bouts, losing a few more than he won, before joining Leigh ABC. At Leigh, he had around 20 bouts winning 17, losing in the Junior National final to Charlie Driscoll, controversially, before winning the National CYP title against Driscoll, and boxed for England in GB'S where he lost to future Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Charlie Flynn. He lost in the Senior National Championships at the quarter final stage to Bradley Saunders younger brother Jeff, before going pro.

Jack will beat Stalker if Stalker don't pull out that is ;)
Re: Catterall v Stalker
I'm not convinced with Stalker yet and even beating Catterall won't change that, but it will be a good win.

It's a good club but to call it the home of boxing in Lancashire is pushing it a bit, there's loads of top clubs around, especially in Manchester and Liverpool.Detour wrote:JACK WON MOST OF HIS FIGHTS AT CHORLEY ABC , WON A FEW AT LEIGH ABC , BUT WAS ONLY THERE FOR A SEASON OR TWO , HE GOES BACK TO CHORLEY ABC TO SEE THE LADS , ITS THE HOME OF BOXING IN LANCASHIRE IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEND THERE KIDS THERE , REECE BREATHERTON HAS TRAINED THE LIKES OF MICHAEL JENNINGS AND CARL CROOK .Talkischeap wrote:Means very little now real good kid.
