STEROID USAGE IN THE 1990'S

Post by evrenb »

I was watching a 1994 Roy Jones bout a couple of weeks back and noticed that he had severe Acne on his back. Roy, of course, failed a drug test once so it made me think whether he was a cheat. When Klompton mentioned the other day that Roy was 'roided up to his eyeballs' in the Ruiz match I wondered how bad the steroid problem was in the 1990's and has it got better or worse. What are your thoughts guys and gals? A report I read on line from an accuser said that Roy on roids would have been massively beneficial to him and likened it to carrying a machine gun into a knife fight.

I believe (may be wrong) that Alan Sugar policeman and pro ref made that comment.

I think PEDs are rife in all sports. And few people really care.

Is it true that in NFL you just get a 4 week ban?

As long as the money keeps on flowing nobody cares. Fans of a team or a sports star will seemingly forgive any kind of behaviour.

A lot of people care now. In MLB, (though there is no rule) players who are not getting elected into the Hall of Fame if they were known cheaters. Penalites (and enforcement are starting to get stronger.)
There are still baseball and NFL players that do it, but it has gone down quite a bit over the last several years.

It's cheating, plain and simple. Athletes that use it get an unfair advantage over those that don't. Yes some cheaters will get away with it, but those that get caught should get penalized.

We can only speculate. But doping has been shown to be prevalent in stringently tested sports, such as athletics and tennis. So it's hard to look at a sport like boxing with lax testing and not assume doping is fairly common.

It seems to be accepted now...a few fighters have been caught and they are still fighting...it doesn't seem to be taken seriously. Cheating basically.

I just read a piece about some US sprinter who is running as fats now as he was when he was caught cheating...the article suggested that in the US it wasn't considered such a big deal.

I don't follow sprinting, don't know anybody that does. (There is probably even less interest in it than boxing here.) I'm sure that cheating goes on it. However, in the sports that a fair amount of people care about, (in the U.S. at least) there has been a lot of negativity towards cheaters over the last several years. Fans don't like it; so the powers that be have woken up.

This I believe is Justin Gatlin? The recent scientific evidence is that the benefits from taking roids lasts for years, even after the athlete has stopped taking them. This is the story I read. Gatlin is now running times he was running when on roids and at an age when most sprinters are in decline. His agent says he is just getting better with age (he would say that I guess) and it is sour grapes.

I am not sure if it is or isnt seen as a big deal in the states but several athletes and doctors have been investigated by the FBI which indicates someone is interested.
