Fast Eddie is taking the Mick..

Post by Manchester Hitman »

It's been a while since I attacked fast car as his supporters usually jump to his defence
And leave me a battered and savaged mess on here..
So at the risk of being hammered it's time to get to work on him...

1) His ridiculous determination to put on PPV events is going to damage the sport or at least his
Business - Bellew v Cleverley is a British level dustup which should be on SKy sports 1 - neither are cross over personalities and neither are going to be world champions..Eddie can 'stack the undercard' with names v TBA patsies all he likes but it's simply not ppv and I am fully expecting him and sky to get stung.

2) Quigg is going nowhere fast and Eddie lacks the ability to get an otherwise
Obvious fight with Frampton signed

3) We where told Crolla was getting a title shot now it appears
He's being lined up to fight a shot Burns

4) he's now saying he wants to put Joshua
In with Haye next year...yeah good one Eddie.

5) Hopeless mismatches on his cards have become a worrying feature

I could go on but don't wish to bore people..

I agree with a lot but you'll get slated on here with such sense like that the Hearniacs won't have it!

Eddies all about the casual 1 or 2 fight a year fan (thats going to or watching on tv) not boxing fans like us. The sooner people realise this the better.

Agree with all of that

It's a business though unfortunately - why risk the big pay days for your fighters and have them beaten before they they get to it

That's why they call it matchmaking I suppose - there is a knack to getting it right

To most of us or a large percentage on here, Matchroom are matchmaking poorly - to the casual they probably wouldn't notice

This is the point.

Joe Gallagher has a column in the Manchester Evening News - all he talk about is how Quigg is a world beater and how Crolla is the most deserving boxer of a World title shot there has ever bean.

Eddies dad has a column in the sun - he talks the same way, how Quigg is being avoided by the other champions and also going on about Bellew/Cleverley and comparing them to Benn/Eubank etc.

Add to this the Hearn social media machine (that includes IFL) and after a while the drip, drip, drip effect starts to take hold and all of a sudden people start believing what they are being told.

To be fair to Eddie, that's exactly why Sky gave him exclusivity. Neither Hearn nor Sky will ever care too much about hardcore boxing fans as there's so few of us - Eddie's remit is clearly to focus on attracting the interest of casual fans, who he can then sell PPVs to as they only have a limited knowledge of what they're buying & can't see they're being fed crap fights.

I'm not one to defend because if you look back historically at all the threads this was all forecast but not many believed.
However as already pointed out boxing is no longer a sport it's a business.
So what was Sky's role in the PPV decision ?
Were the fighters demands such that it had to be PPV ?
Who knows.

When did boxing make the transition from sport to business?

I too am disappointed that Bellew- Cleverly is PPV but Boxerbeetle is way off the mark calling it a crap fight.

Good fight....never ppv especially if froch v bute wasent. Imo fury vs chisora is a better quality fight, both fighters have a better chance of winning a world title

I wasn't specifically calling Cleverly vs Bellew a crap fight - I enjoyed the 1st one & I'd happily watch the rematch if I wasn't being charged 18 quid on top of all the other sports subscriptions I pay for. I was talking more generally about the direction Hearn's business model is going, sorry if that wasn't clear.

The Queensbury Rules were to help gambling, so I'd say around the time of their formation.

To be honest if you want to watch the sport of boxing go along to a local amateur show where the lads getting in the ring are doing it for the love of the sport!! I was told before we had any professional fighters that as soon as they turn over its all about the business and less about the sport!! That was about 16 years ago mate

I genuinely cannot remember the last time a fight was put on in the UK because it was the best against the second best and the money was irrelevant.

The Bellew v Cleverly PPV suggests that Eddie's judgement is not infallible; there's guys from this forum and plenty of other boxing hangouts who are absolutely livid about this call. And if the loyal fan is not buying it, who the hell is?

He might be burning through a pile of goodwill with Clev v Bellew ....although I suspect that Sky are probably the prime movers and maybe guilty of thinking that any kind of reasonably spicy domestic dust-up is now a golden opportunity to photocopy the Froch v Groves formula. They could be in for a sharp dose of reality.

Froch-Bute probably made a loss, but was a gamble that paid off as Eddie looked like the saviour of boxing and got Froch back in the limelight after the Ward loss. Very clever business with hindsight.

I can't see SKY being the prime mover in putting this on PPV, maybe they have been seduced by Eddie telling them this is going to be a nice little earner for them both but this card is no better than anything that has been shown on normal SKY Sports and if they get caught cold by it they only have had to read the various forums to know it was going to happen.

Is the issue with Eddie Hearn or is it with Sky not willing to invest in the game unless there's a sniff of a PPV at the end ? I doubt Adam Smith is actually setting the agenda at Sky, but as supposed Head of Boxing at Sky, he's absolutely hacking the sport to pieces.

Find it interesting that he has signed up a few big ticket sellers that probably won't reach british level. Think its pretty clear that the idea is to make money on each show, regardless of quality.

I don't think he wants to pay too much for the b side of his shows as it eats into the profit which is fair enough but it means the quality of the shows is waning. Hope the next few shows don't continue being 3 or 4 area level ticket sellers and a couple of name fighters versus tba. Last weeks show was diabolical.

Consider this.
You are a Promotor.
Your expenditure for a bill exceeds income because it's only going to get shown on Sky Sports 1.
However even with minimal sales - and whatever people think it will easily do 80k - you are propelled into profitability if you agree to provide a PPV show what would you do ?
