New WBF Heavyweight tournament

Post by Gnome »

16 fighters will fight over four consecutive months in Jamaica starting on 28th November. Fighters already signed are:

Alonzo Butler, 29-3-1
Raphael Zumbano Love, 35-8-1
Jason Estrada, 20-5
Mike Marrone, 21-4
Shawn Cox, 17- 5
Greg Brady, 5-1
Frans Botha, 48-11-3
Mike Sheppard, 21-17-1

No, it is not a world-class field and no one has terribly missed having a WBF champion - but I will be watching it. There should be some great scraps! Thoughts?

Still eight fighters to be named - who else might get the call-up?

Wasn't the WBF the pseudo-organization originally founded by Pat O'Grady back in the 70s?
Invented it so he could gift son Sean with a "champeenship."

Believe relative Monte Masters snagged the heavyweight title but somehow it never led to a much-anticipated unification bout with Holmes.
Is Masters still available to reclaim his old title?

As Tiny_Acres correctly said - that was the WAA.
Sadly, Monte Masters died in 1996.

Thanx for correcting my assumption that the WBF is the old WAA.

Also sad to learn (or be reminded) that Masters passed away nearly 20 years ago.
He could still whip the flock of tourney "contenders" in line for the WBF belt.

Masters was at the head of the line to fight a comebacking Joe Frazier in 1981 before Smokin' Joe decided on Jumbo Cummings instead.

.......Danny Williams is sitting home and not amused; probably viewed as too much of a threat by the WBF hierachy.

At least they're fighting each other rather than opponents who will obviously overwhelm them. Generally I'd rather see these types of bouts than super prospect X quickly knocking out an opponent who was clearly going to be badly outclassed, or major title holder Y destroying an undeserving challenger.

The WBF may be a joke, and these fighters may be a joke, but a tournament between 16 of these roughly evenly-matched fighters is halfway adequate. I approve. I don't see how it's going to generate an acceptable level of revenue in Jamaica, though, but that's not for me to worry about. Also, it would be interesting if the winner of this tournament made a title defense against a halfway legit opponent, even if it was just a top 50 fighter like Andrey Fedosov or Edmund Gerber. But that would risk the WBF actually making progress toward gaining a legitimate foothold.

I would love the White Buffalo to turn back the clock and win this. At the very least, I hope he gets through the first couple of rounds - he has lost six in a row now (against good competition, at least - they had a combined record of 135-2!) and would love for him to retire on a high note.

They should to bring in Darnell 'ding-a-ling man' Wilson to add a little spice to this one.

Since it's in Jamaica, the ghost of Trevor Berbick could have a decent shot at this belt. :OhYes:
